Lena let out an exasperated sigh. “I am sure that every pup I will ever have is going to be a replica of Shawn. His ink doesn’t run out!” She glanced at River. “Even Arthur and Hawk are copies of their father.”
River rolled her eyes. “And Hunter is after my life to have another pup. Reason being—he wants a baby girl who would look like me. As if I will fall into that trap?” She f*licked her gaze at Lena and the two started laughing. “Miss Lena,” Jane came into the room. “The kids want to go out to the park. Can I take them?”
“Be careful Jane!” Lena warned. “They want to run everywhere. They should be well-guarded.”
“Ah, it’s not like they would run away!” River rubbished Lena. She knew that after Hawk’s kidnapping incident, Lena had become paranoid. “Our warriors would be there all the time, okay? Don’t worry”
Lena’s shoulders dropped. “Okay Alpha…”
As soon as Jane left, Lena took Shiloh from River and carried her to the nursery where she made her sleep in her crib. She covered her with a blanket and then went to the garden where Shawn and Hunter were having wine. She joined them as they talked about Shawn’s upcoming hotel project.
“What have you thought about Lia?” Hunter asked as he sipped the last of his wine and got up to fill more. Shawn picked up a piece of cake and shook his head. “I don’t want her to go to my world. I am afraid that Natalie would be there, working out some form of twisted revenge.”
“But Shawn-” Hunter came to sit next to River with his wine glass full. “Lia is a human kid. I am afraid that she would be bullied in the shifter school where every child has a wolf. If you like, we can shift her to my castle where she will go to school in the Dark Moon pack and at least she won’t be bullied.”
Shawn froze at that idea. He would never allow his daughter to study with Hawk and Arthur. “No, I want my child to be with me.” He chuckled nervously.
Hunter pursed his l*ips. “Then you should at least consider sending her to a boarding school.”
“Ummm…” Shawn sipped his wine. “I don’t think so. She is too young and she would always hate me for making her stay away from Lena and Shiloh.”
All at once, Jane came running back. Seeing her expressions, Shawn’s hackles raised. “What happened, Jane?” he asked in a quiet voice.
“Lia!” Arthur shouted. “Come here!” He was making a mud castle along with Hawk when all of a sudden, his eyes fell on a yellow and blue bird that had fallen on the ground some ten meters away.
Lia removed a curly lock from her eyes with her muddy h*and and looked at the bird. She gasped. “Is the birdie dead?”
Arthur got up, wiped his dirty h*ands with his shirt and stared at it. It was still fluttering its wings as if trying to fly. “Don’t go near it,” Hawk said as he got up, brushed his short p*ants and stared at it.
Lia came to stand in between them. She grabbed Arthur’s h*and as she fixed her gaze on the bird. She lowered her voice. “We must help the little birdie. Else she will die.” She scanned the guards who were busy talking to Jane. “But no one will allow us to go there,” Hawk whispered back.
“We can go ourselves,” she offered.
Excited by the little adventure, the trio slowly walked towards the bird who was struggling to spread her feathers and making distressed calls. “This is a baby bird,” Lia said.
“No, this is a boy bird,” Arthur countered.
“No!” Hawk disputed. “This is a mommy bird.”
As they carefully padded their way to the bird, checking on the three guards who were still in conversation with Jane, Lia put her f*inger on her l*ips. “Shhh…” Hawk and Arthur nodded even though they weren’t making noises. Their small footfalls on the grass barely created a sound as they inched towards the injured bird. They reached it and sat down around it to examine it, their crouched bodies covered by the tall grass and dandelions.
Hawk t*ouched the bird. It clacked its beak and tried to bite him as it moved away from him to Arthur. Arthur caught it and saw that one of its wings was broken. Lia t*ouched the broken wing and said, “We have to take it to a doctor”
“Lia!” Jane’s panicky voice came from the other side. “Where are you?” They heard the guards running everywhere. Lia snapped, “Hurry, let’s go back!” Sitting behind a tree’s trunk, they were barely visible.
Arthur got up with the bird in his h*and when all of a sudden, a man jumped at Lia from the thick bush behind them and grabbed her. She shrieked.
“Lia!” Hawk shouted as he punched the man with his tiny fists. Arthur dropped the bird from his h*and and joined his brother to punch the man, but the man shoved both of them on the ground and then ran inside the deeper woods.
All the guards along with Jane rushed to this side shouting her name. “Arthur! Hawk!” Jane rasped, blood drained from her face. “Where is Lia?”
They got up and pointed at the woods. “A man-” Hawk said, almost crying. “A man came. He took Lia!” Jane thought she could faint. She instructed two guards to run in the direction pointed by the boys as one guard picked up the boys and rushed away from there.
“Put me down!” Hawk screamed.
“Let me go!” Arthur shouted. “I want to go to Lia!”
