“You should be happy that other Elders are taking her mental sickness into consideration, but they won’t consider that you left her without supervision and treatment. Had she been on medication, this situation could have been averted,” Wyn remarked. “As far as your claim of splitting the Dark Moon pack is considered, we accept that. Now it is up to Hunter and River to solve the problem and they have one day for it. I appoint Elder Gregory to oversee that our decision is implemented. The Elders have passed a decision and this meeting is dismissed.” He studied all those present in the room. “After this issue is over, this point of the treaty will be revised to make it more amenable.” Wyn got up. “Don’t forget to deposit five hundred thousand dollars in the Elders’treasury.” As the Elders left the meeting room, others followed them and Brom was left sitting alone over there with his h*and on his head. He didn’t know that what he had come for would bear this consequence. Only if his daughter had remained under control. Trig entered the room and said, “Alpha Brom, I have sent Maggie to the pack where the doctors will attend to her. Do you want me to do anything else?”
Brom looked at him and said, “Yes, come with me to meet Alpha Hunter.”
“Alpha Brom, I know you don’t want to listen to me, but we have made a serious mistake by raking this issue,” Trig said with a defeated sigh.
Brom clenched his jaw and looked away.
Trig continued, “Shawn Mendez is Lia’s father. He will withdraw every investment that he has made in our pack after this incident. We needed his investments in order to generate jobs. Now that is gone. Not only that, he may influence other businessmen to withdraw investments or projects from our pack. Shawn is an extremely wealthy and powerful businessman. And I have heard that he can do anything for his daughters. It’s just that he doesn’t show his power. Apart from that we’ve made enemies with the future Alphas, Arthur and Hawk.”
“What are you saying? That I should stay quiet after they have threatened to destroy me? I am going to make them pay back!” Brom growled.
“Alpha Brom, where are we going to get the money from?”
Brom got up and stormed out. “Come to the hotel with me.”
When they reached the hotel, Brom straightaway called Hunter. “You have to challenge River right now. Elder Wyn said that you have only a day for it. And I will look to see if the council’s decision is implemented. I have already called Elder Gregory to oversee.”
Hunter scoffed. “Of course yes. Council’s decision is important.”
River was standing right beside him, watching him with narrowed eyes. “You don’t want this, Alpha Brom,” she said.
He snickered. “I want this so badly that you can’t imagine.”
“Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you.”
“I will be ready with my popcorn when I see you two fighting. It is going to be interesting match.” Brom laughed. “However, I have a proposition. If you give me five hundred thousand dollars and Lia’s father doesn’t stop investing in my pack, I will withdraw my complaint.”
“That ship has sailed,” Hunter said coldly. “We will be ready by evening 6 PM. Meet us in the clearing in the woods up north.”
Brom could see his hopes crashing against a cliff. They didn’t take the bait. “Fine then. I will see you all with Elder Gregory.”
Alpha Brom had reached the clearing in the woods much before the designated time. He was rubbing his h*ands as he paced the ground. He was disturbed that Hunter didn’t accept his deal, which meant that whatever would be the outcome of the challenge, Shawn was going to retract his investments from the Pine pack, leaving his members high and dry. Not only that, he saw an opportunity to extract five hundred thousand dollars from Hunter by dropping a carrot in front of him, but Hunter wasn’t interested.
“Alpha Brom,” Trig said quietly. He was standing against a tree with his arms crossed across his c*hest. “What?” he asked, his fangs lengthening.
“In my opinion, we must just drop the charges gracefully and leave. Maybe, they will consider us and not withdraw investments. Shawn Mendez has a large investment in our pack. We need him. Let us just leave.”
Brom took a menacing step closer to his Beta. Trig shoved off the tree to stand straight. “We have come past all that, you fool. Now the only thing that remains is revenge which I won’t leave. Hunter and River haven’t agreed to my proposition. I am going to see their fall. One of them will lose their Alpha status here.”
Trig took a ragged breath. “Fine then. Let us wait for them to fight.” He walked away from there to sit on a stump of a tree while Brom resumed pacing. After about fifteen minutes, they heard footsteps.
Hunter and River came over and they were accompanied by all their family. Brom exchanged angry glances with Hunter. His eyes fell on Lia and he clenched his fists. Had this girl rejected Hawk, his daughter would have had a chance to become the Luna of Crescent pack. But all was not lost. He was sure that Hunter would defeat River easily and the packs would split. Once the packs broke apart, he was going to keep a watch on Hawk. He would make sure that he rejected the human girl.
“I have already created a circle for both of you to fight in,” he snickered, pointing at a circle he had drawn on the damp ground. “It would be interesting to see mates fight.”
Hunter gritted his teeth and glared at him. He didn’t speak a word and grasped River’s h*and t*ightly.
Elder Gregory walked in the clearing. He saw that both the parties were already there. “Since both of you are here, we will start the challenge in five minutes,” he announced. “If there is anything you want to say, I will hear it now.”
“There is nothing I want to say,” Brom snapped. “Let’s just hurry!”
“What about you, Hunter?” Elder Gregory asked.
“I don’t have anything to say,” Hunter said quietly.
“Okay then,” Gregory muttered. “Please inside the ring and stand on the opposite sides.”
Hunter hugged River t*ightly and they both entered the ring holding h*ands. River walked to the opposite side under the scrutinizing gaze of Brom as Hunter went to the other side.
When Gregory saw that they were ready, he said, “You may start!”
Excitedly, Brom came to stand near the ring. He watched the two of them come closer with their gazes locked. He laughed inside. He was the cause of the downfall of the Dark Moon pack. If he couldn’t win, he would not let others win. However, what happened next was not what he had expected.
River came to stand right in front of Hunter. The two stared intensely at each other and then suddenly River dropped to her knees. “Alpha Hunter,” she said. “You are so strong that you will defeat me easily. I accept defeat and am willing to give up my Alpha title. You may take over my pack and do whatever you like with it.”
“What the f*uck!” Brom roared. “This is cheating!” He whipped his head to look at Elder Gregory. “They are not fighting!”
Elder Gregory couldn’t help laughing at River’s antics. He was the one who had initially wanted Hawk to come to the Crescent pack as a child and grow up there, but at that time too, River refused. She was the most clever Alpha he had ever seen. By accepting defeat in front of Alpha Hunter, she was willing to give up her pack’s control in his h*ands. “Why?” he looked at Brom. “You wanted them to challenge each other to fight. They accepted the challenge. It is different what they do in that ring. There is no clause in the treaty on how to accept the challenge. Is there?”
