“I… Why should I apologize to her?” Vanessa’s face reddened with fury.
“Because you like me, and Ms. Burton doesn’t. So Ms. Burton can’t possibly look for trouble with you,” Landon replied.
Alyssa arched her brows. “He’s quite smart, much better than Jeremy,” she thought.
“How can you do this to me, Mr. Harper? I’m your girlfriend!”
Vanessa rushed over to Landon in tears and wanted to hug him. However, Landon took a step back in disdain, causing her to almost lose her balance.
“Girlfriend? Who said so?” Landon shot Vanessa a frosty gaze, sending a shiver down her spine. “Quickly apologize to Ms. Burton and buzz off. Don’t ever let me see you again.”
would seem like doomsday was approaching.

“I–I’m sorry!” Vanessa squeezed out the words through gritted teeth. Then, she fled the scene while covering her face in shame.
“I’m sorry to have caused you inconvenience, Ms. Burton,” Landon said, returning to his previous demeanor.
“You’ve made her apologize to me. It’s settled.” Alyssa spared a glance at her watch and stood up from her seat. “It’s time for me to get back to work. Take care, Mr. Harper.”
Landon was a watch collector. He immediately noticed Alyssa was wearing a global limited edition of Richard Mille!
“Looks like Jonah treats her well. I don’t think I’ll be willing to give this to her,” he thought.
He felt that Alyssa was simply an ignorant country bumpkin for wearing such a luxurious watch for laborious work.
“What time are you getting off work today, Ms. Burton? I’ll pick you up at night,” Landon said, catching up with her.
“Give it up. It’s not going to happen,” Alyssa said firmly. “I won’t eat with you.”
Landon clucked his tongue. “Why so harsh? Remember how I helped you teach Dylan a lesson? Think of this meal as thanks for that. Can’t you do that?”
Alyssa smiled mockingly. “As far as I’m aware, Jeremy’s the one who helped me out. It’s inappropriate for you to take credit for something your best bud did.”
“Have I done anything to offend you, Ms. Burton? Why can’t you give me a chance?”
Landon looked her in the eye. “Is it because you already have Jonah? Does he have the guts to tell the world you’re his girlfriend? Because I do!”
“Mr. Harper, it doesn’t matter who came first or last when it comes to relationships. But having shame and morals does.” Alyssa’s simple sentence was enough to make Landon pale. “I may not have the best upbringing, but I do know what shame is.”
“When I married Jeremy, my heart belonged to him and only him. Now that Jonah’s my boyfriend, he’s all I can see. I don’t mind if my relationship isn’t the best, but I hate it when people try to ruin it. I’d advise you to keep your nose out of my business, Mr. Harper.
Please don’t disturb my life anymore.” Only the heavens knew how bitter Alyssa felt when she said this.
Even Landon could tell she was trying hard to suppress her anger and heartache. His gaze deepened for a second. Alyssa breathed deeply and put her guard up again. Then, she turned to leave with her head held high and came to an abrupt stop.
…
“Jeremy?” Landon’s eyes widened. How had he gotten there so quickly? Had he taken a rocket or something?
Jeremy stood at the entrance of the restaurant with his back straight. He oozed iciness. The restaurant’s A/C was turned up at full blast. But Jeremy’s presence made it become an ice cellar.
Alyssa met his burning gaze. She had to say that his eyes were beautiful and bright. Once upon a time, they’d bewitched her and put her under a spell. But those same eyes had only looked at her with iciness.
Jeremy had never smiled at her, let alone given her loving looks. She’d been obsessed with the idea of melting a heart of stone. The tears she’d shed and the effort she’d expended had moved no one but herself.
Jeremy approached her with narrowed eyes. He’d turned down his afternoon appointment when he’d heard about Allison and Landon being together. Then, he’d sped over to the restaurant. Upon his arrival, he heard what she said to Landon about Jonah.
