“I guess you won this round, wolves, well done,” she smiled maliciously.
Kai went to go for her but four wolves flanked her on each side, coming out of the forest.
I hadn’t sensed her or them.
Neither had my Alphas if the raised brows on their faces was anything to go by.
I looked over the wolves but they looked normal. Aside from the fact that they were meant to be rogues and apparently had formed some kind of pack that meant they didn’t mind following a leader.
Her black leather gloves finished clapping together and she petted the wolf to her left.
Kai stood in front of me, growling through his blood-stained muzzle. Brax’s shadows leaked out of him, his clenched fists telling me how close he was to using them. Derik held his arm across my body, keeping me slightly behind him.
But I wasn’t afraid of Heather.
She couldn’t be sensed, neither could her wolves if she chose it so which meant she could have attacked us and the city long ago. But she hadn’t.
Which meant she was either playing a game we had a chance of winning or she was waiting for the right moment and it hadn’t come yet.
Either way, she was not about to attack, that much I read on her face.
“You have the vampires protecting your humans. A spell protecting the lake. Magic protecting the city. How much more protection do you have left I wonder?” She grinned then nodded to her rogues who all retreated.
She went last, leaving us with her parting words, “I guess we shall see, won’t we?”
“You will not,” I called after her and pushed past my Alphas who were not on board with that at all.
She raised a brow at me, “Oh? You think this is all we have planned for you? Cute, Luna. If only you knew,” she grinned.
But I was not letting her have the last word. Not when she was threatening everything important to me.
“I don’t need to. I know we will beat you. What you want to achieve cannot be done. The loyalty of the creatures in this realm is to the realm. You are fighting more than us and that is a war you cannot win,” I said firmly.
Her smile lifted higher, “I do not want to achieve power over the realm, naive Luna. I want to end the wolves. That is all. I want the pack you cherish so much to pay for everything it has done to become what it is and I will get my revenge. You will see, I promise you,” Heather said, her words turning sour at the end as her lip lifted in a snarl.
I shook my head, “No. You will see.”
Then I spun from her, turning my back on her before she could, showing her the trust in my pack that was there, the trust she wished she had.
My pack followed as she huffed and left. Good riddance.
We got back to the city and the pack dispersed to the infirmary, to their homes, to the tavern.
I went straight to the mansion. I climbed the steps with trudging feet before Derik chuckled and picked me up, carrying me up the rest, moving at a much faster pace than I had been.
I snuggled into him, curling my arms around him.
I had enough time to see the twins and I spent the next hour bathing, feeding, and putting them down for a sleep before collapsing on the bed we shared.
Since Kai had broken the last one, he had put together a bigger, stronger one for us. It took up more room in the suite but it meant we all fit better.
Kai swears he had no help but Brax already dobbed him in. Derik had built most of it, letting Kai take the credit.
Derik was too much of a control freak to let Kai mess up the measurements after the fifth remeasure according to Brax.
I smiled as I remembered, closing my eyes as the comfort of bed had me already slipping from consciousness.
