“And they don’t attack here?” I frowned.
“Oh, they tried,” Mom said then looked affectionately at Galen, “But we have been well defended,” she smiled.
“And they don’t seem to be attacking. Just searching,” Vaughn said.
We all went silent. We all knew what they were searching for.
“They’ve destroyed the widows’ village and we’re pretty sure they are using it as a base. The women’s village has been burned, most of it uninhabitable, but we have managed to keep this place going. With the help of the vampires of course,” Mom said, sitting down at the table with her own tea.
I sipped mine and nodded, “So how are you managing to keep everything–” I mouthed the word ‘hidden’ in case it gave away too much.
“It has not been without difficulty but we only have a few of us that are here and allowed out,” she pointed to her hut.
“Cain has his place. Ryleigh and Vaughn have theirs. We put Anetta and her husband in one. We have this one. The rest the rogues have searched. The ones they haven’t, we have modified,” Mom explained, then stood up.
She went over to the cupboard. It used to be where her broom was kept. It still was.
I frowned at her, eyeing it like I should see something else.
She moved to the back and moved the drying rack out of the way. Behind it was a wall.
“Wow, Mom, cool wall,” I said.
She smiled and tapped on it once.
It opened.
I raised a brow, and she pulled the trap door open to reveal a tunnel.
“Very cool,” I murmured.
She smiled and closed it all again, then went back to her table.
“They are all connected,” she whispered. I nodded. That was good.
“And the rest of the livestock? Crops?”
“Healthy,” she nodded.
“Then we are ready for the witches?” I asked, looking at Kai too since he was in charge of the warriors.
“As ready as we can. The warriors are spreading around the villages, while the humans get them weapons. Although I’m not sure how much damage they will even do,” Kai sighed.
That reminded me.
I grinned and slipped my hand into my pocket, pulling out the small gold square I had put in there earlier.
It was the sword.
It had collapsed easily so I had tucked it away.
“This bad boy killed a witch,” I grinned.
“You killed a witch,” Derik smirked.
I nodded, and threw the square in the air. It turned into the sword, snapping into place. I caught it at the handle and I smiled down at it.
I wanted to keep it but it wasn’t mine. The sword nor the revenge.
Galen eyed it, coming over to inspect the gold of it. It had gold speckles hovering around it, and it didn’t seem solid gold. More like a gold glow.
“I’m going to give this to who it belongs to,” I said. They didn’t need to ask who.
We all knew who needed it.
I left the hut and went across to Cain’s. I could sense him and his magic, so I let it guide me to the right one.
I walked in, knocking on the door as I entered.
I should’ve waited.
“Fuck,” Cain cursed, his pants hanging on his ass as he stood between Beenie’s legs. She was on the countertop, her shirt open, her legs bare.
“Sorry!” I winced, my eyes slamming shut. I went to turn, feeling for the door.
“Wait,” Cain said, and I stopped, waiting.
There was a quick rustle of clothing before the footsteps came closer.
“Can I open my eyes now?” I asked.
“Yeah,” he murmured.
I opened them, avoiding looking either of them in the eye.
Cain’s eyes were on the sword.
“I thought you might want this. I got it from one of the witches when I killed her.” I handed over the sword.
Cain lifted it like it was precious porcelain and eyed the blade.
“These haven’t been seen in centuries,” he said on a breath.
I waited, not sure what to say. I kind of just wanted to leave so they could get back to what they were doing.
It’s what I would be doing if I didn’t have to be a Luna first.
“She broke out of one of the witches’ cages. She still had her magic,” Beenie whispered to Cain, sitting on the edge of the sofa.
The hut was almost a replica of Mom’s. Just smaller.
And it had a breakfast counter that was apparently not being used for breakfast.
More like brunch. And Beenie was the meal.
I was jealous. I missed my Alphas devouring me like that. It felt like years since the heat despite it only being a few days ago, maybe a week.
“You still had your magic?” Cain said, his eyes wide, “In the mountain?”
I nodded, “Yeah. It was dull, suppressed, until it wasn’t,” I shrugged.
“That’s meant to be impossible, I hope you realize how powerful that makes you,” he muttered, still inspecting the blade.
“As long as it gives us more of a chance then good,” I said.
“It does,” he reassured, “So does this sword.”
I didn’t know what else to say so I decided that was my cue to leave, “Well, I’m going to go. Enjoy the sword and the other stuff. I’ll see you later when the witches come to kill us,” I said.
“Wait,” he stopped me. I looked up and he came forward, wrapping his arm around my neck, bringing me into a hug.
I hugged him back, ignoring the fact that he had no shirt on.
“Thank you for this,” he said against me.
The door opened behind us then and my Alphas stepped in as I broke from Cain, peering over my shoulder.
They instantly scowled.
“Cain. If you touch our mate half naked, reeking of sex again, I will shove your pretty new sword through your chest, do we understand each other?” Kai said, that fake smile on his face that was actually a threat.
I smiled and moved into him. He rested his arms on my shoulders.
Derik grabbed my hand and kissed the back of it.
