In the end, Colin still noticed her sorrow. He asked, “Madison, is there something you’re upset about?”
“I need to undergo surgery, but when I look back in my life, I realize that I have no one to sign the risk acknowledgment letter for me. Am I a failure?”
Madison spoke nonchalantly, but a pained look flashed across Colin’s eyes.
“Madison, everyone has a different definition of failure. To me, you’re an outstanding woman, so you’re not a failure. An unhappy marriage can only be a mistake at most.
“But we have long lives. No one can predict the future and avoid making mistakes.”
Madison frowned a little. “You know about what happened to me?”
“Back on the cruise, I knew that Mr. Williams was holding you. I was among the crowd at the hospital that day, so I overheard your fight. Sorry, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop.”
Madison smiled helplessly. No wonder he took so long to get food.
“It’s okay. It’s the truth, after all.”
Colin placed a dessert in front of her. “Madison, if you don’t mind, I can sign the letter for you. What surgery are you getting?”
Madison said lightly, “Stomach removal surgery.”
The calmness in Colin’s expression was disturbed. “Madison, are you…”
“It’s exactly what you think it is.”
”
“How can it be? You’re so young. How could you get a terminal illness like that?”
Seeing his panicked expression, Madison reached out and patted his head. “It’s okay, Colin. I’ve prepared myself.
“Also, it’s not as bad as you think it is. I went through chemo once, and it was very effective.”
The young man’s face was like a sheet of paper. His emotions were written clearly on his face.
His pale face was filled with worry. The corners of his eyes reddened as he choked. “You’re the nicest person in the world, Madison. You’ll be okay.”
In reality, she was a little pessimistic. But her words had turned into words of comfort instead.
“Yes, I think so too.”
“Madison…”
“It’s okay, it’ll be fine,” Madison mumbled. No one knew if she was convincing Colin or comforting herself.
For the next few days, she prepared herself according to the doctor’s instructions. She cut off almost all contact with the outside world.
She even paused her investigation into Jackson’s matter. She didn’t want these unrelated things to affect her mood.
The only person she was worried about was Jack. His phone had been turned off ever since he left. There was no news of him even now, and no one knew if he was dead or alive.
The weather had been nice lately. Seagulls soared above the sea, and the cherry trees in the residential area had bloomed.
Madison would go downstairs for a walk sometimes. It seemed to be raining petals, and the scenery was breathtaking to watch.
She would subconsciously think of Hunter and Andrea’s engagement ceremony. It would definitely be extremely luxurious and
beautiful.
Since that day, Hunter never came to visit. They finally returned to their respective lives.
Even though she consciously avoided any news of them, she could still hear rumors about them from passersby.
Hunter was the perfect man in their eyes.
When the women discussed in excitement how nice he was to Andrea, Madison walked past them calmly.
It was as if she didn’t know the subjects of their conversation.
Opening her palm, Madison caught a petal in her hand. She thought that the cherry trees on the island must be in bloom as well.
Sensing someone watching her from behind, Madison turned around warily. She met a pair of dark eyes that contained a lingering hint of emotion.
Hunter stared quietly at Madison. She hadn’t done anything out of the ordinary in the past few days.
The most she did was spend long hours at the hospital a few days ago. Jeff was getting weaker by the day. It was only reasonable for Madison to want to spend as much time with him as possible.
For the past few days, she didn’t go anywhere outside of the residential area. Everly didn’t come over either.
She was wearing a beige lace dress. The breeze caressed her face as flower petals danced around her. She was exceedingly beautiful.
Hunter realized how gentle Madison could be when she kept her distance from him.
Madison looked him in the eye from a distance away. She nodded in place of a greeting. Then, she left without even turning back.
Hunter felt upset. He had made a decision and given her a promise, but he kept breaking his own rules for Madison’s sake.
Seeing that she was about to leave, he stepped forward and grabbed her wrist.
Madison looked at him calmly, then sounded a warning. “Mr. Williams.”
Hunter was wearing his usual suit and leather shoes, but his tie was a little lopsided. A strand of his usually neat hair hung on his forehead.
This wasn’t like him.
He was getting engaged tomorrow. Logically speaking, he should be on cloud nine at the moment. “So why does he look so sad?” Madison wondered.
Hunter gulped. “I just feel uneasy.”
He knew he shouldn’t come looking for Madison, but the uneasiness had been gnawing at him for days.
“Oh.” Madison blinked, then looked calmly at him.
The sky darkened, and the streetlights above them quietly turned on.
His tall figure was bathed in the light from the streetlights. The calmness was gone from his face.
“Are you hiding something from me?”
Hunter didn’t know why he had that feeling. The last time he felt this uneasiness was two years ago, the day before Madison fell into the ocean.
He felt that something was about to happen.
Madison looked up into his eyes. Her voice was quiet as she said, “No. Can you let go of me, Mr. Williams?”
Her face seemed to be covered in fog. He couldn’t figure out her true thoughts.
“After all, I don’t want your fiancée to misunderstand.”
“If…”
Hunter hesitantly spoke up. “If you need anything, you can tell me.”
“I need a man. Will you give me that?” Madison smiled, watching Hunter’s expression turn cold.
“See? If you can’t do it, don’t make promises so casually. Mr. Williams, you probably don’t understand this. But the higher your hopes are, the bigger your disappointment will be.”
Reaching out, she pried his fingers off her wrist. “You once said that I’m the only woman in your life, but in the end, you didn’t keep your word.”
“1…”
When Hunter’s last finger was pried away, Madison turned her back to him. “Hunter, don’t talk to me anymore. My life has nothing to do with you anymore.”
With that, Madison ran into the distance.
The petals seemed to be raining down, drowning her figure bit by bit.
Hunter wanted to run after her, but he suddenly realized that he had lost even the right to go after her.
He thought, “What can I say even if I catch up to her? Can I change anything in the end?”
He put a hand to his chest, where his heart was throbbing. “Why do I still feel so uneasy?” he wondered.
Madison ran into the elevator and then pressed the button to her floor. She gasped heavily for air.
“Things have already come to this point. Why did he come here despite that?” she thought.
When the elevator doors opened with a ding, she slowly walked out. She saw someone standing at the entrance of her home.
Madison only glanced at the person before turning around and going back into the elevator.
“Madie, don’t go.”
It’s very nice, it even brought tears in my eyes, can’t wait for the next 5 chapters. What is the wacko’s secret? Can’t he see Andrea is nothing compared to Madie. Andrea should be in prison for almost killing her when she was pregnant.
Can’t it finally move forward? Each time I read in hope and in the end I am only disappointed. There are so many unnecessary passages.
This is probably the best book I’ve read on Novel Palace. (I also like ‘My wife is an ex-convict.) It does not contain unnecessary floral language or repetitions. The only one where the hero is complicated enough that you like and dislike him at the same time. And I really like that the heroine has a strong backbone. If it were possible to buy the whole book, I’d buy it right now.
Please do update the chapters often enough. Thank you.

Why does it take so long to update?????
