She had merely performed surgery on Faye. Danika felt that they weren’t close enough to be discussing private matters. Furthermore, she wasn’t fond of Faye either, not to mention Eustace sitting across from her. Not only was she not fond of him, but she despised him.
“Sorry, Dr. Zellweger, I shouldn’t have asked,” Her eyes turned red instantly. Biting her lip, she felt wronged. “I thought we were friends.”
Danika sneered. “Friends?” she thought.
“Dr. Zellweger, aren’t you being a little mean? Faye was just casually asking. She didn’t mean any harm,” Eustace spoke up. He stared right at Danika as if trying to see through her. Danika had no words. She was about to refute when she heard Gilbert ask, “Mr. Eustace, I heard that you got a divorce?”
Eustace frowned immediately. Annoyance was written all over his face. “Since when have you become such a busybody?” “Don’t be angry, Mr. Eustace. I was just casually asking. I didn’t mean any harm,” he answered Eustace with the exact words he had used. The atmosphere became tense instantly. Danika tried to hold back her laughter. She was in an excellent mood now.
Danika put her cutlery down and wiped her mouth. “Brother dear, let’s go. We should let Mr. Eustace and Miss
Lawrence enjoy their meal.”
“Okay.” Gilbert nodded.
They had already got up to leave as they spoke. Eustace didn’t say a thing. He just looked at the both of them with a cold stare.
“Brother dear? So they’re not boyfriend and girlfriend?” he wondered.
“Dr. Zellweger…” Faye wanted to stop her.
Unfortunately, Danika just waved at her. Then, she left the restaurant together with Gilbert. After the two of them had left, the atmosphere at the table didn’t improve either. Faye glanced at the man sitting across from her. Seeing that he was quiet, she wondered what he was thinking about. She couldn’t help but worry. “Eustace,” she called, “what’s on your mind?”
Eustace came back to his senses, but he was looking outside the window. Over there, Danika was preparing to get in the car with a smile. He suddenly remembered the voice he had heard at the Old Mansion the other day. He had always felt that it sounded familiar, but he couldn’t recall when he heard Danika’s voice until just now.
It sounded similar! But how could it be? He couldn’t figure it out. There must be something that he had overlooked.
In Gilbert’s car, Danika received a call from Zack. “The Quincey Group is now teaming up with the Lawrence family.”
“The Lawrence family?” She was stunned.
“Yup. The Lawrence family seem to be very close to Eustace. Almost everyone in Parrington knows the family has Eustace’s support, so they have been doing quite well these two years.” After saying that, he asked in a puzzled tone, “Why did you ask me to investigate this? Did that bastard Eustace upset you again?”
“No reason. I was just curious why he suddenly stopped working with the Zelliot family,” Danika said.
“That’s good. If he bothers you again, remember to tell me. I will beat him up.” He hadn’t let go of the fact that Danika had wasted two years of her life with that man.
Danika smiled and burst into laughter upon hearing this.
“Alright.”
After hanging up the phone, Danika looked out of the car window. She sometimes felt that she was fortunate. Although she didn’t have any parents, her grandfather brought her up and took great care of her since she was young. She also had two brothers who doted on her. She was very content with her life now.
“The Lawrence family is the family of that woman beside Eustace just now, right?” Gilbert suddenly asked as he glanced at Danika, sitting in the passenger seat.
Danika nodded. “Should be.”
Other than Faye’s family, Danika couldn’t think of any other families with the last name Lawrence.
“Then, it appears that Eustace had already planned to stop working with the Zelliot family. Your incident was a were coincidence. It didn’t affect that much.” Even if Faye hadn’t talked behind Eustace’s back, the plan was already there all along.
Danika nodded sullenly. “Yeah. I really thought that if I apologized to him, the Quincey Group would continue working with them.”
Now that she thought about it, she was being ridiculous. Noticing that she was unhappy, Gilbert decided not to mention Eustace anymore. He changed the topic. “There will be a charity dinner tomorrow night. Are you free?”
“Do you want me to accompany you?” Danika asked.
“Yes, I still need a plus one,” he said.
Danika covered her mouth and chuckled. “Of course I can accompany you, but it’s time you find me a sister -in-law too. How could you expect me to accompany you every single time?” “Okay, I will,” Gilbert answered half-heartedly as his gaze fell upon Danika’s face. At the Quincey Group.
After sending Faye home, he returned to the company to work. However, as he was staring at the document in front of him, his mind couldn’t help but drift toward Danika. Her voice kept echoing in his head. The more he thought about it, the more he felt that it sounded like the voice he heard that day at the Old Mansion.
At this moment, Vincent knocked on his door and entered the room.
“Mr. Eustace.”
“Yeah, what’s up?” he asked as he tried to suppress his thoughts temporarily.
“You asked me to find your ex-wife and gift the house in Charmford to her, but…” He hesitated to continue.
Eustace looked up, seemingly annoyed. “But what? She didn’t like it?”
“No, that’s not it. I can’t locate your ex-wife.” Vincent lowered his head, afraid to look into his boss’ eyes.
“Can’t locate her?” Eustace frowned. He was very displeased. “Vincent, I’m very dissatisfied with your capabilities lately.”
First, he couldn’t find anything about Dr. Zellweger. Now, he couldn’t even locate a country girl. What did he need this assistant for? Vincent nodded again and again. He broke into a cold sweat as he admitted, “I’ve been incompetent. I’m willing to accept your punishment.”
A stern look flashed across Eustace’s eyes. He said, “Continue to investigate. I don’t believe a country girl like her could have gone that far.”
Eustace was already upset when he couldn’t find any information about Dr. Zellweger, but considering she was famous, he could somehow understand the situation. However, that ex-wife…
“Alright, I’ll make sure to find her.” Vincent nodded.
Feeling slightly relieved, he spoke again. “There will be a charity dinner tomorrow night. Are you going?”
The following night.
The charity dinner was held at the Majestic Hotel. It was organized by the top magazine in Parrington, BQ Magazine. When Eustace arrived, the hotel entrance was surrounded by all sorts of paparazzi and reporters as he got off the car.
“BQ Magazine is so privileged to get Eustace Quincey to come!” someone exclaimed. After all, everyone knew that Eustace had not always been a fan of this kind of event.
“I know, right? Too bad we can’t go in and check it out. The charity dinner tonight must be interesting.” another person said pitifully.
“Who’s that woman beside him? Could she be Eustace’s girlfriend?” Some people noticed that Eustace didn’t attend alone. He brought along a plus-one, and many were surprised about this.
Upon hearing the news, everybody else only noticed Faye standing next to Eustace. It wasn’t that they purposely ignored her. It was just that Faye was too ordinary-looking, so she didn’t manage to capture their attention at first. Unfortunately, Faye didn’t know the truth. Standing beside Eustace, she enjoyed receiving all their envious looks. She was utterly satisfied.
“You shouldn’t have come tonight,” Eustace said while walking toward the dining hall. “You haven’t fully recovered. You should be resting more at home.”
“I’m fine, Eustace. It’s too boring resting at home every day. Accompanying you here for this dinner will help me relax.” She flashed a smile at Eustace, but it didn’t feel sincere.
If she hadn’t attended this event, there would surely be tons of women in Farrington who would find a way to seduce Eustace. She had to come and keep an eye on him to eliminate all competition.
The two of them had just arrived at the entrance when Mr. Nelson, the editor-in-chief for BQ Magazine, rushed over after hearing the news. “Mr. Eustace, I didn’t expect you to come. Thank you for gracing us with your presence.”
