“I don’t like this at all, baby girl!” Hawk growled, grabbing her by her waist and lifting her to k*iss her as if she was as light as a feather.
She k*issed him back. “See you tomorrow.”
“See you tonight!”
“I will be latching my window!”
He made her stand on her feet. “Watch me.”
Lia giggled. She walked to the car, waving them goodbye. The driver smiled at her. “I have to return as soon as I drop you home, Miss Lia.” He revved up the engine. “Mr. Mendez has to go to the demon city.”
“Oh, and where exactly is the demon city?” she asked, curious about it.
“It’s pretty far from here. He is coming up with a hotel project over there.”
“Does that place actually have demons?”
The driver chuckled. “Yes, that place is-”
The car suddenly swerved as if hit by something. “Rick!” she screamed driver’s name. Pain shot through her shoulders and c*hest and the world began fading around her. She felt the car toppling over. Something exploded and the world went black.
“And how was your day?” Hunter asked his sons as he leaned back into his chair of the library. He had just finished his end of day meeting with Elijah, wr*pping up whatever businesses they had for the day. His sons had joined him for the meeting.
There was a silly smile on Hawk’s face while Arthur grinned.
“Now that’s a good sign.” Hunter swirled his whiskey, feeling happy. “I think I will talk to Shawn soon. I want to see my grand pup.”
“Come on Dad!” Arthur replied with a pale blush. “I am sure Lia is going to go ballistic the moment we even talk about marriage.”
“Why?” Elijah frowned. “She is eighteen, just as old as Mia and River were when they married us. Moreover, she needs to be trained as the Luna of the pack.”
Hawk rolled his eyes. He put his l*egs up on the couch and leaned back on the armrest with his h*ands cradling his head. “You don’t know Lia,” he remarked. “She is too career oriented. I highly doubt that she is going to settle down as Luna unless she is qualified enough to have a job!”
“That’s right,” Arthur added. “She wants to go to college.”
Elijah jerked his head back. “That is very ambitious of her. As the Luna of the pack she will not have time for anything other than just being that!”
Arthur took a deep breath in. “She is pretty headstrong. Back at her school in Blowing Rock, Natalie didn’t have enough money for education, so Lia worked h*ard to earn a few scholarsh*ps. That’s the kind of determination she has.” Though he sounded casual, the pride he was feeling for his mate was evident.
“I will follow Lia to the college if she wants to go there,” Hawk said. “I won’t leave her alone.”
While Elijah supp**ssed a chuckle at how protective Hawk was, Hunter couldn’t stop grinning. “If Lia goes to college, I would want both of you to go with her.”
Arthur’s l*ips curled up. His parents were the most supportive ever since Lia had come. The twins had missed Lia to the extent that they had shut down internally. They had girlfriends, but they could never commit to them. There was an empty feeling in their hearts. When Lia stormed into their life, their empty hearts were filled with warmth and so much love that they glowed with it. The boys were complete with Lia in their life.
A persistent knock on the door of the library interrupted them.
“Is Asher knocking?” Elijah’s brows furrowed. Asher was a calm and reserved Gamma who usually used his satellite phone to communicate with his Alpha or Beta.
Hunter shrugged. “Come in, Asher.”
“Alpha,” Asher called. “I am sorry but you have to take this call.” Asher came to Hunter and practically shoved the phone in his face. “It’s from the hospital.”
Hunter frowned and took the phone from him. “Hello… Yes, this Alpha Hunter. Yes, I know her.” Arthur and Hawk watched their father’s face change from confusion to worry and then blood drained from his face. He clenched his jaw. “I am coming there now. What about her family? Have you informed them? Okay. And how is the driver? Okay. Thank you.” He gave the phone to Asher. “Get a car ready now,” he commanded him, his voice spilling his Alpha aura.
“What’s wrong?” Arthur asked. He had a terrible feeling in the pit of his stomach.
Hunter let out a rough exhale. “It’s Lia. She’s been in an accident. The ambulance brought her and her driver to the hospital.”
Hawk sprang up as Arthur shot up to his feet. “No!” Goosebumps lined his skin. “It can’t be!” Hawk rasped. “I will drive!” he said. He didn’t even bother to wait for anyone and darted towards the door with his brother. Hunter and Elijah followed them. Hawk sprinted to the garage to get a car. Arthur sat beside him feeling too impatient. Their wolves wanted to come out. “I shouldn’t have allowed her to go alone,” Arthur said, feeling like he had lost everything in his life.
When they reached the hospital, Hawk jabbed the floor of the hospital elevator, willing it to go faster. Arthur’s muscles were corded in pain. His biceps bulged. There was a buzzing in his head as anger and anxiety swirled in. Hawk had clenched his fists to stop himself from shifting into his Lycan. His beast wanted to rip apart everyone who was responsible for the accident. But first they wanted to see their mate. A deep protective growl came from his c*hest when he thought about Lia. He didn’t want to think of what could have happened to her.
They pushed past their father and his Beta when the elevator door dinged open. As soon as they reached the room where she was, they saw that a doctor was attending to her. There were tubes running out of her h*ands and her face was bruised. She was lying frightfully still. Their hearts stopped at what they saw.
The overhead light did nothing to hide her complexion. It was paler than her usual rosy hue. There were so many bruises on her cheeks that would slowly turn purple within a few hours. Her golden hair was pulled back and a bandage was wr*pped around her forehead.
The doctor looked up at them. He waved them to come in. The twins went in with Hunter and Elijah after them. “Lia,” Arthur called her softly, willing her to hear him. He reached out for her h*and and grabbed it in his large ones. Hawk also grabbed her other h*and, wr*pping it in his own larger ones. The bruise on her face and arms made them wince in pain. They felt their hearts would bleed to death.
“How is she?” Hunter asked the doctor.
“She is badly bruised but because she was wearing a seatbelt, she escaped death. She has a minor concussion in her head, but it will go in a day. She is responding to medication pretty well. But-” the doctor looked at the twins with concern. “She would need a lot of rest. No school for her until she recovers. There is a minor ligament injury in her calf muscles which would need time to fix.”
The door opened and Shawn walked in along with Lena. He was looking paler than usual and his eyes were blood red and swollen, which meant that he had cried. “Hunter!” he growled. “I want to know who did it. I swear I am going to make their life a living hell. And you have to help me find them!”
Hunter nodded. He placed his h*and on Shawn’s shoulder. He could understand how Shawn was feeling. He had found his daughter after so long and she met with a life-threatening accident in less than a month. “I will. I promise.”
Arthur and Hawk stared at their mate, feeling her pain and trying to remind themselves that she was safe and didn’t have serious injuries. Arthur sat on the edge of the bed just to hear her breathing, confirming that she was in a deep sleep.
Both of them remained absolutely quiet as the others talked. They only focused on her breathing. With their h*ands wr*pped around hers, they felt close to her.
The doctor assured Shawn that she was safe as Hunter called Asher to check all the cameras that were available in that part of the road.
While everyone left once in a while, Arthur and Hawk refused to leave her. It was about 10 PM when Hawk got up to go to the bathroom.
“Do you want coffee?” Shawn asked Arthur. “I am going down to get one.”
Arthur nodded, while still looking at Lia.
“You both should go and rest for a while.” Shawn could see how tense the twins were.
