“That shadow shit is cheating,” Kai huffed.
I grinned and took Lorelai, holding her against me in the water.
“Thanks for keeping her warm for me,” I winked, winding up Kai even more. He seethed and even Lorelai laughed.
“Cross the finish line for us?” she urged Kai. He looked over at the edge of the lake and the spectators watching us.
“Fine, but when I come back, she’s mine again,” he said.
“Done,” I said.
Kai swam off toward the finish line and I looked back at Lorelai.
She had her legs around my waist, her trust in my hands.
“We’re going to go under for a second, okay?”
Her grip tightened around me, and I smiled, holding her securely.
“I’ve got you, Spitfire. Just trust me. We’re going to go under, then open your eyes,”
I said.
She was wary, the fear in her eyes making my heart ache. But she needed this. If only to get comfortable.
The lake led me to her when she was trapped; it told us it was being poisoned. She saved it. It would protect her like it did me. It would accept her shadows, whisper to them like they did to us.
“Okay,” she breathed.
I smiled and slowly lowered us into the water, stopping kicking so we disappeared beneath the surface.
I let us sink for a few seconds, then opened my eyes and let my shadows out.
She was staring at me wide-eyed, watching my shadows.
They almost glowed in the water.
So she let hers out.
They glowed too, entwining with mine.
It was hot as hell. The way her shadows moved with mine, the way hers caressed mine, teased them, played with them.
The connection burned in my chest and I pulled her forward, kissing her under the water.
The second I did, a warmth that surpassed anything I had felt in the lake before washed through me.
It was intense, desperate, and she deepened the kiss, feeling it just as potently.
Her legs tightened around my waist, her tongue moving with mine.
I had always assumed kissing under the water, making out especially, would have been hard, but I didn’t need oxygen. I needed more of her.
Our shadows danced around us, surrounding us in their glow, their happiness.
Until I pulled back to check on my Spitfire.
The fear in her eyes was gone, replaced by heat.
I smirked. “I told you,” I said in the link.
“It feels like magic…” she whispered back. ~”But lighter.”~
I nodded. “It clears my head when I can’t do it myself.”
She grinned and kissed me again. “Can I share your head-clearing space? I love it,”
she said through the link.
The joy I felt when she finally understood the water, even just a little bit, was overwhelming. But to hear her want to share it with me? It surged through our mating bond, our shadows, and I was on her again. I kissed her as if we weren’t depriving our bodies of the vital oxygen they needed.
“How long can a wolf hold their breath?” she asked when I finally let her go.
“I don’t know. Longer than a human,” I said.
Before she could respond, a hand reached down and yanked her back up. It was Derik. I kicked to the surface, breaking through to see a scowling Derik and a smirking Kai.
“Wow,” I said, looking at Kai. “You didn’t have to tell Dad on us,” I teased.
Derik growled, wiping the water from Lorelai’s face and checking her over, his hand on her chest.
“I’m okay, it was amazing down there,” she smiled.
Shit, now I was hard.
“She was safe, Derik. Don’t stress,” I said, but he growled at me.
“No holding your breath for extended periods of time while pregnant, okay? Not because I don’t trust you or Brax, but because my heart can’t take it,” he admitted quietly to Lorelai.
That made me feel bad. He was stressing so much about being the best father, but he was going to be. He just had to trust himself. He didn’t though, and I was sure Spitfire would have him believing he was a god by the time that kid was born.
But until then, I was happy to lay off.
“Fine, but once that baby is born, we’re fucking here, Spitfire,” I grinned.
Lorelai laughed and splashed me with water.
I raised a brow. Those were actions of war.
I got her back, but Derik moved in front of her. She latched onto his back, using him as a shield as Kai joined in, shoving me under the water.
I grabbed him by the waist, tackling him in, and came up with a grin.
When we finally got out of the lake a while later, we were all smiling. The games were forgotten, but for the first year since they started, I was okay with that.
Because I finally felt like they had done what they were meant to do and connected everyone.
6. The Feast
LORELAI
My catch from The Hunt lay in the middle of the large feasting table, spread out and cooked with celebratory ale all around. The pack was getting drunk, laughing and cheering in happier spirits than I had ever seen them.
The boars were on the table, supporting the main hunt and around it were all kinds of fruit and accompaniments that made my mouth water.
I sipped my water from the goblet I had been given by Derik. He never let anyone else get my drinks. Since finding out I was carrying his heir, he had been having some slight control issues.
He sat close, eating from his plate, sipping his ale as Kai sat on my other side. Brax was next to Kai, both of them eating and celebrating.
The humans had joined and I smiled over at my mom who was sitting with a group of council members.
She was meant for the role of liaison for the humans. For leading them in a different direction than my father had and now that she wasn’t overshadowed by him, every single one of them seemed so much happier.
And that was thanks to her.
I smiled wider then looked at our pack. They were happy too.
The sun had been out all day, sinking slowly beyond the horizon of the forest, the vampires had joined dinner as soon as it had.
“Have you ever seen something so–“
“Weird?” Brax offered.
“Dangerous?” Kai gritted–he still wasn’t entirely comfortable with the vampires being near him. Some of them had been the very vamps that had held us for torture. We knew that they couldn’t help it, that Silas had a grip on their minds and it was different now, but Kai was still wary.
