His wife thought differently. After knowing about her daughter’s arrest, Hannah first argued with her husband, then came to Parrington to make sure her daughter didn’t suffer in jail.
Danika sighed in relief after the call with her uncle. She didn’t have much to worry about, now that her uncle was onboard. She then went to the building entrance, ready to go to the hospital for her scheduled surgeries in the afternoon.
Max stopped her near the entrance. “Danika? You’re still in the mood to work after what happened with Eustace?”
“You look happy with that news,” Danika replied. She just realized that everyone seemed to know about her breakup.
“Who had leaked the news?” she wondered.
It wasn’t her, so it must be Eustace.
Was he eager to let everyone know they had broken up? To announce him leaving her?
Danika’s heart ached.
“Good. He’s an asshole.” Max was glad to hear the news. Eustace’s unhappiness delighted him to no end. Though their relationship had softened recently, he and Eustace would never be friends.
Danika moved past Max and readied to leave. “You don’t have to tell me about him. I’m not interested.”
“Hey-”
But Danika had already driven away.
Max hummed and walked into the building, heading straight for Jade’s office.
“Do you know anything about Eustace and Danika’s breakup?” he asked Jade, hoping to hear something from her.
Jade shook her head. “I don’t know. Danika won’t say anything either.”
“Weird. I wonder what led to their breakup.” Eustace wouldn’t have broken up with Danika, given how serious their relationship had been. So, she must’ve started it.
But why?
Jade shot him a look while he was deep in thought. “And why are you here again? Pearson Ltd. going bankrupt?”
“I’m here to invite you for lunch, of course. We’re business partners now, no?” Max grinned. Ever since he had reclaimed Pearson Ltd. with Eustace’s help, things had gotten easier for him. All he was doing now was rejecting the fact Eustace had helped him, so he could continue watching him suffer.
Jade rolled her eyes. “You think I have time to have lunch with you when we’re still knee-deep in the copyright issue.”
Why hadn’t Max told them Yvonne had opened a competitive shop opposite theirs in the mall he owned?
Meanwhile, Max remained clueless. He wasn’t involved in the nitty-gritty of this business, so there was no way he would’ve known who rented a lot in his mall.
“Do you need my help?” he asked, though he had actually done his own investigations. He just hadn’t told Jade.
The woman shook her head, explaining what had happened. “The police have taken Felicity in. I’m gonna go to the station now. You can enjoy lunch by yourself.”
“I’ll see you out.” Max got up. Jade didn’t refuse him. She swiftly got on her ride and went straight to the police station.
Felicity had come clean about the entire thing, leading to the police swiftly issuing an arrest warrant for industrial espionage. Naturally, the legal suit against Yvonne was quickly filed.
Yvonne was unfazed, however. She closed up shop in the mall, its purpose of ruining La Vie Jen Rose Designs now fulfilled. Plus, she was still overjoyed from hearing about Danika and Eustace’s breakup.
Finally!
“How could I not ‘console’ poor Danika now, hm?” she thought before heading to find Danika.
Danika came out from the surgery room exhausted.
“Here.” Christopher offered a bottle of water to her, but she didn’t take it.
“Why are you here?” she asked, thinking if the man couldn’t leave her alone for once.
“Just worried about you.” He smiled, following her to her office.
Danika sat back in her chair, resting. “I’m fine. Nothing to worry about.”
“Are you sure you’re fine?” Christopher sat down opposite her. “You don’t need to act tough, you know.”
Danika glared at him, too lazy to speak.
“Breakups are bound to hurt. But you know what they say, time and rebounds are the best way to make it through.” Christopher grinned. “So why don’t you reconsider being with me? I’m way better than Eustace Quincey, let me tell you that.”
Danika wanted to hit him, but she held back. “How many times do I need to tell you? I don’t like Have you never taken me seriously?”
you.
She hadn’t been interested in Christopher once, and that wouldn’t change even if Eustace weren’t in the picture.
“Things change, don’t they? Just because you weren’t interested before doesn’t mean you won’t ever be.” Christopher shrugged. There was no reason to give up now, especially when Danika was single.
Danika sighed and pinched her nose bridge.
“Are you okay? I can send you back if you need to rest,” Christopher quickly offered.
Danika nodded. She just wanted to lay in bed right now. It didn’t matter who or what got her there.
She closed her eyes to rest the moment she got into Christopher’s car, the man staying silent in response. He wasn’t going to ruin things by rushing her.
They quickly left the hospital, oblivious to the car parked a way away from the entrance, its passengers silently watching things unfold.
Eustace’s heart tightened painfully as he watched Danika leave in Christopher’s car. The pain was so great he had to bend over, gently soothing himself.
Vincent panicked upon seeing him. “Are you alright, Mr. Quincey?”
“I’m fine. Let’s go.” Eustace forced himself to sit up.
“I will explain everything to Danika after dealing with Mortimer,” he thought.
“Why don’t we get you a check-up, sir?” Vincent added, still worried. They were right outside the hospital, after all.
Eustace gave him a cold glare, to which Vincent quickly started the car. “Apologies, sir. We’ll leave right away.”
Danika had stepped out of Christopher’s car when he turned off his engine, seemingly intending to follow her upstairs. “Go home. I don’t have the energy to deal with you right now.”
“Alright.” Christopher nodded. “I ordered takeout for you, by the way. It should be delivered soon. Instant noodles aren’t good for you long term.”
Danika waved a hand without looking back.
Behind her, Christopher smiled, feeling smug. “Progress!” he thought.
Danika went upstairs to her condo, then noticed Yvonne standing outside. Her annoyance grew sharper in response.
“Hey~ How’s it feel to be dumped by Eustace again? Can’t wait to leave Parrington with your tail between your legs, huh?” Yvonne said, walking up to her.
How did Yvonne have time to disregard her own problem? Wasn’t Simone halfway through taking over her in-law’s inheritance?
Danika stepped past her and took out her keys, ignoring Yvonne.
“You two broke up because you asked about that woman, didn’t you?” Yvonne chittered like a magpie. Danika said nothing, which she took as assent. “How silly of you, Danika. Don’t you know Eustace will only get upset by those questions? No wonder he wanted to break up with you.” She truly felt like she had finally won.
Irritated, Danika glared at her. “Why don’t you spend the time tittering about whether we broke up worrying about what to do once Simone becomes heir to the Blooms instead.”
Yvonne paled almost instantly. “Even if she does, Sam still has shares in the company, so I don’t have to worry about being in poverty,” she gritted out.
