He didn’t. Instead of making things harder for me to resist, he placed me on the forest floor between his legs.
Then his hands dug into my shoulders.
I moaned as his massage dug deep into my aching muscles.
It felt so damn good. He moved his fingers over my head, through my hair, down my shoulders until I was like jelly, slumping against him with my eyes fluttering closed.
I felt myself slipping into sleep, when Derik picked me up in his arms. He carried me past the fire and under the shelter the pack had brought. He laid me down on the moss covering.
He went to leave but I shook my head.
“Stay,” I whispered, already slipping back into sleep.
Derik nodded and laid down with me. Brax came in too, laying on the other side of me.
Kai brought Beenie in and nodded for her to lie down.
“Kai?” I asked, wanting him close too.
He pushed his way past the other two and kissed me. “I’ll take first watch so the pack and warriors can get some proper sleep, then I’ll have my turn,” Kai said. “Get some sleep.”
Then he left without letting me argue like he knew I wanted to.
Even though I knew it was pointless because he was just that kind of Alpha.
I fell asleep in seconds anyway so whatever argument I had been going to use, it never made it past my tongue.
The next day we were all in much better spirits. We were back racing through the forest.
If the witches had been going to attack, it definitely would have been last night. But they hadn’t. Which in my mind, confirmed Derik’s theory.
I held the scruff of Derik’s neck, the brown fur so soft and addictive.
He ran on his end of the triangle and we were so close. I could feel the humans.
When their scent came, I grinned.
And then Galen was in the link.
‘Careful, there are rogues everywhere. And they’re mindless. Being controlled by the witches, they won’t hesitate so make sure you don’t,’ Galen said in my mind as I connected.
‘So they haven’t figured the tunnels out yet? The children are safe?’ I asked.
‘Of course.’
‘Good. Because we’re almost there and the witches won’t be far behind. Get ready for the final war. It’s either us or them and after what we just went through, I’m going to make sure it’s them,’ I said in the pack link so every wolf knew what we were about to go through.
And the promise of this war being the final time we fought for our lives?
I intended to keep that promise. No matter what.

We came over the hill on the edge of the forest, running down toward the grassland villages.
We hadn’t gotten far down the hill when Cain came bursting out of one of the huts.
He ran at us, his eyes on Beenie.
Her red wolf shifted her into human form mid-run.
He collected her in his arms as she bounded into him.
Her arms went around his neck as she cried against him.
We gave them their privacy and headed to where Mom and Galen were standing, waiting to greet us at the start of the village.
I still couldn’t sense whether the witches were here or not but I guessed they wouldn’t make themselves known until the twins were out.
Which meant I couldn’t run straight to them like I desperately wanted to.
Instead, I climbed off Derik and went to Mom, wrapping my arms around her.
Her tears were wet against my cheek.
“You look terrible. What happened?” she asked.
“Thanks,” I scoffed then smiled as I pulled back. It was a soft smile that asked her to understand that there was nothing about captivity with the witches that she wanted to hear.
“Well, I have tea on, would you like some?” she asked.
I looked over my shoulder as the pack began shifting, rifling through clothes as the humans came out of their huts to give them some.
I gave Galen a hug and he lifted me to his height to squeeze me tight–“I’m glad you’re okay, Luna.”
His voice was soft but full of emotion.
“Me too,” I said then looked at the hut that I knew led down into the tunnels longingly.
But I didn’t dare speak of it.
I didn’t even risk sending my shadows.
I could feel them, that had to be enough. And they would feel us back which was going to have to do until we could be sure we weren’t being used to get to them.
Which I was sure was the case.
Derik, Brax, and Kai came over, their clothes on as they moved in around me.
“We need to talk,” Derik said sternly.
We definitely did. And I wasn’t sure how long we had to do it.
“Come,” Mom said and led us to her hut.
Ryleigh and Vaughn were there.
They came over to hug us.
Derik’s heart clenched as he squeezed Ryleigh. They had a different bond and I felt the loyalty there. It was the same as Kai had around Beenie.
We sat around the small living space, as Mom served tea. Ryleigh and Vaughn sat at the table. Galen leaned against the wall so he could look out of the window every few seconds.
Derik leaned against the wall that the bathroom was behind.
Brax sat next to me on the sofa as Kai stood behind it.
“Where’s Althea?” I asked.
“With the other children but we have to be careful about what we say. We’re not sure how much the rogues and witches can hear when we’re here,” Ryleigh said. I nodded and Brax squeezed my hand.
It was a promise that we would see them soon.
I hoped that was true.
“The city?” Derik asked.
Galen shook his head, “The rogues leveled it. They’re in it, still searching it. We’ve steered clear,” he said quietly.
That was a sucker punch I could’ve done without. We had lost the city?
“There are more rogues than we anticipated. They are everywhere,” Ryleigh admitted.
