When she turned the corner, she saw Adrian unexpectedly.
At the sight of Adrian, Ciara’s eyes widened. “What are you doing here?”
Adrian held up an invitation. “I was invited, of course. Is that so strange?”
It was strange. He hadn’t been to an event like this in a long time. But she kept these thoughts to herself.
Adrian scanned her up and down and returned the question. “What are you doing here? And what’s with the broom?”
Ciara’s heart skipped a beat. Gripping the broom tighter, she replied with another question. “Did you see someone running past just now?”
“No.” Adrian’s response was concise. He turned to Horace and asked, “What about you? See anyone?”
Horace shook his head. “No, me neither.”
“Why, what happened? You’re shivering.” Adrian looked at her more closely, his deep eyes unreadable.
Only then did Ciara realize that she was trembling all over. She loosened her grip and the broom fell to the floor. Seconds later, her knees gave way and she too fell.
She felt a warm embrace as she was covered with a coat. She opened her eyes to see Adrian who had taken off his coat and draped it on her.
“Thank you” Ciara forced a smile, acknowledging his kindness. After all, she was in quite a bad state.
For a moment, Adrian silently studied her face. Then, he asked, “Who are you looking for? What did he do to you?”
“Come with me,” came her response.
Ciara got to her feet and led them to the ladies’ room.
Jett was still splayed out on the floor, unconscious.
Still scared, she stayed as far away from him as possible as she explained what had happened.
Adrian looked at Jett’s injuries. With a raised eyebrow, he asked, “You did this? Looks like a couple of his ribs are broken.”
“No, it wasn’t me. Someone came to my rescue…” Ciara stammered. It was hard to get her mind straight.
“Who was it?” Adrian asked..
Ciara shook her head and avoided his gaze. “I don’t know. I didn’t see his face.”
She felt a little guilty when she thought of that man holding her and touching her.
She lowered her head and missed the mischievous gleam that had appeared in Adrian’s eyes!
“Your safety is the most important thing. You’re still part of the Lewis family. I will make him pay for what he’s done to you, Adrian said. His tone was light.
Ciara recalled what Jett had said. He was from a family with power and influence in the city. He wasn’t afraid of the Lewiss.
She didn’t want to cause any more trouble for Adrian.
Then there was the sound of multiple footsteps thundering down the corridor. Kenny Porter, the building’s owner, rushed in, followed by over a dozen bodyguards.
He began profusely apologizing to Ciara. “I’m so sorry, Ms. Mitchell. We should never have allowed this to happen. I’ve called the police and they will handle this. I am so sorry.”
Ciara was surprised that the boss of this place would be so humble. She sensed a trace of alarm. in his voice.
Normally, businessmen like this were very diplomatic and liked to handle things themselves. They wouldn’t call the police unless they really had to. And usually, they were biased toward wealthy people like Jett. Something felt off.
Maybe Kenny didn’t recognize Jett in his current state.
She hesitated for a moment before reminding him, “You might not have realized, but that’s Jett Gellar. Do you really want to hand him over to the police?”
Kenny wiped the sweat off his brow and stole a glance at Adrian. “That doesn’t matter. Soon he will be a nobody.” He laughed dryly.
With that, he instructed the bodyguards to carry Jett away.
Ciara watched in astonishment. How powerful was this Kenny? She wondered to herself. More powerful than Jett?
“Now that it’s been settled, let’s get out of here,” Adrian declared.
His words brought Ciara back to reality. She nodded and retrieved her purse that was still lying beside the sink.
As she looked up, she noticed a security camera by the door. She called out after Kenny, “Can I have a quick look at your security footage?”
Everyone’s eyes looked to Ciara.
“Someone came in and saved me from Jett, but I didn’t see his face. That camera must have recorded him coming in and leaving,” Ciara explained, pointing at the camera. It was angled to face the door of the restroom. Anyone passing through would be caught.
After taking another glance at Adrian, Kenny smiled. “Of course, Ms. Mitchell. Please, follow me.”
Kenny led everyone to the surveillance room and pulled up the footage.
“It was around eight o’clock when it happened,” Ciara said as she stared at the screen.
Kenny fast-forwarded through the footage of the time she suggested. It didn’t show anything except Ciara going in, followed by Jett, and then Ciara leaving and returning with Adrian.. There was no other man.
Ciara was incredulous. She watched the footage multiple times before she finally said, “That’s impossible. He had to have left through that door. How could he disappear without a trace?”
Kenny paused before saying, “Maybe you were too scared, so…”
“Do you think I hallucinated?” Ciara cut him off, her face serious. That was no hallucination. The person who saved her had to be real. Jett’s current state was proof of that. She could never have done that all on her own.
“Okay, how about this? I’ll get someone to check all our surveillance footage. Just to be sure that we’ve covered everything” Again, Kenny wiped the sweat from his brow. “That will take some time. We have a lot of cameras, after all. But don’t worry, Ms. Mitchell. I’ll have my men talk to the guests who were here tonight. We’ll get to the bottom of this, I can assure you.”
He spoke with such earnest she felt she couldn’t ask anything else from him. She simply sighed and said, “Well, thank you for handling it.”
“My pleasure.” Kenny smiled. He seemed relieved.
Ciara then returned to her dressing room. She got changed and sent Ivan a text explaining that she felt unwell and had to go home.
Adrian kindly offered her a lift back and she accepted.
On the way, Ciara looked out of the window, still in a daze. The events of that evening had really shaken her up.
