Brax grinned, covered in blood and scratches from the rogues.
He yanked and the witch went wide-eyed before it exploded in beautiful gold ash.
I moved quickly, racing for the ash.
But the final witch got there first, blasting Cain so hard and so fast, he dropped the sword in the mud.
Cain crashed through a hut, and he didn’t get back up.
“Cain!” I cried.
The witch’s echo chuckled.
I stood with my Alphas, all three of them at my side as we faced the witch.
She sucked in the last of the gold ash, the last of the power.
Then she picked up the sword and rose.
It was intimidating, yeah, but then the bitch grinned–something she reserved for particularly evil parts of her plan.
And that was when I knew we were fucked.
‘Thanks for getting them out of the way for me,’ she smirked, then held her arms out.
Her body glowed, the whole thing levitating.
I sucked in a breath, stepping back, my hands in my Alphas’ hands.
I squinted against how bright it was.
“We’re fucked,” Brax laughed dryly.
“Pretty much,” I agreed.
‘We can take the bitch,’ Kai snarled.
‘We have no choice,’ Derik bit out, then we all cowered because her wave of power had us all on our knees.
The realm quaked, the ground shaking as the realm screamed in my head.
It took me a whole other minute of the screaming to realize it was actually coming from me.
40. The Witch
Lorelai
We weren’t strong enough. The witch threw us into huts, along the ground, rebounding every attack with glowing gold eyes.
We had no chance.
Not when she was so strong.
My skin was mottled with bruises, cuts, scrapes, and I was pretty sure I had broken at least two fingers. Possibly toes and definitely my wrist.
The Alphas were in their wolf forms, all going at her, all together, separate, it didn’t matter because she had the sword.
She swung it expertly.
I grimaced as I climbed up out of the rubble of yet another hut, wood and debris falling.
Damn, that one had hurt.
Kai pulled me up, with his teeth hooked into my dress like a cub.
I shooed him off.
“I’m fine,” I panted, “But this witch is pissing me off. I can’t get close and she fights off my magic like it’s nothing,” I snapped.
Kai nuzzled my stomach, a small whine escaping.
‘At the risk of sounding like Derik, any chance you’d think about sitting this one out?’ he asked.
I smiled and ignored his question. He knew me better, but at least he had asked.
I walked out of the hut, my eyes going wide as I saw her with two tendrils of gold, sparkling around my mates’ necks.
“No,” I growled, and my own magic dragged my shadows out, twisting with them, launching at the witch.
She stumbled back, her magic snapping back inside her.
I stormed ahead, knowing I had to use that window of catching her off guard.
Kai ran with me, and we both attacked.
I used him, running and jumping off his lowered head. He launched me off his back, and I flipped over the witch, using both hands to pour my storm of magic onto her.
It coated her, burning away her glow until she screeched.
She blasted hers back, the magic going head to head with mine as I landed.
I planted my feet, and my Alphas sped to her.
They kept her busy, one hand trying to stop them from getting to her with the sword, the other fighting me.
I pushed harder, my magic demanding her demise.
My shadows were angry too, fighting just as hard.
My heart raced, my head pounded, and I pushed.
I was good at pushing, which was to be expected after three kids.
But she was pushing back. I screamed and forced more of my magic on her until it was beating hers, swallowing hers, getting closer to landing on her.
I just needed a really good hit so we had a chance to get the sword back and end her.
She didn’t seem to like that plan though and refused to go down easily.
The witch had sweat dripping down her forehead, and I smirked. I bet that wasn’t part of the perfection.
Which meant I was getting to her. As weary as I was feeling, she was feeling it too.
I should’ve known that was when she would get nasty.
Just when I thought I had her, my magic almost on her, she got in my head.
She shoved images in there of her torturing my Alphas. Killing my children.
Destroying each member of the pack in the most brutal, inhumane ways possible.
I screamed as my head ached, trying to shove her out. But she stayed, imprinting the images until I was the one sweating.
Tears welled in my eyes, and I clenched them shut, trying to shove the images out.
I held my magic, but my arms shook.
So much pain. It was like a hammer on my skull, every picture drilling down into my brain.
“Stop it!” I screamed.
I let go of my magic.
Hers flew towards me, and just as I opened my eyes, it exploded against me, sending me flying.
