“I admit that you’re right.I was wrong.I was too young at the time to think about the consequences, and I didn’t expect your mother to take it so far.”
He really didn’t expect Eustace’s mother would commit suicide.
Eustace couldn’t be bothered to discern whether Mortimer meant what he’d said.It didn’t matter to him the least bit.
“Ask Alfred to stay away from Danika. No matter what plans you two have, don’t drag Danika into any of them.”
Eustace gave Mortimer a warning.
Mortimer laughed dryly. He didn’t agree, nor did he refuse. He simply smiled ambiguously, which made Eustace feel exceptionally irritated.
Why Do You Like Me?
When the two were in a stalemate, Danika came down from upstairs.
Eustace ignored Mortimer right away and walked over to her.
“Are you done talking to Grandpa?” he asked.
Danika nodded and glanced at Eustace meaningfully but didn’t say anything.
Eustace could feel the emotion in her eyes, but if she didn’t want to tell him about it, he wouldn’t ask—at least, not now.
Not long after, Old Mr.Quincey came down too.
“Let’s eat.” Soon, the four of them sat at the dining table.
Perhaps the atmosphere became a little awkward because of Danika’s presence.
Old Mr.Quincey knew that Danika wasn’t happy about what he’d told her, but he didn’t offer her words of advice. He figured she would have to get over it by herself, and there was no point in others persuading her.
It would only make her pull away even further. He then glanced at his grandson and saw that he’d been staring at Danika. He could only sigh helplessly.
Eustace was exceptional in every aspect; his only flaw was he loved too deeply when he fell for someone.
Old Mr.Quincey wondered how much more he would have to suffer at Danika’s hand.
As he thought of that, he decided it wasn’t his place to worry anymore.
They were all adults, so they should figure things out on their own.
“Miss Zellweger, my son, Alfred, is working in your company. Please offer him your guidance,”
Mortimer said suddenly, surprising the other three people at the table.
Danika was especially surprised.
”Why are you admitting so openly that Alfred is your son? Don’t you care about Old Mr.Quincey and Eustace’s feelings?” she wondered silently.
She looked at Old Mr.Quincey, who seemed unruffled as usual.
He carried on eating indifferently, not finding Mortimer’s words surprising at all.
Returning to her senses, Danika smiled politely and neutrally.
“If Alfred is capable, he’ll naturally get to where he deserves to be; if not, even if you pave the way for him as a father, I’m afraid you’ll just waste your time in the end.”
She wasn’t stupid.
Just when she was close to finding out about everything from Old Mr.Quincey, Alfred suddenly came to work in her company.
The turn of events definitely had something to do with her identity.
Everyone approached her with ulterior motives.
Under such a circumstance, it was hard for Danika to feel happy about what was unfolding around her.
Mortimer’s face pulled down slightly; he didn’t expect Danika would respond to him so bluntly.
Danika didn’t pay any attention to him.
She focused on eating her food and didn’t give a damn what he thought.
Eustace was deeply overjoyed at this and felt that Danika retorted well.
After dinner, it was time for Danika to leave.
Eustace walked out of the Old Mansion with her.
On the way back to the apartment, Danika didn’t speak.
Her silence made Eustace a little uneasy.
“Danika, you came to ask Grandpa about your birth and origin, right?”
Eustace asked, feeling that staying in that awkward silence wouldn’t do them any good.
Danika withdrew her gaze from the scenery outside and looked at him indifferently.
“You knew, didn’t you?”
Eustace didn’t deny it.He understood that he could no longer deceive Danika.
Otherwise, he would only push her further and further away.
Danika chuckled humorlessly.
“Your grandfather said you didn’t know anything.”
She was actually hesitating about how to broach the subject with Eustace.
If she didn’t do it well, Eustace would feel she was suspecting him.
However, she now felt that she’d been careful and thought too much—he’d known all along.
“I only found out about it later on.”
At that time, he’d already fallen for Danika.
Danika didn’t care.
She sneered, “You know, Eustace.I’ve always wondered, was my true identity part of why you like me? It didn’t quite make sense for the CEO of Quincey Group to suddenly fall for me.”
She never believed in love at first sight nor felt that she was that attractive.
The only plausible explanation was that he’d approached her with something in mind from the very beginning.
Zero Trustworthiness
The brakes sounded, and the car stopped at the side of the road.
Danika was about to ask Eustace what was going on when she saw him looking at her intently. His look seemed to suggest that she had hurt his feelings.
“I should be the one feeling hurt,” Danika thought.
“Danika, am I such a terrible person in your eyes?”
Eustace asked in a low voice after some time; the tone of his voice was indescribably sad.
The sight of Eustace looking so broken tugged at Danika’s heartstrings, but she still smiled and said, “To tell you the truth, Eustace; your trustworthiness is basically zero.”
Eustace smiled bitterly, knowing that this was all his own doing.
“I’m sorry…”
“You don’t have to apologize to me, even if you really had ulterior motives at the beginning, I don’t care. After all, I know you meant it when you showed me you genuinely loved me, and I really did feel happiness during those times.”
She looked at Eustace with a faint smile as she said that.
However, those words cut at Eustace’s heart like knives, bringing him immense torment.
“Danika…”
“It’s getting late. You should continue driving back.”
Danika withdrew her gaze and no longer looked at Eustace but at the scenery outside the window again. It was as if she didn’t want to continue talking.
Eustace felt helpless, and he didn’t know how to explain everything to her.
After all, the fact remained that he’d known about it for some time and didn’t tell her.
The car started again.
After a short while, they arrived at the Perry Residence.
They walked into the elevator one after the other, but no one spoke.
Soon, Danika arrived at her door, and Eustace felt that if he didn’t say something, he would lose his chance.
