“And what if you leave your boyfriend during that time?” William took two steps away from her and stopped, waiting for her reply.
She stuttered, “I-I won’t!”
“Answer the question, Miss Natalie,” the judge said stiffly.
Natalie whipped her head to look at the judge and l*icked her l*ips. Scared of him, in a feeble voice she said, “I- I don’t understand the question, Your Honor.”
William took a deep breath knowing fully well that she was acting smart. “Let me rephrase the question for you.” He scratched his chin. “How were you supporting yourself at the college without Shawn or Garry?” Her heart raced. “Before I met Shawn, I was working tables at a local restaurant.”
“That’s correct!” William rushed to his table from where his junior gave him a document. He h*anded that document to the clerk who gave it to Judge McDonell. “This document shows that Miss Natalie worked in the Faulks Restaurant for a period of one year before meeting Shawn and received $15 per hour. It wasn’t enough for her to maintain herself. After she met Shawn, she stopped working.” As the judge flipped through the pages, William turned to see Natalie who was visibly pale. “Isn’t it true Miss Natalie that you stopped working after you met Shawn?”
“Y- Yes.”
“And did he help you with your college tuition fee for the next year?”
“Yes,” she replied in a low voice.
“What happened when you left him?” William asked another question.
She clenched her teeth. “I went back to working after a month.”
“Yes, you did that,” Shawn smirked. “Because Shawn had given you $2000 when you left him because he was afraid that you had just given childbirth and that you might still not have recovered. However, after that money was over, you went back to earning at the same restaurant.”
Natalie jerked her vision to Shawn who was absolutely quiet and watching her with hatred. The reality was that she had stolen that money from him and gone away. He never came back after her. He must have told this to William and now instead of pressing charges of theft against her, Willian was stating that she took the money from him, portraying him of benevolent nature. She could have refuted it but the problem was that Shawn had evidence that she had stolen. He had sent her a message saying that she shouldn’t have stolen because if she would have asked for more, he would have given. And she had written, “F*uck off!”
When William came up to her, she became stiff. “Did you or did you not?” he snapped.
She jumped. “Yes, I did.”
“At the same wages?”
“Yes.” How could she lie? The lawyer was too cunning. She was sure that he had dug up all the information about her.
“Until you met Garry?”
“Yes.”
William moved back and canted his head. “Do you see a pattern here, Judge McDonell? Miss Natalie goes back to working at such low wages once she is not supported by her boyfriends. And it is not necessary that she is going to stay with her current boyfriend forever. So we come back to the previous question.” He raised his eyebrow. “Once you leave your boyfriend what will you do?”
She clenched her fists because she felt like punching him, but she tampered her anger down as she scanned Shawn and Lena. Returning her attention, she said, “I will go back to work, if I leave him.”
“That is right, Miss Natalie,” William said. “You will go back to working. You are still studying in college. You are unable to support yourself. When you leave Garry-” he waved at the policeman on the side, “-will you be able to support yourself, let alone support your baby?”
There was a raucous laughter from the audience and even the judge couldn’t help laughing at Natalie’s situation. It was clear that she was leeching off the money from her boyfriends to support herself at the college.
“That’s ridiculous!” she shouted. “You are imagining things.”
“I am not,” William replied as he produced another document and supplied it to the judge. “Your Honor, I would like you to take a look at this document.”
Natalie’s brows furrowed. “What is it?” she growled.
“You don’t know?” he said, glancing at Melissa. “A copy of that was given to your lawyer.”
Natalie shot a glare at Melissa who shifted in her chair. Melissa was told not to do anything and only represent her. So Melissa did nothing. She prettily sat on the chair and watched her senior William do all the argument. “In case you don’t know,” William said. “This is a copy of the document that you had submitted to the social worker’s office to allow you to get maintenance for Lia without even having Lia with you.”
Natalie was stunned. She froze on her chair. She had submitted this document only a few days back. This was Garry’s idea that she would get child support money if she got Lia back. She was least interested in Lia until she saw the child support money.
“You didn’t bother to inform the social worker that you didn’t have Lia with you as yet and filed for her custody sure that you will get the child support money. Why?” William shouted.
Natalie jumped as she came out of her stupor. She didn’t know what to reply because it was Garry’s idea. She looked at him for support, but he avoided her gaze and was firmly staring at William with a clenched jaw. She realized that he wasn’t going to help her because he wanted to keep himself clean. She had no evidence that he was involved in it because he had never sent her messages about it or visited the social worker with her. But how was she going to leave him? If she was going down, she would take Garry down. “It was Garry’s idea!” she blurted. And then she slapped her m*outh with her h*ands, realizing the mistake she did. “F*uck!”
The judge snarled. “Don’t you swear in my court, lady!”
“I- I am sorry’ she said with quivering l*ips.
William’s face lit up with a smile. “So you agree that you went to the social worker to get money for child support because you won’t be able to support Lia on your own. At the same time, you are not sure if you will leave your boyfriend or not.” He turned to the judge. “Your Honor, Miss Natalie did something very wrong here. She showed fake documents to the social worker because she was sure that she would win this case. Since she is implementing that Mr. Garry gave her the idea, I request the court to charge Mr. Garry as well.” He let out a breath of sigh and walked back to his chair. “I also request you to not give Lia’s custody to Miss Natalie as she doesn’t have a stable income stream and she is now involved in fabrication of documents, which is ill*egal.”
“This is absurd!” Natalie rasped.
William ignored her words. “Lia’s custody should remain with my client Mr. Shawn Mendez as he has a stable source of income and has been supporting her pretty nicely on his own.” He pointed at the back. “That girl out there is Jane. She is Lia’s nanny. Who has the money to have a nanny these days? But Shawn wanted the best for his daughter and so he is least bothered about all the money spent on her.” He chuckled. “Shawn owns Hotel Sapphire which gives him a steady income every month.” He picked up more documents and showed that to the judge as Natalie’s eyes went wide with surprise. “With that I rest my case.”
“Hotel?” she said. “He has a hotel?” She didn’t know about it. Her gaze went to Lena and jealousy scorched her. Lena must be enjoying all the luxuries he must be providing her.
