“By the way, how’s Lyse doing in Solana City? She was ruthless in taking out the Gardner Group. But if she doesn’t hold up well, I’m afraid she will bring their wrath upon herself.
“Liam and Axel won’t return, so you two must protect her at all times, understood?”
Winston said plainly, but there was a caring look in his eyes.
“Yes, Dad.”
“Don’t worry, Dad. I’ll kill whoever dares to bully Lyse!”
“Killing isn’t necessary, but you can make them wish they were dead,” Winston said. Then, he sipped his wine.
After dinner, Winston and Jonah left the table first. When Silas was about to leave, he realized his brother had left his phone on the table. Right then, it started vibrating, and he saw Jeremy’s name on the screen. Silas was tipsy.
He scanned his surroundings and coughed softly before answering the phone. “Is anything the matter, Mr. Walsh?”
“I’m looking for Allison,” said Jeremy. His tone made Silas angry.
“What’s your problem, Jeremy? Who gave you the right to make Allison answer your call?”
Jeremy fell silent for a moment before asking, “Are you Jonah?” Silas thought Jeremy had realized something. Yet, he still said, “Mr. Walsh, if you’re drunk, you can call your fiancée to keep you entertained. I don’t have time to waste on you.”
“Jonah, if you want to stand up for Allison, then you should use upstanding methods. Don’t play dirty tricks behind other people’s backs,” said Jeremy icily.
“Hah, Jeremy. You’re the most shameless person I know!” Silas gritted his teeth and said, “I’m sure you know who slandered Allison with dirty tactics first.
“If you want to beg for mercy on behalf of your fiancée and her family, then use the right attitude. Stop being the pot calling the kettle black. You’re so greedy it’s embarrassing.”
Jeremy clenched his fists furiously, He could speak fluently and confidently at countless conferences. Yet, he was being rendered speechless by a senior prosecutor right then.
Silas continued speaking. “But I will tell you straight to your face that I won’t let you guys off the hook even if you get on your knees and beg me. I will make anyone who bullies Allison pay a painful price!” With that, Silas hung up.
Jeremy sat in his study, staring at the dark screen of his phone. Veins bulged on his forehead. He was gripping his phone so hard that it might break.
“Mr. Walsh!” Xavier hurried into the study. When he saw his boss‘ stormy expression, his breath caught in his throat.
“What?” barked Jeremy.
“I’ve run investigations as per your orders. However, I could only uncover a little information on Jonah, the eldest son of Mr. Taylor’s legitimate wife, Vivian Whitaker. As for his other four siblings, their case files are highly classified and can’t be accessed!”
Jeremy stared at Xavier fiercely. Xavier paled. He gulped and said, “Why don’t I ask for a pay cut at the HR department tomorrow Meanwhile, Alyssa had just finished taking a bubble bath. She walked downstairs with a beauty mask on her face. She was looking for some wine to drink.
“Ms. Alyssa, just tell me if you need anything. I’ll get it for you. It’s inconvenient for you to walk around,” said Sean as he hurried over to her worriedly.
Alyssa replied, “It’s okay. I just want to get a bottle of red wine from the cellar. It’s already 9:00 pm. Why are you still in your suit?”
Alyssa looked him up and down and said, “Treat this place like your own home. Don’t be shy. Change into casual clothes when you come back. If you’re like this, I’ll feel like I’m at work 24/7. It makes me anxious.”
There was another reason. Sean would make her think of Jeremy. It was embarrassing to even talk about it.
Jeremy was an extremely abstinent man. When he got back to Seaview Manor, he would coop himself up in the study and seldom come out. Jeremy would only take off his armor–
his suit, and change into dark blue pajamas right before going to bed.
He was elegant and classy, but it was suffocating. However, only Alyssa knew that there was a passionate soul hidden behind his frigid façade.
“Ms. Alyssa? Ms. Alyssa?” Sean said with his head cocked.
“Huh?” Alyssa got her senses back. She felt her cheeks burning, and her eyes were gleaming.
“Your face… is very flushed.”
“Is Is it?” Alyssa touched her face. It felt as warm as toast. She immediately looked away shyly. “Maybe it’s because I’ve had a little to drink.”
“Weren’t you on your way to the cellar? Your face is red before you’ve even had a drop.”
Sean pointed out. He was an elite employee but an amateur when it came to real life. He had no idea that Alyssa was just feeling horny.
“You’re so annoying!” Alyssa rolled her eyes at him and walked off in embarrassment.
Sean was left standing there miserably. He didn’t know how he had offended her. He had no choice but to tag along behind her.
They arrived at the wine cellar. It held nearly a thousand bottles of red wine, all of which were prepared for Alyssa by Jeremy. He knew that she had a hobby of having a drink or two.
Every bottle of wine was expensive, and many of them were limited editions bought at auctions.
Alyssa owned more than twenty bottles of some wines that even Winston didn’t have. If she were to sell them, she could afford two villas in Solana City.
Alyssa scanned the racks and chose a bottle of Romani Conti. She tiptoed to take it, but she still couldn’t reach it.
Sean walked behind her, and his shadow loomed over her. Then, he took the bottle of wine for her effortlessly. They were standing so close that he could smell the sweet scent of her hair. His heart started thumping wildly, and he blushed. “Here, Ms. Alyssa.”
“Tut tut, how nice to have a secretary who’s six feet tall. I don’t even have to buy a ladder.” However, her ideal man was taller than six feet- someone like Jeremy. Anyone shorter than him wasn’t her cup of tea.
She scolded herself for thinking of him again. The thought of him made her feel tipsier than wine.
“Ms. Alyssa, I’ll help you open it. It’s difficult for you to do it with one hand Without a word, Alyssa smashed her cast against the edge of a table, and her arm came free. “It’s so clunky. I already wanted to break it long ago,” she said. Sean was dumbfounded.
“Back then, during the war, breaking an arm or dislocating a joint was just a small matter.
I’ve witnessed people getting their legs blasted off. A comrade I had just been joking with in the afternoon would be brought back with countless bullets in him and half his face gone in the evening.”
Alyssa calmly told Sean about the brutality of war with the expression of a person who had been through life and death. Sean was shocked and could not imagine how a privileged and sheltered woman like her had made it through those times.
Once they had let the wine breathe, messages started popping up in the Secret Society group chat.
Axel: “Silas, I’m busy, so I haven’t had the time to understand how a person in the judicial department like you can also be so unbothered about everything. Did you know Jeremy asked someone to hack into our case files secretly? Thank goodness I reacted quickly. I’ve upgraded the security to grade S. That idiot is no match for me.”
Alyssa’s eyes widened in shock.
Silas: “F***! Does he suspect something?”
Axel: “Hey, why are you swearing at me? Show some respect!”
Silas: “F*** you!”
Axel: “You wanna fight? You couldn’t win even if I had my hands tied behind my back.”
Alyssa: “That’s enough! You guys are so childish. Jeremy must have investigated us because he suspects Silas‘ identity. You showed up twice to protect me, so I think he realized you aren’t Jonah. If that’s the case, then you guys don’t have to hide anymore. If he wants an answer, I’ll give him an answer!”
The moment she spoke up, her older brothers immediately stopped fooling around.
Alyssa’s gaze darkened as she swirled the red wine in her glass.
