A beta was only a shield in war. And I was guessing Heather knew that.
We left the mansion and were standing on the stone steps when the realm shuddered. The sky grew darker and lightning cracked across the sky.
Well, if that wasn’t an omen I didn’t know what was. Rain poured down over us and I looked ahead blankly at the empty city.
Sorrow filled me for the summer we were meant to have had. For the sun, for the laughter, the joy that had been there before the rogues had taken it from us. And we deserved it after the winter we had endured.
We had paid our dues to the realm by far. Had they? They hadn’t fought for anything but themselves, and they were still doing that.
Even the witches were fighting for themselves. For a power that didn’t belong to them.
Derik grabbed one hand, Kai the other as we moved down the steps of the mansion, the rain drenching us. Brax stepped ahead of us but his shadows hovered, turning with mine as we walked.
Cain and Beenie flanked us, just as silent. A death march. That’s what it felt like.
The sky cracked again and a roll of thunder echoed through the city. We walked through the stone buildings, along the path, the torches lining it, going out in the rain.
We went to the front gates standing in front of my magic border that was a wavering purple. It had ribbons of glowing purple through it, pulsing in time with my heartbeat.
My shadows wound with Brax’s, strengthening together. But Brax’s were definitely stronger. Whatever he had been doing to train them had worked.
I looked up at the skies, the moon darkened by cloud at its peak. Midnight. It was time.
On cue, Heather came up to the magic border, smirking. She wore a sword. She had a quiver on her back. She had vials strapped to her.
So did our wolves. May the best magic win.
She eyed Brax, her eyes darkening. “Braxton, I assume this means you have decided not to hand yourself over for the sake of your pack?” Heather taunted.
Brax growled but we had a plan. Only Derik was allowed to talk.
Derik stepped up next to Brax who was shaking, anger twisting his shadows into dangerous flicks. “We do not bargain with rogues. We do not answer to them,” Derik warned.
She smirked, “Pity. My brother would have. But he’s not here to do that is he? Because the Trux family thought theirs was above mine. That pride will cost all of you,” Heather snarled.
“This war does not have to happen, Heather. The witches are using your vengeance against you, just as you used Danika,” he reasoned. He was good at that. His voice was strong, calm, and got in your head.
It got in Heather’s in that moment. It was slight but she hesitated.
Then she narrowed her eyes and smirked, “The clever Alpha. I was warned about your mind games. Just as I was warned of The savage Alpha–” her eyes went to Kai then to Brax– “And the one with the shadows.”
“And you have chosen to ignore those warnings?” Derik asked.
Heather shook her head, “No, Derik Achlis. I have decided I don’t need to worry about them because we will win anyway,” she smirked then nodded to her left.
A second later arrows were flying over the border at us. I was ready for it though and shoved my magic up higher, the arrows snapping on the purple, rebounding back.
“Again!” She screamed in the rain.
“Get ready, wolves!” Derik called out.
I steadied myself and strengthened my magic. It was warm and easy in my body, letting me use it. Like it was trying to make up for its mistake.
I thought I would have issues using it but I didn’t. I needed it to protect us and that was the only instinct that thrummed between us.
More arrows broke on the border and I was content to hold the border for longer, prolonging the inevitable. But then my head ached, my stomach burning.
My magic started melting down from where the next arrows landed. I cried out and glared up at Heather.
“One of the many tricks we have up our sleeves werewolves. So go, run while you can, we will catch you and we love hunting,” Heather taunted. “After all, we’ve had to do it for years without a pack,” she grinned, looking up to where the border was slowly dripping away in the rain.
I panted as it ached, the magic drawing back into me sluggish and wounded. Fucking backstabbing witches.
I backed up with my Alphas. “The border is coming down,” I breathed.
“Good. I want a taste of rogue,” Kai snarled.
Derik started peeling his clothes off. He dropped his vest on the ground, his body shaking even more than Brax’s had been.
“D?” Brax asked, his shadows going over to Derik.
Derik turned to me, his eyes glowing. “Stay safe, Beautiful,” he said, his soft voice turning to a growl a second before he let out a roar so loud it beat the thunder in my ears.
Kai grinned, “It’s been a while since Derik has really come out to play.”
I looked at Brax who was smirking too as we slowly backed up from the gates. Derik shook, dropping to his hands and knees, his spine arching as he grew. And grew.
“Don’t judge him on this, Spitfire. He gets a little self-conscious about letting his inner Kai out,” Brax said a second before Derik broke fully into his wolf.
He was bigger than I had ever seen him. His muzzle was pulled into a feral growl, his teeth gnashing, spit falling out as he scraped his nails along the cobblestone.
He let out another deafening roar and Kai grinned, shedding his clothes. “I’ll take that as my cue,” he said, “Stay with Brax, Little Luna. And Cain. Use your shadows and magic. Don’t die,” he ordered before shifting a lot faster than Derik.
Brax pulled me back, “Out of the way Spitfire,” Brax said.
I went with him, my magic retreating. Warriors came to surround us, protect us in the night.
Derik and Kai stood at the front as Brax, Cain, Beenie, and I stood in the center. All of us faced Heather and her grouping rogues, watching the magic slowly dissipate into nothing.
The second it did, everyone moved. Heather screamed at her rogues to attack, her eyes locked on me and Brax in the center.
Kai and Derik roared, charging with the warriors as we shrunk back. But there was no point because rogues burst in everywhere.
They were all in wolf form like our warriors, and they were on each other straight away. My magic took a minute inside me, but I used my shadows with Brax, refusing to be the weak link.
I wrapped my shadows around the rogues any time they got close and broke them. Brax did the same.
Cain used magic as Beenie tore into her own wolf. A red wolf that looked small but had narrowed black eyes.
I shivered at the look she gave before she started tearing into rogues. But there were so many.
We hadn’t anticipated the volume of rogues that Heather had. They poured through the city, smashing up buildings as more wolves started to defend their sections of the city.
It was hell. A hell where the pack link was wide open and as much of a team as we were, more rogues kept coming.
They started jumping over the wall, and I glared. I went to use my magic, but Cain grabbed my wrist.
“Don’t. That stuff they gave you is dark. You don’t want it near your magic if you can help it,” he warned, yelling over the carnage as explosions started going off.
I nodded and concentrated on my shadows. They were fast and invisible, giving me an edge, but it meant I had to concentrate.
Heather stepped over the threshold of the gates and made her way through the gnashing teeth of the wolves, the flying potions, making it to our huddle with a smirk.
“I have been waiting for this for a very long time,” she smirked, pulling out a vial.
We said nothing, and she threw it. Brax used his shadows and knocked it away.
It blew up in one of her rogue’s faces. She didn’t care.
My claws came out, and I wound my shadows around her feet, twisting them up her body. She struggled against them, but Brax supported my shadows, pinning her hands to her sides.
Cain went to walk forward to rip her weapons belt full of vials from her, but a rogue intercepted, knocking him to the ground.
He fought its gnashing teeth back, but he couldn’t hold him off. I spun, pulling my blade from my waist and shoved it into the rogue.
It cried out then fell to the ground, blood pooling. I helped Cain up, then turned.
Just in time for Heather to rip from our shadows, grab a vial, and throw it. Brax tackled me out of the way, throwing up a shadow shield.
Whatever Heather exploded against it. Brax grunted as it did, grimacing as the pain in his head throbbed. I felt it and went wide-eyed as his shield cracked. His nose bled and his eyes rolled slightly.
“Brax!” I screamed.
He shook free of whatever had happened and slowly stood, spinning to Heather. I got up with him. Cain was distracted, fighting off another beta.
