Yeti rolled his l*ips between his teeth. “Alpha River, what I am trying to say is that we assure that we won’t let any harm be done to Hawk. He is a precious child and we are going to always protect him. He needs to be amongst us so that he understands our ways. While Arthur is going to stay in the Dark Moon pack and learn about their ways, what about Hawk? Doesn’t he have to read about our history? Doesn’t he have to know about our ancestors?”
“He can know about them once he is mature enough. I have already announced that he will take over as the Alpha of this pack, then that means that I will be rearing my child in a way that he takes over perfectly. And I am his mother. You cannot snatch my pup from me!” She got up and thumped the table with her fist. “I won’t allow you to!”
Her snarl was so ferocious that all of them winced. Yeti sat down in his place, but he was clearly dissatisfied. River was in her protective mode. She was never going to be separated from her pups. She glanced at Hunter who had a don’t-mess-with-me expression on his face. “Is there anything else you want to talk about?” she asked them. She was done with this conversation.
In a low voice George said, “You are letting your motherhood come in between the judgment of the Elders and that is not right. We have the right to have Hawk amongst us. What good would it be for us if he is not studying in one of our schools?”
Fury bubbled i*nside her. “Where were the Elders when my father was k*illed? Where were the Elders when I was being sold? Where were the Elders when—”
Suddenly, the door of the conference room banged open. A warrior’s face came into view. He was panicky as hell. “I asked no one to disturb us. Which word do you not understand?” River growled at the warrior. It was then that her gaze went to his shirt. There was blood splattered on it. She paled. “The- the nannies-” he rasped.
Hunter got up slowly in his place.
“Hawk’s nanny was k*illed and—”
“And what?” Hunter’s voice was terrifying through his fangs.
“Hawk is taken- away!” the warrior completed his sentence, flinching.
River rose from her chair, her h*ands clenched into t*ight fists as blood drained from her face. Hunter growled and the next instant, his h*ands were on the t*hroat of the warrior who was trembling with fear. “What did you say?” he asked in a voice so guttural that everyone out there started shaking with fear.
The warrior grabbed his wrist and h*ard as he tried, he couldn’t budge Hunter’s h*and from his n*eck. “Alpha Hunter,” he managed to babble.
River walked to Hunter, each step heavy. “Leave him,” she said. Hunter was shaking with anger and didn’t leave the warrior, but when River placed her h*and on his forearm, he left the warrior. The warrior slumped to the ground and coughed and wheezed as he tried to catch his air. “Tell us what happened?” she asked.
The warrior looked at both of them and scrambled away a little. “Alpha River,” he said. “Both the nannies were in the garden with the pups, strolling. We were all stationed around and keeping a keen watch.” He coughed and spat out blood. Then he looked at Hunter with fear. He averted his gaze back to River. “All of a sudden, we heard the nannies screaming and when we reached the spot, Hawk’s nanny was on the ground, dead. Her t*hroat was s*lit and Hawk was missing. I called all the warriors to rush after whosoever was the culprit, but we couldn’t catch him. It’s like he or she has disappeared in thin air!”
Hunter was so furious that he let out a roar so loud that the windows and the doors of the house shook. Then he lunged outside, shifting into his Lycan. The Lycan sniffed the air, looked back at people inside with a murderous glint and loped towards the forest.
Shocked as hell, River slumped on the ground. Lena rushed to her and helped her get up. “Where is Arthur?” she asked in a trembling voice.
“He is in his nursery,” the warrior replied, looking at her with terror.
With her knees wobbly, River hurried to the nursery. Arthur was with his nanny and was crying. River took him in her lap immediately and started rocking him. “It will be fine…” she murmured. “Hawk will come back…”
The nanny was also crying with blood splattered all over her dress. “Lady River? she cried. “I have no idea how this happened. Or who was he!” She sank to the floor and cried even louder. “We were all laughing and telling jokes as Arthur was playing with Hawk when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, there was a lot of fog around us. The next moment I heard Aisha screaming and then all went dead. When the fog settled, I saw Aisha on the ground, her t*hroat s*lit and Hawk was missing.”
River listened to her but she couldn’t understand what the nanny was saying. It was as if she had gone into a shock and refused to come out. She stroked Arthur’s hair. “It will be fine… Hawk will come back…”
She didn’t know when others came in the room and took the nanny away. She didn’t realize when the sun went down. All she knew was that Hunter was looking for Hawk and that he would bring him back. She clutched onto Arthur like she would die if she left him. She didn’t know when Hunter came in and hugged her or sat down with her. She didn’t know when the dinner was served or what was happening. All she knew was that Arthur was with her. And that Hawk would come back.
Hunter had gone to find the culprit who had taken his son. He had combed the entire woods around the house, but Hawk wasn’t found. He had visited the crime scene and saw that the nanny was lying dead with her n*eck turned at an unnatural angle. He leaned closer to her and sniffed her in order to catch a different smell but there was nothing he could make out. The warriors gave the same details as Arthur’s nanny, Ora had given. There was a lot of fog around the kids and the nannies and then when the fog cleared, Hawk was missing.
Hunter went to be with River and his heart twisted, seeing that she was too stunned to even talk. The council members were extremely agitated and everyone else in the pack was furious at the disappearance. They wanted to k*ill Ora, the only witness to Hawk’s disappearance, but Ora was taken to a high security prison and no one knew where she was.
Lena was feeling so ashamed of herself. And she wasn’t alone. Every council member was ashamed of themselves. In the morning they had insisted that Hawk stay with them. However, after the turn of events, it was clear that Hawk wasn’t safe here. All they now wanted was to find Hawk and return him to his mother.
“What have you got on the culprit?” Hunter asked, stabbing his f*ingers in his hair. It was 2 AM in the morning and he hadn’t winked an eye. On the inside he was miserable, desperate and utterly helpless even as he maintained a tough fagade on the outside. He had called Elijah, Asher and other warriors from his pack. The truth was that every member of both the Dark Moon pack and the Crescent pack were with him. They all wanted to find the Alpha’s heir. Elijah and Lena were looking at the map. “This is the place from where Hawk was kidnapped,” Elijah said, pointing at the map. “From here…” he made a circle with his f*inger. “We have searched in this area but we haven’t found a clue.”
Hunter s*ucked in a sharp breath. He narrowed his eyes at the lake that was adjacent to the pack house. “Did you look over there?” he growled, gesturing at the woods beyond the lake.
“No!” Lena breathed. “F*uck!” She stood there frozen. “We didn’t even think of looking there!” The lake was five miles from the place where the garden was.
“Gather warriors,” Hunter snarled. “I will lead the team!” Just before they were leaving, Hunter received a call from Falcon. “Alpha Hunter?”
“Falcon, I am busy. Whatever this is, it has to wait!” Hunter said, irritation lacing his voice.
“I am coming to find your son along with my warriors,” Falcon said crisply and disconnected the phone. It was as if he wasn’t even asking Hunter whether he could come or not.
Hunter let out a rough exhale. He dialed Falcon’s number again. “Okay, meet us in the Crescent pack territory beyond the lake!”
“Yes Alpha!”
