Lucien raised his brows and bowed his head. “We appreciate it,” he said deeply.
Then Lucien led us out and back to the room we had been in before.
We sat down, and Lucien brought over a blade and gold, both decorated in copper and jewels.
Brax snarled. “That is a sacrificial dagger. It will not touch a wolf with any intent other than to harm,” he stood up.
Lucien shook his head. “I know, apologies, I should have explained the steps. This blade is for Pearl. It will take her blood as a sacrifice so the realm has a balance. We offer our protection oath in blood for the humans,” he explained.
Brax raised a brow at Galen who nodded.
“They have been using it the whole time. I read up on the blade in the library archives; it is sacrificial but means no harm. Only balance,” Galen said. Brax sat back down.
It was hot that he was so quick to stand up for us and my mom. There was no way we would get out of here alive if we were to be attacked, but he knew that and the fact he was still willing to challenge the vamps for us had the mated part of me very attracted.
Brax gave me a smirk then pulled my chin over so he could press his lips to mine.
“If you are threatened, Spitfire, I will not hesitate,” he promised. I kissed him again.
“Likewise,” I said back.
Lucien brought over a simple blade then with a black handle and a silver hilt.
“Silver?”
“The only blades we have, sorry,” Lucien blushed.
Brax shook his head at the knife and bit into his wrist with his canines then leaked the blood into the bowl at the same time as Galen and Mom.
It felt wrong not to offer my own while they did but Lucien was right. My blood was already doing another job.
I rubbed my stomach softly then watched as Lucien picked up the bowl with our blood in it. He handed it to one of the vampires at the door. She had long silver hair that was tied into a severe bun at the back of her head. Her expression was pained as she rushed over to accept it.
“Take this to the keepers of the young, tell them to give them some now and some tomorrow. After that, our supply will continue,” Lucien said.
The woman nodded quickly and turned to us. “Thank you. Thank you so much,” she said before rushing from the room.
Lucien waited until she had left before heading over to the fire, leaning his arm on the mantle and looking at the fire.
“Her son is one of the young. He has been there the longest. His link to the collective came in when he was only a youngin. Thirteen, I recall. He has been there for five years this winter passed. For some reason, his mind will not assimilate and we are worried Silas did too much, like he did for Evelyn,” Lucien shook his head.
“What did he do to her?” I whispered.
Lucien shook his head again. “It is not a story I can tell, I’m afraid. It is hers to share when and if she chooses. I can tell you that we are grateful and will help you with protection in return. I have prepared some of my vampires to go back with you,” he said.
“Lorelai and I will be heading back to the city,” Brax announced.
“I assumed. I have three to go back with Galen and Pearl. Three for you. They will watch your backs and have been given a drop of your blood each in case you run into trouble.”
We said our thanks to Lucien, said our goodbyes, then were led out of the castle, across the black water and the marshlands before we hit the forest again.
“Be safe,” I said to Mom. She nodded and held my face.
“You too, Sweetheart,” she kissed my cheek.
I smiled, then she climbed on Galen who had shifted as soon as we had gone to the marshlands.
The vamps hung back and watched the forest as Brax shifted and I climbed on him.
I was starving, and I rubbed my stomach as it grumbled.
Home to my mates, my twins, and some food. That was my plan.
It was still my plan by the time we had made the uneventful trip to the city. We went inside the gates, and the vampires went to follow but were stopped by the wolves growling.
“Thanks for your help, we are okay now,” I said, but one of the vampires shook his head.
“Lucien said if you would like, we can stay here so our hive mind can keep you connected to the humans and the vampires while your links aren’t working,” he explained.
But the wolves were not agreeable. I could feel that without even asking.
The link was better, their emotions filtering in me even if I couldn’t hear them.
“It’s okay, thank you though, the link will be better over the next day or two,” I said.
The vampires looked at each other then nodded. “We will remain close,” they said, then left back into the forest without waiting to see what we thought of that.
I didn’t mind.
I had just spun to greet the wolves that I hadn’t seen since I had left when there was a roar. Kai came bounding in the gate in wolf form. He eyed me then ran at Brax. They fought, their wolves fighting and biting, smashing into the path and buildings.
I shook my head at Kai’s theatrics.
A hello would have sufficed.
“Savage,” Derik said, walking over to me, pulling me into him with a smile before kissing the top of my head.
I grinned back and held him tight.
“Sorry we were gone so long, we had some issues,” I said.
He nodded. “Evelyn stopped by and let us know you were with the vampires and would be home soon. Lucien sent her as soon as he learned our links weren’t working,” Derik explained.
“That was good of him,” I said against Derik.
“I assume it was with good intentions. But his mistake was thinking Kai was reasonable when it came to you being around the vampires,” Derik huffed.
“What happened?”
“Kai got put on his ass by an impressive vampire woman and a group of vampire warriors which made him feral. He’s been running ever since. If you hadn’t arrived when you had, I daresay he would’ve hunted you down,” Derik said then pulled my chin so I had to look at him.
“And I would have let him, Beautiful. Do you have any idea how worried I have been?” He said before kissing me harshly.
I couldn’t respond to his question because the taste of him was already taking me over.
I had missed him. Them.
As much as outside the city was where I was needed then, I liked being home.
I kissed him back, running my fingers up his chest and around his shoulders. He pushed his tongue against mine, and I sighed into him.
My body warmed, and he held me close to him.
Derik held my face with his other hand he didn’t have on my waist and deepened the kiss with long strokes of his tongue against mine.
I was desperate for more already, and I had only been back a few seconds.
“Derik!” Kai called.
Derik grinned and pulled away. “Raincheck, Beautiful, the savage called dibs. Apparently that is a binding contract,”
he smirked, handing me over to Kai who hauled me into his arms and his shamelessly naked body.
His mouth crashed down on mine, stealing my next breath.
His kiss was as savage as he was.
In the back of my mind, I could hear Brax explaining what had happened to Derik, but I had no idea what Derik’s response was because Kai was smothering my senses with everything that was him.
His taste, his touch, his scent. It drowned me.
I was lost to it, in the safe world he created for me.
I kissed him back, making sure every part of my body was pressed against him. He growled under his breath and kissed me harder.
