“And how’d they see that?” I demanded. She shrunk back, her eyes watering again.
“The witches are powerful, they got in my head. I couldn’t stop them,” she admitted.
But I was not a fool for the tears. “You didn’t try. The witches knew what to promise you, didn’t they?” I raised a brow at her.
The guilt on her face told me what I needed to know.
“They promised that if Brax said no after his mate was dead, they would stop the heartache. They promised it wouldn’t hurt anymore,” she was solemn.
And she was a fucking fool.
A laugh erupted from my mouth and Derik shook his head sadly. He had worked it out too.
“You silly traitor. The witches were going to kill you. Stopping the heartache? It won’t hurt if you are dead.”
She frowned, about to argue when her eyes widened, filling with tears.
“Am I that unwanted?” she whispered.
I was about to say yes but Derik glared at me before the word fell.
“What would you do in our position, Danika? You have betrayed us. You have no future with the rogues.”
She shrugged, “I don’t care anymore. Do what you need to do.”
Ugh. It wasn’t fun when she wanted it.
Now she wanted to be punished. I didn’t want to give her anything she wanted.
Derik was in my head then, ‘What do we do now? They are going to kill her.’
‘I could do it instead?’
‘She’s lonely, heartbroken. She made a bad decision. I’m not sure she deserves death.’
I scoffed, ‘She told them of the tunnels. The rogue that got in came for Lorelai and the twins. You may be okay with that but I am not.’
‘I’m not.’
‘So we deal with her?’
Derik tried to open the link to Brax but lust instantly doused us. I smirked. He was fucking our mate like he had said. I closed it off again, not interrupting as much as I wanted to.
“Please. Don’t kill me. I can help, I have more,” she promised.
“Tell us then,” I bit out.
“Heather is planning on–” Her face went white, paling as she choked on her words.
I frowned and looked at Derik.
“Danika?” he asked.
Her eyes went wide and she tried to talk but she choked instead.
Her tongue was swelling, her face paling. Her body shook as she tried to cough.
Her eyes went bloodshot.
“What the fuck?” I growled, going to her, looking in her mouth but there was nothing in there.
“Are you doing this?” I snarled.
She shook her head, panicking as she choked to death.
“Ryleigh!” Derik called.
She ran into the barn, stopping in her tracks as she saw Danika.
“What did you do?” she asked.
“This isn’t us. I think it’s the witches, but they shouldn’t be able to get through the shackles,” I said, checking they were still fixed.
Cain burst into the barn then, his glare on Danika as she took her last breaths. He ran forward and shoved some black potion down her mouth.
It didn’t save her. It had her slumping in the chair.
Her eyes went white, and she was dead.
I didn’t feel as bad as I probably should’ve about that.
Cain tore off her sleeves then looked through her hair.
“What are you doing?” Derik demanded.
“Looking for a branding mark. The witches one,” he murmured, finding one at the back of her neck.
I looked where he pointed at the scarred skin of a pentagram on the back of her neck.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
“That there was a witch riding her mind. It’s why we couldn’t sense her or get to her in the link. It was telling her what to say, what information to give and what to keep hidden. I’m guessing she went to say the wrong thing,” Cain sighed then grabbed the branding iron.
He pressed it against the scarred skin and branded it with a wolf.
“Wait, so she knew what she was saying? She was still playing us?” I demanded.
Cain shrugged, “Probably. Or the witch was forcing her to. It depends on how she felt about whatever you said to her.
If she started feeling bad or regretted going to the witches, they might have taken over.”
I shook my head. Fucking witches.
“So now what? How do we tell the pack that the rogues have started turning humans into betas? That they are going to fight them?” I asked.
Derik shook his head, “We wait. First, we check the rest of the pack. We need to make sure there is no one else wearing this brand.”
I nodded, heading out to check my warriors first. May the realm help anyone wearing that damn brand because I wouldn’t stop to ask questions this time.
24. The Fight
Lorelai
“Betas? Why?” I asked, sitting with the twins in the nursery, feeding Alaric.
Derik mixed me a tea and brought it over with a piece of cake.
I smiled in thanks, and he sat down next to me.
“Because they are the perfect soldiers,” he admitted.
“Should I take offense to that?” Ryleigh asked, smirking as she sat on the floor, Althea playing with the twins.
“It is not intended that way,” Derik reassured.
“I know, D,” she smiled, then stopped Althea from snatching a toy from Zale.
She squealed, reaching for it.
Zale gave it to her.
Althea giggled, her angry squeal turning to one of happiness.
I grinned at that. Zale and Enzi developed fast, with the speed of a wolf, ones with magic in them. But Althea was human.
