I kept low as the rogue sniffed a few more times then padded out of the hut.
My heart rate returned to normal, and I looked down at Kai and Brax.
“A rogue was there. Looking for the sword,” I whispered.
“And nobody sensed it?” Brax asked.
I shook my head when there was a low growl.
And it wasn’t from Kai.
My heart stopped, my body frozen as I slowly turned my head to the grate above me.
A wolf snarled at me, its muzzle spitting foaming saliva as it gnashed its teeth.
Shit.
A fucking rogue.
38. The Hut
Lorelai
I didn’t have time to think, only react.
I shoved my magic through the grate and muzzled the wolf with it. If it let out a howl and let others know where we were, then we were fucked and the tunnels were exposed.
I scrambled out of the grate, Kai right behind me. He grabbed the rogue as I pinned it with my magic and he snapped its body. It whined then slumped to the floor.
That had been so close.
Brax put the grate back and covered it in some ash and dust from the fireplace to make it look less touched.
I hoped that was enough. Technically, the rogues shouldn’t have a link since they didn’t have a pack but I had no idea what kind of magic the witches had pulled on them.
If they did have a link, we were also fucked so at this very early stage of the night, it wasn’t looking good.
Derik burst in then, his eyes going to the dead rogue on the floor.
“Whatever you just did put something in motion. All the rogues are moving in, aiming for this place,” he said.
“It told them where to look,” I shook my head, my fists clenching.
I should’ve learned by now that everything was a trap.
“Then let’s get this party started,” Kai rolled his shoulders back, ready to take whatever he needed to down.
But I knew the real fight wasn’t with the rogues. It was the witches.
“I’m sure they will be here once we are too distracted with the rogues, Spitfire,” Brax said dryly.
That was my guess too.
“I’m going to go check on the warriors, it’s time we took the fight to the rogues,” Kai grinned.
Derik nodded, “That’s all we can do now and if we call enough of them here, they will empty out of our city,” he said.
Kai and Derik left the home and the link started going crazy with orders and directives.
They had multiple plans and contingencies.
But my focus was the witches. My magic lifted through my body to my fingertips, burning there as my shadows writhed.
I was ready and so were they.
“Be safe, Spitfire,” Brax said as we headed to the door.
I was not letting them get in.
I nodded, “You too.”
Brax stepped up on the railing of the hut decking then used it to hoist himself onto the roof. He leaned down and offered me a hand, “Need a lift?” he asked.
I shook my head and did the same as he had, climbing up.
It was a good idea. We could see for miles through the forest from this vantage point.
I squinted into the distance, through the trees to where I was sure we had come from.
I thought I could see the vague outline of the witch mountain but it was hidden so I decided it was just a play on the way the moon was shining over that part of the forest.
I focused back on the wolves. They were coming from everywhere. Weaving through the forest, over the grasslands, heading straight for us.
‘Derik, are the vampires on their way?’ I asked.
‘They’ll be here soon, they have rogues on their end,’ Derik said back in the link.
Perfect.
Derik and Kai didn’t wait for the rogues to get close, they took their factions of warriors to them, meeting them on the edge of the village and the fight erupted instantly.
Wolves slashed at wolves, their teeth and claws tearing at each other.
I watched, helping where I could.
Brax too. We stood on the rooftop, checking our wolves and making sure their backs were watched. I used my shadows mostly, saving my magic for the witches. But it was hard.
The witches weren’t there, and I had no idea when they were going to make their appearance.
But I had to be ready when they did. I couldn’t do what I had done with Silas. I had given in and used my magic too early.
I had saved my wolves, but I had risked too much by weakening myself.
I wasn’t going to make that same mistake.
Kai fought aggressively, sniping and playing with the rogues he went for. Derik was faster, cleaner, taking each one out and moving on.
And they were doing well to keep the rogues from getting close to any of the huts. But there were just so many.
We had a large number, our pack was a combination of all three and filled a city, but the rogues were even more.
I hadn’t even realized there were so many without a pack.
“There shouldn’t be. We have not banished this many wolves. Not even our parents,” Brax said as he eyed a rogue that slipped through the fights.
It bolted towards our hut and I rammed my shadows at it, snapping its neck.
The crunch had me wincing.
The rogue slumped and I checked for any more that might have gotten through.
“How are there so many then? There weren’t this many humans taken either?”
“I don’t know. But I do know they are strong and as rogues, shouldn’t be following the witches lead. Their entire thing is not following anyone. They shift and stay shifted, preferring to live as wolves,” Brax explained as he used his shadows on another rogue that was about to munch on Hank.
It made no sense but then everything in the realm was a little hard for me to wrap my head around.
Well it had been since I had gone home with three Alphas.
Something turned in my gut and I knew I was close to figuring it out but I just couldn’t get there.
I looked down at the dead rogue, ‘I need to get down there,’ I said, already going to climb down.
Brax looked like he wanted to stop me but I was already climbing down.
