“Mr. De Marco, are you jealous?” Kenny taunted smugly. “But I’m sorry. You can’t join in the fun. River is so smart and pretty. Only shortsighted men would dump her!”
“Enough, Kenny!” River intervened.
But Kenny continued. “It’s the truth, isn’t it? Any wise man would see what a gem you are!”
“Kenny is right.” Neil chimed in. His displeasure was evident as he looked at Noah. “Only narrow- minded men fail to see River’s beauty.”
Noah’s face twisted with disdain. “Is there something wrong with my questions?”
Neil retorted, “Don’t you find them hurtful?”
Noah refused to back down “Did I hurt River or you?”
“Isn’t that a snide remark directed at everyone here?”
River shouted, “Stop arguing!”
Unfortunately, she couldn’t get them to stop
Noah narrowed his eyes and ignored River. “Isn’t that the reality? Xander, I was wrong about you. Your kids‘ mother stays in touch with so many men, yet you seem to get along with them just fine.”
Neil’s anger flared. “You have no idea. Stop making baseless accusations.”
Noah ridiculed, “I saw it. Isn’t that evidence?”
River tried to intervene again. “Can you guys just stop? Noah, can your thoughts alone be considered evidence? Why do you think that way?”
“Eh…” Suddenly, Alex asked, “River, is it your kid’s birthday today?”
River felt relieved when Alex stepped in to mediate the situation.
“No, we’re here to celebrate the kids getting into elementary school,” River clarified
“Tyler and Liora skipped a grade, too?” Alex asked, bewildered. ‘So did Axel”
Paige rolled her eyes. “I don’t think it’s about you.”
Alex countered, “Of course it is. It means River and Noah have strong genes. That’s why their kids are so smart. I need to learn from them for our kids to excel, too.”
Paige blushed. “You’re shameless.”
“Yes,” Alex agreed. “I’m planning for our future.”
Then, he turned to Neil. “Don’t you think so, Neil?”
Neil suffered in silence while meeting Alex’s gaze. Tyler and Liora are my kids.”
Kenny widened his eyes slowly upon hearing Neil’s statement. ‘Have I missed some gossip? G
pretends with Neil in front of Noah!”
Sensing Kenny’s expression, Alex became suspicious. He wondered if Kenny was unaware of it.
But that couldn’t be…
Kenny was River’s work partner and friend. Surely, he should know about the relationship between the children and Neil
Alex then looked at Kenny. “You can’t handle your drinks, Kenny. Just stop. Haven’t you learned from your past experiences?”
Kenny abruptly stared at Alex. “What did you say?
Alex innocently repeated, “I said you can’t handle your drinks.”
“Damn!” Kenny got competitive. ‘You’re saying I can’t drink? Let’s have a one–on–one to see who’s stronger.”
An idea crossed Alex’s mind. He had to gauge Kenny’s intentions tonight. “Okay, I won’t back down!”
Kenny angrily ordered some wine to challenge Alex.
River immediately glanced at Neil when his argument with Noah was interrupted. “Go look after the kids.”
Neil didn’t want to argue with Noah on this special day. He simply stood up to go play with the children.
Paige then handed a glass of wine to River. “River, let’s have a drink.”
River was about to accept it when Scott reminded her, “No, you can’t. You’ve just left the hospital. You need to take care of your injuries.”
River blushed as she regained her senses. “Oh, right, I forgot.”
Scott then offered River a glass of juice. “Have this. The vitamins will help you recover faster.”
“Alright, thanks,” River accepted it.
Noah’s expression darkened when he noticed how tenderly River spoke to Scott. He wondered why she was so harsh with him but acted differently with Scott. 1
At the same time, Paige was puzzled by his expression
Hadn’t he noticed that River seemed to be close to Scott? Did jealousy make men livious?
Half an hour later, Noah’s phone suddenly rang
Seeing the unfamiliar number, he stepped outside to take the call.
A hateful voice came through when he answered. “It’s me, Casey.”
“What do you want?” Noah’s face grew cold.
Casey chuckled and explained, “I wanted to let you know that I’m taking Ms. Healy out for dinner tomorrow.”
“Casey De Marco!” Noah gritted his teeth. “Don’t you dare get near River!”
Noah’s reaction only amused Casey further. “Are you nervous or scared? Worried I might make a move on her?”
Noah exploded in anger. “Casey, I’m going to have someone teach you a lesson tomorrow.”
Casey responded calmly. “Shouldn’t you ask Ms. Healy about this before taking any action.
against me?”
Noah retorted, “I can hit you, and I don’t need River’s approval!”
“Alright, we’ll see about that.”
Casey hung up.
Noah clenched his phone tightly, his demeanor turning cold and fierce.
Even though he opposed River, he wouldn’t allow anything to happen to her at Casey’s hands.
River stood up, stepped out of the hall, and intended to ask a waiter about the restroom’s location when someone suddenly grabbed her wrist. They pulled her into a private room while she was still dazed
Startled, she gazed up to see Noah’s furious face as the door closed behind her. She quickly pulled. her hand away and frowned. “Noah, do you have no respect for others?”
“Tell me! What’s going on between you and Casey?!” Noah’s eyes bore into her with intensity.
River remained composed. “Why should I divulge the details of my relationship with Casey to you?‘
“River, he’s even more dangerous than you realize!” Noah controlled his anger.
River chuckled. “Why are you telling me this? Are you afraid Casey might harm me?”
Noah narrowed his eyes. “I just wanted to remind you of how dangerous he can be-”
River cut in, “I don’t need that! Please stop meddling in my affairs with others, especially since you don’t care whether I live or die.”
“Do you insist on staying in contact with Casey?”
“Yes, and please stop being so nosy!” River said firmly.
Noah couldn’t believe his ears, and his suppressed anger surged within him. He stared at
River’s determined expression and mocked, “It seems like you’ve developed quite an affinity for him in such a short time.”
River sneered. “Can’t men and women just be friends?”
Noah’s eyes grew colder. “Well, you’re the first one who wants to befriend someone like Casey.”
River countered. “You really need to get a pair of glasses. Don’t always believe everything your eyes see!*
After that, she turned and left the private room.
Noah followed, his frustration increasing.
He wondered what he could say to dissuade River from staying in contact with Casey.
He was willing to endure her dating someone else, even if it pained him. But Casey was absolutely out of the question.
Alex noticed Kenny’s increasing drunkenness and glanced at Paige, who was reclining on the sofa.
He remarked, “I think we should call it quits. There’s no point in drinking like this.”
Kenny scowled. “Stop? We haven’t even had our fill!”
Alex replied, “If we don’t stop, we won’t be able to play games or have a decent conversation. It’s monotonous to just keep drinking”
Kenny blinked, baffled. “What do you want to talk about?”
“You’re always dishonest. I’d rather not converse with you “With that, Alex got up.
“Hey, you haven’t explained. Why do you think I’m dishonest?” Kenny stopped Alex.
Kenny was too drunk to understand what Alex meant. But he hadn’t had his fill of wine yet-
quitting now was unexciting.
Seeing this, Alex sat back. “I’m curious why Neil agreed to let River’s children take her sumame.”
Kenny dismissed it. “It’s not a big deal. They can have whatever last name they want.”
Casey responded calmly. “Shouldn’t you ask Ms. Healy about this before taking any action.
