Kai ran for me. He jumped off the debris of the hut that Cain still lay in and caught me, shifting mid-jump.
We rolled in the mud, his arms holding me tight in their cage so I didn’t hit the ground once.
Mud flung around us, and when we finally stopped, my heart was tight in my throat.
I looked up to see the witch aiming her sword at Derik’s throat, Brax on the ground next to her.
Which meant I couldn’t stop.
I scrambled to my feet and poured my magic from me. My shadows shot out, combining with it, and just before she hurt him, she turned and grabbed the whip of my magic.
I gasped as her intentions hit me. So fierce and strong.
She hated us. She saw us as beneath her. How dare we be more powerful?
“You think the realm betrayed you?” I gasped as she dragged me forward. Kai shifted back into his wolf but I knew he was in pain. He had broken bones in that fall.
‘It did. It gave our power to a damn winterborn,’ she hissed, her echo loud and vengeful.
So that was what this was. Jealousy.
“So you destroy it? That only leads to you with no power at all,” I said.
She smirked, ‘Wrong. It leads to me owning it,’ she said then yanked me forward, still grasping my magic.
It squealed and hissed in her hands. My shadows tried to attack but her hand wouldn’t release.
Kai growled and threatened to attack but she shook her head.
‘I’ll put this sword through your brethren before you get to me,’ she said, and I didn’t doubt it.
Derik smirked and before she could stop him, he yanked the sword from her grasp. Brax snapped awake and tackled her to the ground at the waist.
I gasped and stepped back as Derik jumped over her.
I tried not to notice that he was in his naked human form, but he was my mate. I noticed.
He smirked as he hung the sword over the witch who was panting on the ground. Brax held one hand, Kai on the other.
I walked over, staring down at her.
“Would it matter if I asked you not to do this?”
She stayed silent.
I thought we had her, I thought the sword was going to slice through her, but before it could, she blasted us all back.
Her power radiated off her, the glow back as her eyes bore down on me.
I got up, dusting off my ass, but it was muddied.
A dress. So practical, of course. Mine was torn, hanging on my body by a single strap on one shoulder.
It was covered in dirt, and it was patchy in so many places.
I was one fall away from losing the damn thing.
And she got a kickass gold outfit? Not on my priorities, but it still seemed a little one-sided.
Just like the fight.
She had so much power. I had thought I had enough to beat her, but she was more than me. I knew that, but it didn’t mean I could stop fighting. If we weren’t meant to defeat her, then the realm wouldn’t have led us to this.
The witch got up and eyed the hut.
She didn’t even look at us, lifting gold magic walls on either side of her.
All the way to the hut.
Panic seized me; she couldn’t get in there.
My heart thumped so loudly I was sure it was going to beat right out of my chest. Tears prickled in my eyes, and I ran at the magic, but it was a barrier I couldn’t get past.
I tried my magic on it.
Kai tried to smash the sword down on it.
Nothing worked.
And the witch knew it.
She walked through her magic walkway, moving slowly like she had all the time in the world.
She went to the hut, and I sucked in a breath.
I couldn’t stop her. She was going to get in there.
But she didn’t know there were other ways in.
So I did the only thing I could think of.
I threw my magic at the hut.
I twisted my shadows with my magic creating a tornado of wind as high as the hut then I aimed the power straight at the wooden building.
I was already taking it down when she noticed me.
Then she scowled.
‘You are really getting on my nerves winterborn,’ she seethed, her echo getting drowned out by my tornado.
I took out the hut. The wood, the furniture, everything in it was swallowed by my magic and shadow. Panels and board, straw and nails came flying out in every direction. I did my best to avoid them but some still scraped across my skin.
The witch narrowed her eyes on me.
She came for me, her glowing magic moving in my direction.
I moved my tornado faster, swiping her out of the way.
I picked her up in it and threw her back to her precious rogues down the other end of the village.
It gave me a second and I needed it.
My head was spinning and I stumbled, Brax there, holding me up.
“Catch your breath, that won’t keep her busy for long,” he said.
I laughed at the way he fussed because he looked just as bad as I did.
Kai and Derik came over, back in their wolf forms.
They both licked over me and I petted them but I had something else to do before I attempted killing the witch.
I went over and picked up the sword, stumbling over to Cain. I sifted through the rubble and found him, his head bleeding.
“Cain,” I whispered.
‘Beenie?’ I asked in the link.
She took a while to answer.
‘He’s alive. Heal him. I can’t get out of here, the rogues are still overwhelming the others and they’ll scent us at any other entrance,’ she said not sounding happy about that.
I put my hands over Cain, letting my magic go so it could heal Cain.
