The two screamed and kicked and thrashed against the guard to go after Lia, but both of them were overpowered by the guard who took them back to the house. Jane followed them, panicky as hell.
When she came up where the parents were talking to the guests, she tried to form words, but her t*hroat choked. “What happened, Jane?” Shawn asked, rising from his chair. He noticed the guard putting the boys on their feet. The children shouted and screamed Lia’s name again and again and were trying to get out of the room, but the guard wasn’t allowing them.
Hunter and River got up as Lena remained frozen in her place.
“Mr. Shawn,” Jane said with trembling l*ips and tears streaming down her eyes. “Someone has taken Lia away.” Shawn’s head reeled so fast that he sank on the sofa. Lena caught him in time as Hunter rushed out of the room, muttering curses. River got hold of her boys and took them inside where she asked them as to what happened.
Along with Jane, who was so panicky that she would have fainted too, Hunter darted to the place where they found the boys but from where Lia was missing. A little bird with broken feathers was lying over there. “Arthur was near this little bird,” Jane said, now crying hysterically.
Hunter looked at the bird and picked it up. Scared, it nestled itself in his palm and hid its head. He spread its wings and realized that someone had cut them neatly with scissors. “Keep it with you and go back,” he ordered her. “I am going after the guards.”
“I am coming with you,” Lena’s voice from behind didn’t surprise him.
“Where is Shawn?” he asked.
“Calling all his contacts!”
As Jane left for home, Hunter and Lena sprinted in the woods and shifted. They must have run miles and miles but they couldn’t even pick up the scent of Lia or her captor. It was as if she had disappeared from the face of earth.
They reached back home in the evening. Lena saw that Shawn was a mess. He was pacing the house and almost delirious. “Shawn…” She went to him and hugged him from behind to reassure him.
“Why her?” he cried. “Why not me? Lia is so small that she can’t be anyone’s enemy. They should have taken me!”
Lena hugged him t*ightly from behind and closed her eyes as tears rolled out. This time even she couldn’t stop herself from crying. It was unbearable to see Shawn’s misery. They both stood in the main hall and cried in each other’s arms. “I just wish that they keep her safe. I am ready to pay whatever ransom they want.”
Shawn had taken his car and gone around the whole Crescent pack as well as the neighboring packs in the day, but Lia was nowhere to be found.
River had a h*ard time putting the boys to sleep. They insisted on going and finding Lia all the time. When she came out, she curled her arms around Hunter’s and watched Lena and Shawn as the two cried in each other’s arms.
Finally when Shawn settled, Hunter said, “I have put my team to search for her. I hope we will find her in a day at the most. Let’s wait for the ransom call. I am sure that by kidnapping Lia, they must be hoping to extract a fat amount from you.”
Shawn nodded as he shook his head. “I hope they call. I will give them whatever they want.”
However, a day passed, then two and then a week, but no ransom call came. Shawn was getting desperate by the day. He even called his family in Middleton but they all said that they haven’t seen Lia. A month later, every lead went cold. Whoever kidnapped Lia, didn’t kidnap her because they wanted ransom, but because they wanted to avenge Shawn. And only one person could do that – Natalie.
Teams came after Natalie to investigate. They snooped and kept a track of her but other than going to the college and coming back, there was nothing else in her routine. In the evening she would work in restaurants because apparently her boyfriend Garry had left her.
Lena and Shawn couldn’t find Lia and she was finally reported missing.
River would often call Lena and ask about Shawn’s health.
“He has gone abnormally quiet and I fear for his health, River,” Lena complained as she quietly sobbed. Shiloh was with a new nanny, Martha. They had fired Jane but she wasn’t allowed to leave the pack. They had investigated everything about her, but she wasn’t involved.
“I am so sorry…” River replied. “I don’t know but Arthur and Hawk have also become very quiet. I think they are traumatized.”
“They will get over it in time. They are pups, but what about Shawn?” Lena cried.
“I know…” River said with a ragged breath. “Hunter’s men are still searching her.”
14 years later. (Lia POV)
Dressed in a black satin gown, Natalie was resting in her casket, dead, with her h*ands folded on her c*hest. I should be feeling some remorse, some grief but there was none. I tried h*ard to find emotions that would produce some tears in my eyes, but none came.
My eyes drifted to Garry, her partner who never married her but lived off her little money that she earned. Most of which came from a child support agency. She worked as a waitress in a shady restaurant and would mostly work even during nights. When she would come back in the morning, she would be covered in red marks. Initially, when I was a child, I used to be concerned and ask her about them, but it all stopped when she rebuffed me.
Only five people came to attend her funeral and I didn’t know any of them. Three men and two women. One of them asked if she was pregnant. Funny. Yesterday when she returned from the restaurant, she had vomited. She had locked herself in her room. Garry had come in the evening. He was so drunk that he opened the room and then slept with her. In the morning he declared that she was dead.
