Robert lifted his gray eyes to look in hers. “Today is her eighteenth birthday and I am scared that she will find another mate. I won’t be able to take it… She hasn’t come to the school. I want to go to her but dread what will happen if she finds a mate.”
“Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!” Lia stopped him. “Wait a sec! What do you mean by mate? You mean she has a boyfriend?” Robert stared at Lia without blinking his eyes. “You don’t know what a mate is?”
“Of course, I know what that word means! But the way it came out of your m*outh, it was like something very special.”
Robert scoffed, mingling it with a chuckle. “Do you know anything about this place? About the Dark Moon pack or the fact that you are a human amongst-” Just as he was about to finish his sentence, a very strong scent of mint hit his nostrils. A growl emanated from his c*hest. Lia jumped back, scared. Robert’s eyes turned a golden yellow. He got up and turned toward the railing.
“Robert!” Lia called him, terrified of his sudden change in body. He appeared more muscular and his n*eck muscles corded in tension. Claws jutted out of his f*ingers and she slapped her m*outh when she saw that he had fangs that were elongating. Hair rippled out of his arms. His shirt seemed to stretch to the point of tearing. The buttons on it snapped out and it ripped open.
She scrambled away from him with a stifled scream. What was happening? Her heart thundered in her ribcage. Was this some kind of mutation?
Robert glanced at her for a moment. She froze. Because the way he glanced at her, it was as if he would rip her apart into pieces.
Suddenly the door of the rooftop opened and Arthur and Hawk entered. “Lia, come here!” Arthur shouted. But she was frozen in her spot, terrified to even speak. Arthur came to her side and grabbed her by her waist as Hawk came to stand in front of her.
Robert growled at them once more and bared his fangs as if he thought them as a challenge. The next moment, he ran toward the railing. Lia’s eyes followed his movement. By the time Robert was jumping over the railing, half of his b*ody had hair everywhere, his snout was long and he resembled a wolf standing on his feet. She removed Arthur’s arms around her waist and rushed after Robert. “Robert!” she called him, scared for what he had become. He needed medical help. Urgently. He had jumped two stories down.
“Don’t go after him!” Arthur shouted as Hawk ran after her.
But Lia was next to the railing because she was sure she would find a dead b*ody of whatever Robert turned into. But to her utter shock, Robert landed on his two feet perfectly and that too right in front of a girl. “Mate,” Robert growled at her. “Mine.”
The girl, with red hair, grinned and jumped at Robert, hugging him h*ard. “Mate!” She curled her l*egs and arms around him and k*issed his hairy face as he carried her to the woods on the periphery of the school.
Lia’s eyes popped out of her sockets, seeing the incident unfolding in front of her. Wasn’t the girl scared? She saw them disappearing in the woods and when she turned back, her head was too dizzy to make any sense out of it. She had heard of wolves and Lycans, but they were stories. They were movies and TV series, but never anything in real life. Her head reeled so fast that she lost consciousness.
“Liaaaa!” She heard Hawk’s voice but it came warbled. When she woke up, the first person who came into her view was her father.
“Daddy!” she shrieked and got up to fold him in her arms. “I saw- I saw-”
Shawn caressed her back gently as she p*anted, trembling in his embrace. “I know what you saw…” he said softly. From the corner of her vision, she found Arthur and Hawk standing in the corner of the room, their faces pale. Lena was sitting on the other side of the bed.
Lia removed herself from Shawn. With eyes wide, she rasped, “Robert, he- he converted into a- a-”
“Lycan?” Lena completed her sentence.
“You know?” Lia asked, still close to her father.
“Yes dear?’ Lena said with a soft smile.
“But how?” Lia was bewildered.
Lena gazed at Shawn and he nodded at her knowingly. “Lia,” Lena started. “I wanted to tell you about us when you had come, but you were under so much trauma already that we had kept this a secret. We were going to let you know in a few days. We had also asked the school to keep it a secret from you, but it seems-” she took a deep breath in. “The cat is out of the cupboard. The residents of the Dark Moon pack are werewolves and Lycans.”
“What?” Lia squeaked, not able to believe what Lena was saying.
Lena sighed. “I am a werewolf and am married to your father who is a human.”
Lia blinked her eyes once, then twice. She looked from Lena to her father and then back to Lena. “You aren’t a human?” she said, disbelief blasted in her c*hest.
“No,” Lena replied.
Lia scrambled back further to her father, feeling scared. Her gaze drifted to Arthur and Hawk who were staring at her with worry written all over their faces.
“Lia,” Shawn said. “There is nothing to be scared of.”
“B— but-”
“Would you want me to shift in my wolf form?” Lena said. “Then you will be convinced, I guess.”
Lia gulped. She didn’t know. Her eyes went back to Arthur and Hawk wondering if they were also beasts. “I don’t know…”
Shawn clasped her h*ands in his. “Lena, you should shift.”
“No!” Lia shouted. “It must be so painful! Please don’t do this for me.”
Lena chuckled. “It isn’t painful for me, sweetheart.” She got up and shifted into her wolf form. Her wolf, Mandy, looked up at Lia and placed her head on her bed as if inviting Lia to explore her.
To say that Lia was shocked was an understatement. She yelped a surprise when Lena shifted and then came to her. She patted her head and brushed her silky hair. Mandy l*icked her h*and and Lia giggled excited as hell. All her fear vanished. Mandy c*ocked her head and then trotted out of the room. When she returned, she was wearing different clothes.
“Gosh!” Lia chirped. “You are beautiful!”
Lena hugged Lia t*ightly. “I am glad that you liked me.”
“Daddy,” Lia said. “I swear to God, you couldn’t find anyone better!”
Shawn laughed and joined his girls in an embrace. Arthur and Hawk watched Lia closely but refused to leave. After a while when Lena tucked her back in the bed, she whispered to her, “These two have been sitting here patiently. I think you should talk to them.”
“No, I don’t want to,” she said, crossing her arms across her c*hest and putting her l*ips. “Please ask them to leave.”
