I knew it was my own fault, but I couldn’t risk not being able to protect my mate and children. They had gone through so much, and they shouldn’t have.
They were my responsibility. I would do better by them.
I winced as my shadows moved even harsher against me. My knees buckled, and I crashed to the stone floor, my breaths harsh as my head throbbed.
My nose bled again, and I swiped it away with my hand.
“Fucking hell,” I growled, then tried to reach for a cloth when there was a familiar scent around me. A perfume I recognized but hadn’t sensed in a long time.
Grapes. A sweet taste that I remembered well but no longer held the same fondness for.
Danika bent down with a cloth, holding it out for me.
I warily took it, nodding in thanks as she knelt.
Her long blonde hair ran down over her full dress. It was a sapphire blue with a low-cut, square neckline that had her breasts pushing out of it.
I got to my feet and stepped back, her small frame too close to mine for comfort.
She smiled timidly at me.
“Are you okay?” she asked, her voice soft.
I nodded, clearing the blood from under my nose, “Yeah. Thanks.”
I chucked the cloth in the waste basket then put my cup in the sink. When I turned, she was still there.
Even closer this time.
“Is something wrong? You don’t normally get nosebleeds.”
And she was too observant so I was not going to answer. I had no reason to be wary of her, she had accepted my rejection and we hadn’t spoken since.
But my shadows weren’t grating on my skin anymore, they were moving fluidly to my head to ring the alarm bells in it.
I frowned and looked over her, “What are you doing down here dressed like that?” I questioned.
It was the middle of the night. She shouldn’t be anywhere near the mansion. She wasn’t on protective duty. I had put her on patrol and the wineries on purpose– they were far away from my mate.
She shrugged and looked down at her dress with a coy smile, her cheeks pinkening, “Do you like it? You used to love this color,” she gave me a small twirl.
I used to. I still did. On Lorelai. Which is why she wore my pendant around her neck.
“Danika–“
“I miss you, Brax,” she said suddenly, stepping closer. I went to step back but she had me backed against the counter.
Her eyes wavered with tears and my heart gave a jerk.
I was mated but I hadn’t meant to be an asshole to her. Nobody could have predicted what Lorelai would mean to us.
But I had been hers since the blood moon. Danika needed to understand that.
“You’re crossing a line,” I growled, moving away from her. I went to walk out but she grabbed my wrist.
When she did, my shadows hissed.
I yanked my hand back and she looked heartbroken. But my shadows were as loyal as I was to Lorelai.
Danika would understand when she mated. If she mated.
“You crossed a line when you asked me to marry you then shacked up with the winterborn,” Danika cried, tears falling down her cheeks.
I grimaced. That had been a dick move. Unintentional but still, I understood I had hurt her.
I huffed and looked down before looking back at her. She was still crying and I hated it.
“I’m sorry Danika, I am, but fate has chosen my mate for me. I cannot and would not change it,” I said, hoping she could hear how bad I felt.
It made her cry more.
“Do you even understand what your rejection has done to me? My parents are on the council, I was respected, loved, adored as a future Luna. Now what am I? Outcasted, pushed out of the pack like last week’s trash. You don’t acknowledge my existence anymore.” Her tears were sobs now, and my stomach turned.
My shadows and I both knew this was going in a bad direction, but I couldn’t just leave her crying there.
“It is not intentional. You are a part of the pack. You will always be important to us as a collective, a part of the family, Danika. Just not as mine,” I said.
“How could you forget so easily?” She whispered, her tears dropping from her face. She tugged at the shoulders of her dress, pulling them down, “How could you forget what I felt like? How we fucked like we were mates? How much you loved my mouth around your cock?” Danika said in her lowered soft voice, pulling her dress all the way off and stepping forward.
I stumbled back, moving away, but she came in faster.
She ran her fingers down my naked torso, her body only covered in her undergarments and corset.
But it was too far, and I knew I had to hurt her again.
I gripped her wrists tight and stopped her from touching me, holding her back from pushing her body up against me.
My shadows moved between us and solidified, keeping a wall there.
“I forgot the second I tasted my mate, Danika. Remember that or the next time you touch me will be the last time you take a free breath,” I warned, my voice low and threatening.
Danika looked like I had slapped her. I hadn’t, but I was guessing she would have preferred if I had.
She sobbed, yanked her hands free, and grabbed her dress. She went to the door and with her hand on the handle, she looked over her shoulder, “You will know what this feels like one day Braxton, and I hope I am there to witness it.” She slammed the door behind her.
I blew out a relieved breath, turning to leave the kitchen, more thankful that Lorelai hadn’t come down and–
I turned to see Lorelai in the door frame, her arms folded across her chest, wearing my shirt.
My heart jumped, panic seizing me that she had gotten the wrong idea, but she didn’t seem homicidal. Instead, she was smirking, leaning against the frame in a casually, hot as hell way.
“Having fun threatening the exes tonight are we?” She raised a brow at me.
I ran a hand through my shaggy hair and eyed her warily. Was this a trap?
“She needed to be put in her place. I didn’t mean to be so harsh, but she wasn’t getting the message,” I shrugged, rubbing the back of my neck.
Her smirk got wider and she moved closer, her hair wild from earlier in bed.
“I could see that. Do you think she got the message that time?” Lorelai asked calmly, going past me to sit on the counter, lifting herself up.
“I think so,” I said, still not sure if I was being herded into a trap that got me in trouble yet.
Lorelai laughed and held her hands out to me. I went to her and stepped between her legs. She kissed me softly.
“Good,” she said, pulling back, “because if she tries that shit again, I will turn my crazy pregnant bitch switch on and nobody deserves that,” she grinned.
I grinned and kissed her.
“No, they don’t. Sorry, you saw that.”
“I’m not. It’s hot when you make sure others know I am the only one you want,” she smirked, running her fingers down my bare chest. I raised a brow at her and her fingers went lower to my waistband.
I leaned in and kissed her again, this time deeper, sliding my tongue along hers.
The instant her taste hit me, I forgot all about Danika.
Lorelai kissed me, tasting me right back, her hand going inside my pants to stroke my thickening cock.
I shuddered at her touch, deepening the kiss, lifting her leg against my waist.
She pumped me in her grasp as I groaned, holding the back of her head.
Then she shoved me back and jumped off the counter.
