Cate Cox felt a resounding slap across her face, jolting her senses.
“You’ve really let me down! Your sister has been through hell for over 20 years, and here you are trying to steal her man. That’s shameless!” Her mother’s words stung as Cate held her throbbing cheek in disbelief. “Mom, Nathan is my boyfriend. How can you all be so unreasonable?”
Returning home from a business trip, Cate was shocked to find her long-lost sister, Rosabella Cox, sitting intimately with her childhood sweetheart, Nathan Lowe, on the couch. Rosabella had recently returned, and it seemed like she and Nathan were getting cozy. On the other side of the couch, Rosabella and Nathan’s parents were engaged in pleasant conversation.
Unable to contain her emotions, Cate approached Rosabella to confront her, only to receive a slap from her mother. “Mom, please stop hitting Cate,” Rosabella pleaded, taking the blame. Nathan quickly intervened, holding Rosabella’s shoulders. “No, Rosabella. It’s my fault. I’ve always treated Cate like a sister, which probably led to her misunderstanding my feelings.”
Cate’s mind exploded with pain and confusion. If Nathan only saw her as a sister, why did he promise her a future together? Why did he hold her tightly in his arms? “Shut up!” Cate couldn’t bear those words; they disgusted her.
“You should watch your mouth. Is that how you speak to your sister?” Mrs. Cox scolded her angrily. “Can’t you show some tolerance for Rosabella after everything she’s been through for 20 years?”
Shocked and speechless, Cate realized there had to be a limit to tolerance. Why should she give up her love? She wasn’t a saint either. Mr. Cox stood up, adding to the criticism. “Are you done? Nathan isn’t interested in you either. We need to discuss Rosabella’s engagement party now. Get lost. You’re just an eyesore here.”
Trembling, Cate glanced at Nathan, who seemed indifferent, and then at Rosabella, who clung to him. Suddenly, she felt like a laughingstock. These were the people she cared about the most, yet they all sided with Rosabella in that moment. Tears streamed down her face.
Wiping away her tears, Cate grabbed her suitcase and left without looking back. She sped away in her Maserati, not knowing where to go. She called her best friend, Mireya Lynch, for support. “Come have a drink with me.”
Her voice was hoarse from sobbing. Mireya immediately agreed, “Sure, I’ll be there in a sec.” When Mireya arrived at the pub, Cate had already finished a bottle of red wine on her own. “You came at the right time. Let’s drink together. I’ve ordered a lot. You can’t leave until we finish them.”
Cate handed Mireya a beer bottle. Concerned, Mireya asked, “What’s wrong? Is Nathan ignoring you?” The mention of Nathan’s name felt like a knife scraping Cate’s heart. “He dumped me and is getting engaged to Rosabella.”
Mireya was shocked. “What kind of cheesy plot is this?” Cate quickly recounted the events of the evening. Mireya couldn’t believe it. Cate and Nathan had been childhood sweethearts, and everyone expected them to get married eventually. Their parents even approved of their relationship. Now, Nathan being with Rosabella made Cate a laughingstock.
“This is insane! Your parents should value both you and Rosabella equally. Are they out of their minds?” Mireya exclaimed. Cate clutched her wine bottle tightly. “They think Rosabella has suffered too much, and now that she’s back, they want to give her the best.” Mireya couldn’t believe it. “But you’re their daughter too!”
Cate forced a smile. “Hah! Now that Rosabella has returned, all they care about is her. They always wanted me to marry Nathan, but now that I take it seriously, they call me immature. And Nathan, he promised to be with me forever, but he changed his mind just like that. I hate him…”
As Cate choked on her words, she took several gulps of wine, tasting her tears mixed with the alcohol. She started feeling dizzy. Concerned, Mireya tried to divert her attention from the bottle. Suddenly, she noticed someone familiar in the pub. “Hey, look over there!”
Mireya pushed Cate and pointed to a man sitting in a corner. Despite the dim lighting, he exuded an irresistible charm. He wore a suit that seemed out of place for the setting. With his eyes closed, he leaned against the couch, emanating an aura of brilliance. Whenever the spotlight hit him, he looked like a perfect character from a comic book.
After a glimpse, Cate averted her eyes from him. “No matter how attractive he is, I’m in no mood to enjoy anything that’s pleasant to the eye right now.”
“I’m trying to tell you that the man is Nathan’s uncle.” Cate was momentarily stunned. “Are you sure?”
Nathan previously mentioned that he had a mysterious uncle. However, his uncle managed a company in a foreign country, so she had never seen him.
A few days ago, she heard that his uncle had returned.
“Yeah, I’m very sure. My brother told me when we attended a cocktail party the other day. I heard he’s not very old and he’s clever with tricks. Even Zachary is at his mercy.”
Zachary Lowe was Nathan’s father.
Cate’s eyes glowed. She had an idea crossing her mind at that instant.
“Well… What do you think will happen if I marry his uncle?”
“Pff…” Shocked, Mireya spat out the wine from her mouth. “Say that again.”
Cate gazed intently at the tall, handsome figure. “Since I can’t become the Lowe family’s daughter-in-law, I shall be Nathan’s aunt to fill the shameless couple with disgust!”
Mireya was momentarily dumbfounded. She then showed Cate a thumbs up right away.
“He’s tall, very tall indeed. I’m on your side! His uncle’s appearance is perfect. Even Nathan isn’t as good-looking as his uncle. His uncle’s wealth and power are also comparable to that of the Lowe family.”
“I need to remind you that you have to find an excellent match or your position in Cox Corporation will be inferior to Rosabella’s.
So I think his uncle is suitable for you!”
Cate was dazed for a second. Mireya might be straightforward, but what she said was true.
If Rosabella had the Lowe family backing her, Cate’s position in Cox Corporation would be at stake.
“Okay, I’m going to capture his heart right now!”
Cate snatched Mireya’s purse on impulse to search for lipstick and foundation.
Her pure face soon looked radiant.
Mireya blinked. “Uh, are you sure you can deal with him?”
“He’s just a man, isn’t he? Hah!”
Cate swept her hair over one shoulder, then held a half-full glass of red wine. With a tipsy and pretty look, she walked toward the man proudly.
The closer she got to the man, the clearer his exquisitely handsome face became. His clean, somber eyebrows and exquisite nose bridge were nothing short of attractive.
“Hi. Sorry to bother you, but could you tell me the time now?”
Cate tapped her finger on his shoulder twice.
When the man opened his drunken eyes under the dim light, the word ‘devil’ flashed through Cate’s mind.
Her brain shorted out for a few seconds. After regaining her senses, she wore a pretty smile and said, “I think our first encounter here is the start of our happiness.”
With furrowed brows, Shaun Lyons coldly said, “I’m not a doctor. I don’t provide treatment.”
“What?”
This is beautiful. So refreshing
