As the hours passed slowly, Hector started getting restless. He climbed down the tree, shifted, ran around for a few minutes and then came back. He climbed back again into the treehouse, and looked at the activity inside the manor. The servants were still bustling around a lot. He had to give it to the Crescent pack council members. Even though their Alpha was undergoing so much stress, the manor was bustling with activity.
Rooky gave him wafers to eat that he had brought with him. He unwrapped roasted chicken that Canna had given to him. “Masteif he said, chewing meat. “I think I should go and check them. I am worried about Mink.” Hector let out a rough exhale. He was also worried about Mink, but seeing all the activity in the manor, he was sure that Mink was just fine. There could be a possible delay in her plans. Anyway, if she failed to get Arthur, his alternate plan was in place.
Two hours went by and Hector rolled his shoulders and cracked his n*eck before making a call. This time Hunter picked it up in one go. “Do you have my papers ready?”
“Yes, I have,” Hunter replied in a voice that was so calm it was deadly.
“Then deliver them to me at the address I send you in a few minutes,” Hector said with excitement in his tone.
“No,” Hunter hissed. “I want to be assured of my pup’s safety.”
Hector was getting impatient to see those papers. The pack finally belonged back to him. He sent an old picture of Hawk to him. But Hunter was smart. Five minutes later he growled on the phone. “If you think that by sending me an old photo you are going to go scot-free, trust me I will come after you and you will regret doing this stupidity with me.”
Hector gritted his teeth. He disconnected the call. Then he called Canna and said, “Come with the pup now!” Canna sounded relieved. “Oh thank the goddess you called! You asked me to run away with the pup if you didn’t call me in two hours!”
“Where the f*uck are you?” Hector barked on the phone.
Canna winced. “I am about a mile away from the cave, but I will return. I will be with you in less than an hour!” Hector wanted to smash her right there and then. The f*ucking woman had run away so fast. “Come fast b*itch!”
“Master,” Rooky said with a shaky voice. “This has got unnecessarily delayed. Hunter would go ballistic.” That was the last statement that he needed. He slapped Rooky h*ard. Rooky shrieked as he fell on the floor. Hector growled, “I don’t pay you to tell me about Hunter!”
Rooky got up, rubbing his cheek, glancing at Hector with fear. “I am sorry Master?’ he said in a thin voice.
Hector gained control over his anger and dialed Hunter’s number back. “I will send his photo in an hour!” And without listening to Hunter’s approval or disapproval, he disconnected the call. This was a delay or glitch in his plan that he hadn’t anticipated.
He switched on to looking at the camera feed on his laptop. Half an hour passed just like that. He was getting so restless about the whole glitch that he couldn’t focus on the screen. He climbed down from the treehouse and paced around the small area. He stretched himself, did some exercises and then climbed back in. Very casually he looked at the laptop screen as he munched on the wafers when suddenly, his eyes caught something weird on the screen.
He stared at the screen and waited for the servants to leave and see something new, but— “F*uck!” He stabbed his f*ingers in his hair. The camera was on a loop. The same servants showed again and again. The camera was tampered with and someone had fed it with a video that repeated every fifteen minutes. When fifteen minutes later he saw the same faces, his eyes went wide as shock and fear rippled through his body.
“What happened, Master?” Rooky asked, not understanding why Hector had gone so pale. Hector pointed at the laptop screen. “Do you see what is happening out there?”
“Yes, servants are busy with their daily routine,” Rooky replied with indifference.
“You idiot!” Hector shouted at Rooky as he berated himself on the inside. “That camera is on repeat mode. We are seeing the same video again and again!”
Rooky was too dense to understand that. “But how is this possible?” he asked with a dumb look on his face.
Hector closed his eyes. He was compromised. That meant that Mink was caught because only she knew where the camera was. And that was the reason why she wasn’t responding or had come with Arthur, was clear. But how did she manage to get caught? He glared at Rooky. “When you went to Mink’s house, what did you see?”
Rooky withered under his gaze. “I told you what I saw. Mink wasn’t in her house. Her parents were sleeping. There was liquid on the floor and it looked like she had filled in more balloons with the liquid. Other than that there was nothing else out of the place for me to be suspicious.”
Panic surged through him. He started shaking, seeing all his plans going down the drain. No, this couldn’t be. He still had Hawk with him. He could still negotiate. And now he was scolding himself for asking Canna to turn back and be here as soon as possible. His watch showed that fifty minutes had passed. He hissed in anger realizing that he wasted time. He should have looked at the video in a better way, with more concentration. This was the beginning of a disaster, but he had to salvage it.
He dialed Canna’s number. “Where the f*uck are you?”
Her voice was very low when she said, “I am here Master. You can come down and take a picture.”
Hector rushed downstairs and saw that Canna was with Hawk who was strapped behind her in a baby carrier bag. A surge of relief washed him. He still had a chance. “Stand there!” he said, pointing at the tree on which the treehouse was built.
Hawk gurgled when she moved to stand next to the tree. “Dada,” he clapped his h*ands with glee. Hector hated that word. He cl*icked the picture of Canna with Hawk and was about to send it to Hunter when he jumped at a sound that emanated from nearby bushes. “Who’s there?” he barked. Nervous, he ordered at Canna. “Go up!”
Canna started to go up when a very lethal voice behind them froze her. “Don’t you dare to move, Canna,” Hunter growled. “Else I will blow your head and throw it to the lions!”
Hector spun on his heels only to meet a pair of sharp green eyes. He blanched.
“Dada!” Hawk clapped when he saw his father.
To say that Hector was shocked was an understatement. He had sent Hunter on a wild goose chase to Portland, then how come he was back here and that too with all his warriors? He gulped as he spun around to see that he was surrounded by all of them. Elijah, Asher, Lena, and others. Even the demon Alpha, Falcon was there. How did they know of his location? He had every plan so beautifully designed, yet it all fell apart. Slowly, he moved towards Canna as he tried to shove the shock that had sent him in a panic mode. No wonder the pup was saying Dada. And when the hell did they come? Why couldn’t he smell them?
No wonder Mink wasn’t responding. No wonder that man in Portland gave Hunter’s mobile number because contacting on the land line meant that Hunter would have been there. And like a fool, Hector was so greedy and in a hurry that he contacted Hunter only on cell phone.
But he had an alternate plan. “You can’t do a thing to me!” he said, glaring at Hunter. And the next moment Canna opened the zipper of her jacket, exposing a large number of dynamites. “If you move an inch, she is going to press that trigger.”
Canna’s h*and went on the trigger that was in her h*and. In a hoarse voice she said, “If you come to me, I will press this trigger with my thumb.”
Hunter’s knees wobbled. He lifted the papers in his h*and. “I thought we had a deal,” he said to Hector. He lifted the document high above his head while his gaze never left Canna. The girl was young and had a crazy look in her eyes. It bordered on mania. She could do anything at this moment.
Hector raised his eyebrow. He couldn’t believe that Hunter got so scared. He let out a laugh as relief washed through him. So he still had an upper h*and. With a victory apparent on his face, he ordered, “Throw that folder on the ground.”
Hunter threw it on the ground as all others watched him with trepidation.
