The dinner was ready in half-an-hour and she laid out the table. “Arthur!” she shouted. “It’s ready.”
Arthur hurried down, still talking to his father. “When do you want us to come?” he asked. “Won’t that be too late?” A pause. He let out a rough exhale. “Why not Lia?” A longer pause. He looked up at her and she m*outhed that she would go with him. “She is insisting that she come there and-” He was cut off. “But father-” A heavy knock on the door disturbed them. Lia jumped up. “Hawk!”
Arthur snapped his head up. He put his h*and up for her to stop. “Father, I will call you again. Someone is out here.” He disconnected the call and placed his f*inger on his l*ips.
“What happened?” Lia asked, her hackles raised.
Arthur clenched his teeth and narrowed his eyes at the door. “It smells like Hawk’s shampoo,” he almost whispered.
Lia gasped. Her stomach twisted into a thousand knots. “Should I open the door?” she whispered back. “No, I will.” He padded his way to the front door and opened it. There was no one. Startled, he stepped out onto the porch and whipped his head around to scan the pavement, the garden and the road in front. The whole place was shrouded in darkness with a lone light burning some twenty meters away. He came in and locked his door. “Don’t step out tonight.”
“I won’t,” she said, trying to take the thorns of fear out of her c*hest.
Arthur came to her, grabbed her h*and and took her to the bedroom.
The next morning they woke up early and zipped their bags to go to their pack. “I hope dad doesn’t get mad, seeing me,” she sighed. “But I don’t want to stay here when the pack is in so much trouble. I wish Hawk was here.”
Arthur didn’t reply. His mind was working overtime, thinking of one after the other scenarios. He zipped his bag and said, “We have to be at the helipad in an hour. Are you packed?”
She nodded, anxiety written all over her face.
“Hey!” He came to her and curled his arm around her waist. He pulled her towards him and lifted her chin up. “Why are you scared? Nothing is going to happen.”
“I hope so. This whole situation is so damn strange. Yesterday, I saw a wolf right outside the kitchen when I was making dinner. It was so weird that it glared at me and then ran away.”
Arthur jerked his head back. “Why didn’t you mention it yesterday?”
“I completely forgot,” she said, remembering that he was talking to Hunter and it was a long conversation.
Arthur pressed his l*ips in a thin line. “Never mind. We are getting late.” He picked up the bags as Lia picked up her purse. They dashed down and as soon as Lia opened the door, she saw a bottle of shampoo kept right in front. Her m*outh dropped to the floor. She picked it up. “This is Hawk’s shampoo?”
Arthur came near her to examine it. “Yes!” he sounded bewildered. He investigated the lonely road in the front and sniffed, but other than the smell of his shampoo, there was nothing else. “Crazy!” he growled. “Give it to me.” He took the bottle, stowed it in the side zip of his bag and said, “Let’s go. We don’t have time to investigate.” The helicopter was waiting for them at the private helipad. The pilot greeted both of them and as soon as they were seated, strapped and had headphones, the pilot took the chopper to the air.
The flight to the Dark Moon pack was two hours. As soon as they landed, they saw two black sedans pulling in. Elijah and Mia had come to take them.
“River and Alpha Hunter have already left. They asked me to take you directly to the council,” Elijah said. Lia hugged Mia. “I am finding this so strange!” she breathed. “Were you able to find the basis of this dispute?” Mia shook her head. “Not really, but our spies say that Alpha Brom is going to talk about an old clause in the treaty that existed between all the packs. It was effective over a hundred years ago. And according to that treaty, a pack could only be merged with yours if you k*illed the Alpha of that pack. Basically, survival of the fittest.”
“That’s bloody ridiculous!” Arthur snarled. “We have progressed so much. What kind of a treaty is that? Where the hell did he dig it from?” If that treaty was effective, so many things could go wrong. A shudder passed through him. The Dark Moon pack would get divided into two.
“We all know that this is a stupid treaty because things have changed. I just hope that the Elders don’t stick with it,” Elijah said dryly.
They were on the road for about seven hours before reaching the meeting venue. It was 9 PM. Hunter and River came out to meet them along with other main members of the pack. Shawn and Lena were also present. “When is the meeting?” Arthur asked as he watched his mother hugging Lia. He couldn’t help thinking that his mother and father had done so much to put the two packs together. Not only that because of their progressive nature, so many Lycans and werewolves found their mates. And now the Alpha of the Pine pack was going to throw them all into the dark ages. It made him feel bad and protective about his mother. “It will start tomorrow at 10 AM,” Hunter replied. “Half of the Elders have arrived while some will come tomorrow.”
“You told me that the Elders are divided on this matter.”
“They are.”
“So, it’s better that they don’t come?”
“No, I want all of them to come,” Hunter said as they walked inside the hotel. “That way we will know the exact numbers that are with us.”
“Where is Hawk?” Arthur looked around to find him, his worry growing a nigh higher. “He hasn’t come,” came Hunter’s clipped answer.
“Lia?” Arthur sat by her side on the bed and curled his arm around her shoulder. “What are you thinking?” She had stabbed her f*ingers in her hair with her face lowered. She was staring at her lap with tension coiling her every muscle.
She s*ucked in a sharp breath. She looked at him. “There has to be a way to come out of this situation. Why is an old treaty that was penned hundred years back still valid? And where the hell did Alpha Brom get hold of that old document? Isn’t it preserved someplace? Like in the human world, we preserve such old documents in special archive cells. No one is allowed to enter them without special permission!”
A crease formed between his eyebrows. “I am not sure, but it is the Elders’ responsibility to take care of old documents.”
“If that is true, then Alpha Brom had approached one of the Elders already,” she mused.
Arthur pursed his l*ips. “Sleep Lia. There’s a lot to do tomorrow and I want you to calm down.”
“How can I calm down, Arthur?” she said, leaning against his arm. “I don’t want the pack to split. I want to stay with both of you. Why is Alpha Brom even asking for the split? What could be the reason? Because as far I know and gathered from your mom, Brom has never had any problems with our pack nor has he had an old enmity with us. So what is it all about?”
He made her lie with him and covered her with a blanket. “I have no idea,” he breathed. “But whatever the reason is, it has to be something really urgent for him to call a council meeting. We will come to know about it tomorrow.” She turned and curled beside. He pulled her closer, wrapping his arm around her. “I wish Hawk was here,” she murmured.
“Lia!” Arthur’s voice jerked her awake. “It is 9 AM, baby girl. Please get ready. We have to be at the meeting hall by 10 AM and dad wants to speak with us.”
