After hesitating and dilly–dallying for a moment, he carefully said, “Mr.Jones, I’ve already sent people to check on this. I believe we’ll have an outcome soon.”
“How soon is soon?” the man asked in a slow and deep voice that would make one shudder.
Eddie trembled with a feeling of dismay, thinking that he was definitely going to get criticized for his inefficiency.
Just as he was about to speak to make up for it, David suddenly stood up and said, “The meeting shall end here.”
After saying that, he strode away and left the conference room. His legs were long and slender.
Eddie frantically packed up the things on the table and chased after David. At the same time, he called his friend and urged him to speed up the investigation.
By the time he reached the office, he had received the information. After skimming through the content quickly, Eddie’s gaze became complicated.
The moment he entered the office, he didn’t dare to delay and hurriedly handed his mobile phone to David. “Mr. Jones, please take a look.”
While looking through the information, David’s stern face eased a little, and his menacing aura faded too.
There even seemed to be a faint smile on his lips. He muttered softly, “So it’s the Johnson family…”
“Mr. Jones, do we continue investigating further?”
After that experience just now, Eddie didn’t dare to relax when it came to Rachel.
In fact, he even secretly made up his mind to inform David immediately whenever there was new information about Rachel.
Eddie stood still for a long time, but David still had not reacted.
Eddie looked over in puzzlement, only to see clearly David’s every move in the reflection of the floor–to–ceiling glass window, which seemed to be a mirror.
The man had his back facing Eddie and was sending a text message with his head hung low. Eddie couldn’t help but smirk.
Since he got Rachel’s number, David had never chatted with her properly. The last message in their chat was of Rachel suggesting they visit Old Mrs. Jones.
David tapped his long and slender fingers against the keyboard. [What are you doing?]
Before sending it, he hesitated and decided not to do so as he thought that he might be prying into her privacy by asking that.
He frowned and quickly edited the text message. He retyped, [Have you eaten?]
However, he thought it wasn’t a good idea either because it sounded corny and insincere.
After editing the message for a long time, David eventually sent a rose emoji without any words.
At that moment, Rachel had already arrived at the Johnson family residence.
The Johnson family’s residence was located in the heart of the city of Seaxas, where land was incredibly expensive. To its left was a street lined with glorious and opulent hotels. To its right was the Oaks, an upscale, European–royal–style residential district that was home to the wealthy and top elites.
Yet such an existence could not even hold a candle to the Johnson family’s residence.
The Johnson family’s residence was like the leader of the wealthy district, symbolizing the irreplaceable position of the Johnson family in Seaxas.
The gates of the manor were slowly pulled open, and Adrian drove in before pulling over by the road.
Rachel exhaled lightly and opened the door to get out of the car.
At that moment, the butler, Mr. Chadwick was directing the gardener to trim the lawn. When he noticed Rachel, he froze and stood rooted to the ground. “Miss… Miss Grey?”
He widened his eyes in disbelief, fearing that his eyes had been playing tricks on him.
Adrian finally walked over and teased, “Mr. Chadwick, did you realize that Rae–Rae has gotten prettier since the last time you saw her three years ago?”
Only then did Mr. Chadwick realize that his eyes hadn’t been playing tricks on him. No longer as stern as he usually was, he grinned widely and quickly strode forward to welcome her. “Miss Grey, you’re really back.”
Rachel smiled. Her mannerisms were gracious. “It’s been a long while. I’m back.”
Mr. Chadwick nodded gleefully and said with tears in his eyes, “Good that you’re back. Good that you’re back…”
Back then, Rachel had gone all out and turned against Old Mr. Johnson for the sake of pursuing her so–called true love. She even severed all ties with him. In the past three years, Old Mr. Johnson would often sigh while staring at photos of her.
Everyone looked forward to the day that Rachel would return, and now the day had finally come.
While leading Rachel in, Mr. Chadwick reported loudly, “Sir, Miss Grey is back.”
As soon as he finished speaking, someone in the living room hollered, pretending to be angry, “What’s the big deal? Tell her to leave! Since she was ruthless enough to turn her back on me and abandon me back then, I’ve disowned this unfilial granddaughter of mine!”
Hearing the robust voice that was complaining, Mr. Chadwick pursed his lips and said to Rachel, “Miss Grey, sir has a bark that’s worse than his bite. Don’t take his words to heart. After you left, he would sit in your bedroom every night and instruct the servants to make sure your room remained spick and span every day.”
Rachel grinned and said, “Got it.”
The person seated there was the one who loved her the most in this world. He couldn’t bear to let her suffer in the slightest. He doted on her so dearly that he wished he could give her all the best things in the world. Of course, she wouldn’t take his harsh words seriously.
Adrian grabbed Rachel’s wrist from the side and gestured for her not to be too quick to enter.
Rachel stared at him in puzzlement, only to see Adrian raising his brows and seemingly trying to tell her, “Watch me.”
Immediately afterward, he yelled loudly, “Rae–Rae, sir is still mad at you. You should drop by again another day lest you incur his wrath.”
As soon as he said that, they heard the dull thuds of a walking stick being knocked against the ground.
Indeed, Old Mr. Jones had come out on his own.
Arthur Johnson, head of the Johnson family, was advanced in years, and his hair had turned white. However, he was still full of energy and vigor. His face might have been covered in wrinkles, but his eyes were still sharp. He exuded a vague tinge of shrewdness from his younger days.
Arthur deliberately sulked and humphed coldly. “I’ll break the legs of anyone who dares to leave today.“
Adrian and Rachel made eye contact and smiled before teasing, “We don’t want to leave, either, but we can’t help that the head of the family doesn’t want to see us.”
“Brat, stop babbling nonsense!” Arthur snapped as he raised his cane furiously in an attempt to hit Adrian with it.
Rachel quickly stepped forward, reached her arm out, and held the cane that Arthur had raised in his hand. “Grandpa, it’s my fault. Simmer down.”
“I thought you had long forgotten about this family after living out there on your own for three years!” Arthur exclaimed as he raised his head slightly and sighed, holding his tears back with all his might.
Hearing his words, Rachel’s teardrops rolled down her cheeks uncontrollably.
Back then, Arthur was dead against her decision to marry Louis because he thought he was unreliable and their families were incompatible.
However, at that time, Rachel strongly believed love could overcome all odds. In the end, the facts proved that her determination was ridiculous. It really wasn’t worth it to give her family up for the sake of a man who did not love her.
Rachel sniffled and suppressed her sobs. “Grandpa, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have disobeyed you back then.”
