River was staring in blank space. Things had stilled for her. Her brain had stopped thinking of a world without Hawk. On the inside she was dying to listen to his voice even if she could hear it once.
All she responded was to Arthur’s voice or his feeding instincts. It was as if she had to bring up Arthur, but her soul was cut into half and the other half had gone with Hawk.
“Mama.”
She heard a familiar babble but she couldn’t believe that it was what she thought it was. Her eyes roamed to Arthur who was looking at something with a glint in his eyes. He clapped his h*ands and River’s heart squeezed. But once again her mind sent her right back into the void that had become comforting. It absorbed all her shock and didn’t let her feel the pain of the loss of her child. “Mama.”
Who was calling her mama? Her pups called everyone Dada. Tears filled in her eyes because she was surely hallucinating. Her pups never called her mama. Once again, her eyes drifted to Arthur who was now giggling. He wobbled his way out of the bed and she caught him when he reached the edge. He turned to look at her and giggled.
“Mama”
There was someone hugging her l*eg. River’s eyes went to her l*eg and she saw another baby standing on the rug. Her gaze traveled up to the face of the baby and she froze. With her arms t*ightly around Arthur, she looked at the pup who was exactly like Hawk. Hawk’s blue eyes locked onto hers and he raised his h*ands for her to pick him up. “Mama.”
Shocked like she had seen a ghost she brought her f*ingers to his face just to feel if what she was seeing was real. Was she hallucinating? She t*ouched his eyes, his nose, his l*ips without realizing that tears were streaming down her eyes like they had broken a dam. “Hawk?” she said in a hoarse whisper. Hawk rubbed his eyes sleepily and then raised his h*ands again for her to take her in his lap.
“Hawk!” she shrieked and immediately picked up her pup. “Hawk!” she squealed, excited and overwhelmed and still shocked. He called her mama. For the first time he called her mana.
Her mind was breaking the barrier that she had formed between herself and the world and that barrier was too thick. She wrapped him t*ightly in her arms as she k*issed his cheeks, his nose, his forehead, his n*eck and inhaled his scent. “Hawk. Hawk. Hawk!” she continued to call him by his name as she showered her k*isses on him. “My pup!” she started crying, her shoulders shuddering with each cry. “Where were you? Did you forget me?” For the last few days, she was so t*ightly wound up that now it was all loosening.
Someone enveloped her and her pups in his strong and long arms t*ightly and she knew who it was. She cried, “Hunterrr!”
Hunter rested his chin over her head as he too started crying. This was the first time in long that River had called his name and he was complete with his family. His Lycan was also emotionally charged and he purred inside him. “I love you…” he murmured.
River took both her pups in her arms and climbed onto his lap to feel secure and safe. This was the worst incident that had happened in her life. And she wanted to feel safe in his arms. She missed this security so badly that she refused to let go of him and her pups.
Hunter didn’t know for how long they sat like this but he held his family in his arms for as long as they wanted to be there and for as long as River needed to cry. It was good that she was crying because that was how her shock was melting away.
Faria brought them food by evening and Hunter fed her with his h*ands. It was in his instincts to feed his mate and after a long time when she had come back from her shock, he was going to make her eat with his h*ands. As he gave her a piece of juicy steak, she talked to Hawk and Arthur animatedly. She was so happy that it warmed his heart. She would ask Hawk to say mama again and again and the pup would do that just to please his mother. He was not leaving her lap at all even as Arthur came to him and climbed in his lap.
Hunter could understand what kind of jolt the little pup must have undergone. He was surprised that the child who always spoke dada, spoke mama after he was kidnapped. That clearly showed how much he missed his mother. It was almost 9 PM when she fed Hawk lovingly and then Arthur and made them sleep on the bed beside her. “I don’t think I would need a nanny for a long time now,” she said, seeing them both sleeping comfortably. She tucked them in a blanket and k*issed them on their foreheads before finally getting up from there.
Hunter’s l*ips curled up when she came to sit in his lap. She curled her arms around his n*eck and buried her face in his n*eck. “I missed you, Hunter…”
He inhaled the scent of her hair and closed his eyes as he leaned his cheeks against her head. “I missed you more than you could imagine, love.” It had been a grueling three days. After a while, she pulled back and said, “Thank you. I don’t know how you did it, but I am ever so grateful. I had lost all hope of seeing him again. Who kidnapped him?”
Hunter shook his head as memories of what happened with Hawk rushed back. “It was Hector.”
Eyes wide and shoulders drawn back in tension, River looked at him with astonishment. “Goddess! Where is that bastard?” She would k*ill him with her bare h*ands.
“Dead,” Hunter replied. “I k*illed him for good!”
River gasped. Then she launched herself again at him and hugged him t*ightly. “I am sure what you did was right!
Because if you wouldn’t have k*illed him, I would have!”
Hunter laughed. “I don’t doubt that at all.”
“I am not ready to hear what happened in rescuing Hawk, but when I am, I will let you know.”
Hunter cupped her cheeks. “It’s in the past and we don’t have to talk about it. I don’t want to talk about it at all.” River nodded. She understood that even Hunter was emotionally exhausted after this. “I know,” she said and pressed a k*iss on his l*ips.
Hunter sighed. It was so good to have his River back with him. He missed her greatly. “Are you sure about the nannies?” he asked.
“Hundred percent sure!” she growled. “Faria is there to look after my pups. I think I don’t need anyone else.”
“And what about your pack’s demand to keep Hawk with them?” he asked because that question was still hanging like a sharp sword in front of them.
“I have no intentions of giving him until he has come of age,” she retorted. “They can go and f*uck themselves!” Hunter burst out laughing. “I have the same opinion. They can go and f*uck themselves!”
“I want to go back to the Dark Moon pack with my pups tomorrow itself!” she declared. “I don’t want to stay here for another minute until things are more secure than ever!”
“Don’t worry. I am already on it. Are you sure you want to leave tomorrow?” he asked, a little wary of that decision.
“Why?” Her brows furrowed.
“Baby, the Elders need to be addressed by you. I know that you will be irritated by them, but this is of utmost importance. We don’t want mutiny in our packs just on this little point. And after what happened, I am sure Elders are on the backfoot,” he explained.
River narrowed her eyes and didn’t speak for a long time. Hunter stayed quiet wondering what was going in that mind of hers. After much contemplation she said, “I have a plan for tomorrow. Ask Lena to arrange an urgent meeting with the Elders tomorrow morning at 10 AM. Once the meeting is over, we are going back!”
