Eustace thought for a while and thought it made sense. They would be able to ambush him at the entrance, and it’d be safer.
The decision was made. Danika made a sound, and Brett’s attention was caught easily. “Julie?”
No one answered. He began to get worried and walked out with his gun.
Eustace and Danika were hiding on either side of the cockpit door. The moment Brett appeared at the entrance, Eustace threw himself at him and knocked him to the floor.
There was a loud bang. Everyone turned pale.
“Eustace!” Danika screamed.
Eustace waved his hand. “I’m fine.”
The bullet had hit the floor, not him. Brett was quickly tied up, but his bullet was causing a problem. The plane was shot, and since it was on autopilot mode, it began to fall.
“I’ll look at the pilot.” Danika walked toward the cockpit. If the pilots were just knocked out, they could wake them up. However, that wasn’t the case. Julie was thorough in her plan. The coffee in the pilot’s cup was laced with poison, and the pilot was poisoned.
“What can we do?” The flight attendants could see that the terrorists were tied up. They walked into the cockpit and turned pale when they saw the dead pilot. Without the pilot, they would crash at this rate.
At the crucial moment, Danika asked, “Can you fly a plane?” She was directing the question toward Eustace.
He wasn’t sure, either. “I’ve only done simulations.”
Danika looked at the flight attendants and asked, “Go and ask the passengers if anyone can fly a plane.”
The flight attendant turned and left but returned quickly. “No.”
It was to be expected. Not a lot of people could fly a plane. Danika had no choice but to sit in the pilot’s seat.
“This is different from a simulator. Don’t be rash.” The flight attendant wanted to stop her.
Danika looked at her and asked, “Why don’t you try?”
The flight attendant went quiet. She wouldn’t be a flight attendant if she knew.
“Can you fly?” Eustace was surprised.
“Only on simulators, like you.” Danika smiled at him. She already had her hands on the controls. “We only have ourselves to depend on right now.” She had only flown virtual planes, but she knew the basics of airplane controls. She didn’t want to die, and there was no other choice.
“You’ll take the co-pilot’s seat. Contact the cell towers. I’m going to land this plane. Make them clear out the runway and prepare a few ambulances.
Danika wasn’t too confident in her skills, but she wouldn’t have taken control if someone else knew how to fly. She looked at the flight attendants. “Make all the passengers put on their seatbelts and stay put. You’ll have to secure yourselves, too.”
“Okay.” They ran to the cabins.
“What else?” someone asked.
“Pray to God.” Danika smiled. She yanked at the controls, making the diving plane jerk up.
At the same time, Parrington had received Eustace’s message. Everyone was stunned.
“You’re telling me that two inexperienced people are flying the plane?”
Silence filled the area. They couldn’t imagine what would happen.
“Contact the nearest runway and make preparations,” someone ordered. “Prepare for the worst.”
In Claymond City, an ambulance, a fire truck, and a police car were on standby in a row on the runway. They were waiting for the plane to land.
Danika looked ahead, a strange calm taking over.
“Are you sure about this?” On the other hand, Eustace was worried, not for himself, but for Danika.
Danika smiled and said sarcastically, “It’s a little too late to ask, isn’t it?”
What could Eustace do if she was feeling unsure?
“True.” Eustace smiled lightly and said nothing else.
“Are you afraid?” Danika looked at him, smiling. “Of dying like this?”
“Not really. As long as I’m with you, death doesn’t seem as scary.” These words came straight from Eustace’s heart, but Danika didn’t feel that way.
She didn’t mock him, however. In a situation like this, they really had no choice when it came to fear.
“Prepare to land,” she said calmly. Eustace got himself ready.
The plane began to dip. Claymond City and Parrington were not far from each other. The fuel was almost used up, or they would have flown a little longer.
The city entered Danika’s field of sight. She could see the lights from the airport runway, and she couldn’t help feeling stirred, there were hundreds of lives in her hands right now.
“Brace yourselves!”
The plane hit the ground. Because Danika wasn’t a professional, the plane was moving too quickly. She couldn’t quite stop it.
“It’s going to crash!” The passengers saw the control tower a distance away. They would crash into it very soon at the rate that they were going.
Even the people in the control tower were running for their lives. They all thought it was very likely that the plane would crash into them.
“Just fucking stop already.” Danika said, gritting her teeth. She pulled at the controls, sweat running down her forehead as she stared at the control tower.
They were in luck. The plane stopped in front of the control tower with only twelve inches to spare. One second later, and they would have crashed.
Once the plane stopped, Danika heard the exclamations of joy from the cabins. The passengers were obviously shaken but happy.
Danika leaned back in her seat. She’d used up all of her strength moments before.
Eustace unlatched his seatbelt and went toward her. “You’re amazing, Danika.”
She smiled. “Thanks. I think so, too.”
She wasn’t going to be humble about it: For an inexperienced pilot, this was great. But there was always room for improvement. She had to learn how to fly a plane now, in case something like this happened again.
“No, no! This won’t happen again,” she told herself.
The doors slid open. The flight attendants ushered everyone down the evacuation slide, and the two terrorists were immediately handed over to the police. Danika would find out soon enough on the news about what would happen to them next.
Danika only walked out when everyone was gone.
“Thank you.” Some of the flight attendants were still there. They thanked her when they saw her coming out.
She waved her hands. “No need to thank me. I wasn’t too sure about anything.” She was merely left with no choice but to fly. However, the flight attendants were still grateful. They knew that this flight could have been their last if it weren’t for her.
This was nail-biting…