He felt an inexplicable emptiness in his chest at her words. This made him mad. He’d never been the type to throw a tantrum, but Allison always made him lose control! He looked her in the eye. “What are you doing here?”
“Work.” She turned away.
“Is there something wrong with your memory? I told you we’re still husband and wife as long as the divorce isn’t finalized. You’re still a member of the Walsh family. You know very well Walsh Group and Taylor Group are competitors.
“Yet, you’ve chosen to work at one of Taylor Group’s hotels. What the hell were you thinking? Are you trying to piss me off? Or disgust me?
Or humiliate me?” The veins in Jeremy’s forehead throbbed.
Landon suddenly felt anxious. He was about to appease them both when Alyssa said, “So that’s what you think.” She gave him a frosty look. “If that’s the case, let’s get it over and done with today. Then, you’ll stop haunting me and showing your ugly mug around me.”
“Allison Burton!” Jeremy scowled.
“What, you don’t have everything you need with you? Have Xavier deliver them to you. I carry my things with me at all times. After all, I pray every day that they’ll be put to good use.” Alyssa smiled disdainfully. She didn’t look like she would miss Jeremy at all.
Jeremy immediately saw red. He grabbed her arm forcefully. It was almost as if he were afraid he wouldn’t be able to catch her once she fled. Unfortunately, in the next second…
“Ouch!” A sharp pain jolted through Alyssa’s arm. Sweat beaded on her forehead. Jeremy stiffened, and his heart raced. He’d dislocated her arm!

“F**k! Have you lost your fucking mind, Jeremy?” Landon’s eyes bulged.
Alyssa looked ashen. Her arm fell to her side limply, and cold sweat beaded over her forehead. He and Jeremy were exact opposites–he treated women gently while Jeremy was too harsh with them!
Jeremy clenched the hand that had grabbed Alyssa’s arm. His lips parted as he stepped back, looking stunned.
“Ms. Burton, your arm’s dislocated! I’ll take you to the hospital right now!” Landon said anxiously. He moved to help her, but she dodged him. “No, thanks. I’ll deal with this myself.”
“How are you going to do that? You have a dislocated arm!”
“It’s none of your business!” Alyssa was genuinely angry now. She glared at him, her hackles raised. Landon was stunned. He didn’t dare move.
Jeremy stared at her. She was his ex–wife, but he felt like he’d never really known her.
Throughout the three years of their marriage, he’d only seen her smile and laugh. She’d always been gentle, obedient, and even a little ingratiating.
Back then, he was disappointed and resentful because of the forced marriage. The more she smiled at him, the angrier he felt. Toward the end, he felt hatred for her.
Now that they had separated, that smiling face had disappeared from his life. But why did he find her so much more alive and spirited when she treated him with anger and resentment?
“Jeremy, stop thinking so highly of yourself…” Alyssa gasped with pain. Her eyes were red.
“I didn’t get a job because I wanted to humiliate you or anything. I only wanted to find a way out after you inevitably abandoned me.
“I don’t know why you keep stopping me from moving on. Didn’t you turn and move on with someone else after ending our marriage? Are you still hung up on me? No, that can’t be. You don’t have the heart for that. You just don’t want to see me doing well.”
Jeremy felt like something was smothering him. He couldn’t say a word. His silence made Alyssa’s heart sink.
She smiled mockingly. “Are you waiting to see me down in the dumps without you? That’s not going to happen anymore. I’ve lived like that for the past three years, and I’ve had enough. Leaving you isn’t a continuation of my tragic life. It’s a release. Leave me alone from now until Grandpa’s birthday. I don’t want to see you anymore.”
Alyssa turned away. The pain coming from her arm was nothing compared to the pain in her heart. She was already numb from it.
The dislocated arm wasn’t an issue. She could just fix it before their very eyes. She didn’t want to do anything about it, though. Alyssa wanted to stay in this messy state and put herself through as much pain as possible. Then, she could reach a state of release.
