I grinned, thinking about the prize.
Maybe I should let her win just to ensure she got it.
She was going to be pissed.
Good. I liked her pissed off when I got her out of her clothes. She was wild when she was angry.
She’d definitely get her claws out.
But that didn’t mean she had to win this race.
She could win the other events. Not this one. It was expected of me to win. I always did.
I warmed up, stretching out my legs, controlling my breathing, clearing my mind, trying to focus on the race, on the finish line.
But then Lorelai laughed, that full laugh that made the mate in me proud. It was a different kind of pride than what I normally carried. It was one that meant I was proud my mate was happy.
Feeling the lightness in her laugh assured me she was okay.
I strived for that and took comfort in it so I could focus on the race again.
“Good luck with that whole Zen thing you normally do with Spitfire around,” Brax taunted, laughing as he eyed her.
He wasn’t wrong.
She was a distraction I had no hope of zoning out.
“Distract her for me; keep her behind. You know how much this win means to me,”
I growled.
That made Brax laugh harder. “You’re the only one who still cares about winning this thing. Your pack isn’t how they were when we first started these games, Kai.
They’re not going to care if you lose.”
“I’ll care. And they won’t respect me,” I grumbled. My father and mother had drilled it into me that I had to hold my respect, keep it, don’t let them see a weakness. I still fought that sentiment.
When it came to the race, those words rang truer than ever.
I shook my head, trying to get them out of it. I brushed my hair back from my face and looked through the sun at my mate.
She was still smiling, the sun glowing down on her.
Those words were made of fear, but we feared nothing more than losing her and our children now.
“Then you’re screwed, Kai. I have no willpower with our mate. She tells me to take you down and I’m coming for you, buddy,” Brax chuckled, standing up from stretching on the ground.
I frowned at him. “You think that’s what she’s going to do?” I looked over at her.
Brax shrugged. “No idea. But she’ll have something up her sleeve. She’s playing to win too. I say we let her. She can have the prize.” Brax wiggled his brows.
I grinned. I had been thinking the same thing before the competitiveness took over.
I huffed and stopped stretching.
Derik came over from talking to some of the other pack members who were wandering around with their families.
“The wolves are enjoying having the humans here this year,” Derik said, starting his stretching. He could run fast but Brax was slightly faster usually. They were both athletic enough but Brax’s breathing was better because of his swimming.
“Next year, we should invite the humans to join, add more events that they can join,” I offered.
Derik raised a brow in surprise. “That’s a good idea,” he said, still surprised.
“I’m becoming more susceptible to those,” I smirked.
“They can join in the swim,” Brax shrugged.
Derik nodded then strode off to talk to Lorelai and her mother, offering the idea. It brought a smile to both of their faces.
Lorelai came over after that and moved into my arms. I gripped her ass, giving it a playful squeeze.
“Don’t strain yourself running, Little Luna,” I said.
She smiled. “I won’t. I’m just going to take it easy for this one. Galen advised against running much,” she said.
I tensed. “Sit it out then.”
“I’ll just jog. He said that would be okay.”
Anger gripped me, and I tried to push it back, but it wouldn’t budge. The idea of my mate out there running, possibly in pain, possibly pushing herself too hard to win, made me want to lock her in her room so she couldn’t participate.
“Little Luna–“
Brax laughed a deep laugh, and I eyed him. He shook his head, trying to calm himself. “She’s already got you.” He laughed again and went to the starting line.
I frowned down at her, and she reached up on tiptoes to kiss me before I could say anything.
Then she jogged over to the start line with Brax, smiling at me with a wink.
I glared at her.
I walked over, arriving at the same time as Derik.
A few humans came too.
“I invited the humans to join the race and swim. They seemed excited.” I was proud of D. He had worked so hard to keep the packs together, to keep the humans happy with us. It had blown up in our face thanks to that asshole Valarian, but it had worked out eventually. And seeing it in the games was a huge achievement. One I didn’t think we’d get to see.
We all lined up, and I looked at Lorelai. She blew me a kiss, and I leaned in close to her.
“You forget that you are just as desperate for our touch as we are yours, Little Luna,” I whispered, then kissed her savagely. In a way that Derik scolded me for in public.
I kissed until she was breathing hard, then when I had to pull away, I sent images into her mind.
Ones of my cock inside her, thrusting hard, hitting her sweet spot.
She gasped, and her cheeks flushed, her lips parting.
I smirked and imagined playing with her clit.
It turned me the fuck on, but I was in control this time. I made sure she felt it.
She glared back at me, and I smirked.
Then Derik called for the start of the race, and I took off.
I ran fast, my thick legs boosting me from the starting line faster than the others. I ran every day with my pack, I ran the border, the patrols. I sparred, I fought.
The race was mine.
Until I was a few inches from the finish line and I heard Lorelai whisper, “Zale, Enzi. A little help here?” she said. But I heard it.
And then I was on the grass, sprawling where I tripped over the twins’ shadows that I couldn’t see.
Everyone gasped and then laughed from the sidelines.
I looked up to see Lorelai smirking as she waltzed across the finish line just ahead of me.
I glared then turned to the other racers.
They were all sprawled across the grass too.
I huffed and got up, going to my cheeky Little Luna. “Using the children? You do fight dirty.”
She grinned. “I wasn’t lying when I said Galen told me not to run. So I didn’t,” she shrugged.
