The funeral took place the following day. It was drizzling. A distant thunder rumbled in the sky. Lia watched the casket of her mother going down as she stood next to Garry. He was holding an umbrella for her which was an act that they had to put up in front of the five people who were present at the funeral.
“Thank you so much for coming,” Garry said sadly as he shook h*ands with them and gave a side glance to Debra who was glaring at him. He gave her a t*ight nod and then turned to where Lia was. Placing his h*and on the small of her back, he guided her to the car in the parking lot. They came back to the house in silence. As soon as Lia was in the house, she rushed upstairs and locked herself in the room, scared that Garry would come after her. He had been keeping a close watch on her and she felt creepy under his gaze. But to her relief, he didn’t come. It was almost midnight when she opened the lock of her door and peeped out. Dim light from the living room below illuminated the area. Soft dramatic conversation with music from TV reached her. Sure that he was sleeping in front of the TV after his usual alcohol, she tiptoed her way to the kitchen. On her way, she saw that he was snoring on the couch with a bottle of cheap whiskey loosely held in one h*and that was dangling. Lia took a deep breath and went to the fridge to find something, anything she could eat. She was starved since morning and could eat even if she got one piece of bread. There were cheese cubes and dried bread in the fridge. She grabbed them, closed the fridge and turned and to her shock, she found Garry staring at her from the door.
“You locked up yourself for the whole day,” he said, his eyes red with all the booze he had had. “Why?” The bottle was still in his h*and.
She gulped. She glanced at the little space that was left in the door to go out. “I was upset.”
He took unsteady steps towards her as he drank the last remaining whiskey. He kept the bottle on the table. He gave her a sleazy look as she inched away from the fridge towards the door. “What were you upset about? We both know you didn’t like Natalie.”
She clenched her teeth as dread skittered down her spine. There was little space between her and the door. She contemplated dashing towards sure that Garry won’t be able to catch her because he was too drunk. So she ran to the door. The next moment Garry was chasing her. He was on her before she could reach the stairs. He grabbed her from behind. Lia thrashed and kicked and shouted at him but the man had brute strength. Moreover, she was feeling weak because she hadn’t eaten anything for the whole day.
This was what Lia was scared of. As soon as Natalie left, Garry would come on her. Garry had grabbed her waist. He picked her up and took her back to the living where he threw her on the couch.
“Garry!” she shrieked. “What are you doing?” She got up and was about to run, when he caught her and threw her back on the rug. He had a frenzied look in his eyes. He started removing his belt.
“I had fantasized about you, about this for so long Lia,” he growled, his breath stinking of booze. “Now this is your future. You have nowhere to go and I am the only one who will take you in!”
“Get off me!” Lia shouted as he pressed against her.
“No Lia. Now open those t*highs so that I may see your t*ight c*unt.”
“F*uck you!” she shouted. The man was crazy. She couldn’t let him r*ape her. She looked around for anything to save her.
“Yes. Let’s f*uck,” he chuckled in that animalistic way. He parted her t*highs but Lia resisted. Her gaze went to another whiskey bottle that was discarded beneath the couch. She grabbed it and crashed it on his head. “Ahhhh!” he screamed. “You b*itch!” He took his h*and to his head which was bleeding now. Lia took advantage of that and quickly ran away from there. She rushed to her room, thinking that she had successfully stopped him. But he was an animal. He rushed after her. She closed the room but just to be safe, she dragged her table and stacked it against the door.
Garry started banging the door. “You little b*itch! You think that you have gotten away. Where will you go? You have no one except me. Accept your fate and if I am happy with your p*ussy, maybe we will marry.”
Lia stifled a cry. She knew that after this incident, she would never be safe in this house. But true to what Garry had said, she had nowhere to go. Except one place. She picked up her satchel, stashed some clothes and other essential items in a plastic bag. She wore her jeans, a hoodie and sneakers quickly.
Between constant pounding on the door and in her heart, she finally pulled up the sliding window. A gust of cold wind rushed in along with fat rain drops. She quickly climbed out of it and jumped on the soft ground below. She made a dash to her school.
The school grounds were shrouded in darkness as heavy rain pounded the earth. She knew of a place in the tall wall that encompassed the school where she could breach. It was a common place where most junkies were found. As she sprinted there, she saw that there was no one. Lia crossed the ground and reached the main building. She made her way to the toilet and sank on the floor once she had closed the doors, relieved that she was safe here.
Once she had gained semblance of control, she got up. Tired as hell, both physically and mentally, she gripped the edge of the counter and found herself staring in the eyes of a gaunt girl. There were dark circles beneath her eyes and her cheeks bones were angular. Tears filled her eyes, thinking how her life changed so dramatically in just one day. She let those tears fall because she had been holding them for a long time. She was officially an orphan now. She washed her face after what looked like hours and changed into dry clothes. In the morning just before the school reopened, she combed her hair, brushed her teeth, washed her face, drank plenty of water on her empty stomach and walked out of the bathroom with her satchel and plastic bag. The first thing she did was to stash her bag in her locker with her books.
“Weirdo!” One of the students spat as he walked past her.
She lowered her head while taking her books out and then quietly walked to her classroom. Students and teachers looked at her with sympathy but she kept to herself. When it was lunch, she rushed to the cafeteria but she didn’t have money. So Lia went to the back of the cafeteria where most of the unused food was dumped. She picked up a few leftovers and went to sit behind a tree where she ate them in solitude. She stowed a little bit in her bag for the night.
When it was evening, she hid in a toilet stall and came out only when the guards had locked the main building. She ate her food and wondered if she should meet the child support.
For two days, Lia managed to survive like this. On the third day, Garry came to meet her and was in the lobby. He had a bandage wrapped around his head. “How long are you going to hide, Lia?” he said in a low voice. “I will be outside the school in the evening, so you better come out!” She didn’t speak a word to him, instead she turned and left.
The following morning, after she had eaten the leftovers, she vomited. She heaved and then vomited more. Suddenly, the door of the toilet opened and the janitor, an old man, walked in. “Liah Garrison, what are you doing here at this time!”
Lia snapped her head to look at him. “S*hit!”
Lia was in the vice-principal’s office. “For how long have you been staying here, Liah Garrison?” she asked, as she swiveled her chair.
Lia l*icked her dry l*ips as she clutched her stomach that was still aching. “I came yesterday night,” she lied. The vice-principal adjusted her glasses and asked, “Did you have any trouble with your guardian, Garry?”
“No,” she lied again.
“Then get out of here. If you won’t, I will h*and you over to child support!”
“I will,” she replied in a queasy voice. Now there was only one option left for her. She had to go to meet the child support.
