He coughed and sputtered, his eyes slowly fluttering open.
“Did we win?” he murmured.
“Not yet. The last witch is too strong,” I admitted.
He nodded then eyed the sword as he sat up.
I handed it to him then helped him up.
He brushed himself off then looked for the witch.
We checked where she was coming out of the residue of the hut.
That’s when we heard the screaming.
Agonizing screams that went off one by one.
~’The pack!’ Kai roared in the link then took after them. We all ran towards the screaming, coming to a stop when we saw what was happening.
The rogues had stopped fighting because the witch had taken over.
She was standing in the middle of our pack. She had them all on their knees.
Hundreds of our wolves at her mercy.
‘You give up the gifted children and your magic. And I let them go. Refuse again and I take over their heads completely.’
The threat was so real it made my heart ache. They would become rogues. And not the normal ones, the kind that Heather had been.
Taylor shivered as the witch held her by her hair, “We are with you Alphas. Luna. We accept this sacrifice for our heirs. For our legacy. For our future.”
She barely got out her sentence when she started screaming again.
Tears streamed down her face.
Whatever the witch was doing in her mind, it was excruciating.
Taylor’s tears turned black, her heart started stuttering.
Her nose bled black, her screams became garbled.
“Stop!” A familiar voice said through the screams.
My heart stopped, true fear dripping like ice in my veins.
“Beenie?” I whispered as she came over to us. She had Alaric wrapped to her chest. She had Zale and Enzi on each hip.
I went wide-eyed at her as she avoided looking at us.
“What are you doing?” Kai snarled.
She turned to him, tears in her eyes.
“Saving the pack. We should never have let a winterborn take us over. She is the curse. She always has been,” Beenie said, her voice ending in a whisper.
The ice turned to a blade in my heart.
Beenie? Kai’s sister? She was the one I hadn’t seen. I had thought she was loyal. For Cain. For us. But she had been working against us the whole time?
It couldn’t be true.
My body was so cold with the betrayal.
She went to Cain and kissed him, “We do this and we will get your mother back, it has been promised,” she said.
Cain winced, his eyes going to me and the Alphas.
Time was as frozen as I was, the silence thick and deafening.
Finally, he nodded.
My heart shattered.
He didn’t look at us as he took the sword to the witch who looked way too pleased with herself.
I shook my head, “No, you are not doing this. She is manipulating you. Beenie, give me the children, please,” I begged, tears fresh and flowing.
She shook her head and handed Alaric over to the witch.
Derik growled, whimpering.
He attacked.
The witch grinned and threw him to the side with an easy flick of her magic.
‘Anyone else?’ she offered.
I reached for my magic but it refused me.
Betrayal kicked me in the gut again. I yanked on my magic, my shadows. But nothing.
Brax stood next to me, slipping his hand in mine.
He gave me a kiss on the cheek and I knew what it meant.
Goodbye.
He wasn’t letting her have them without doing everything he could to stop her.
He grabbed his shadows, his listening to him and he threw them at her.
The witch threw his shadows off him with her magic before lifting the sword with a single raise of her finger.
She threw it at him.
Kai jumped in front of the blade.
It sunk into his stomach.
I screamed so loud my throat hurt as much as my heart.
“No!” I dropped to my knees as he fell into me.
Brax, wide-eyed, bent down too.
I tried to heal Kai, but my magic wouldn’t move.
“Please, please,” I begged.
Kai held my face, blood staining his lips.
“I’ll be fine, Little Luna. Not even that bad,” he coughed, wincing as his eyes rolled.
“No,” I cried, my body throbbed so badly.
I had never experienced such pain.
I spun to the witch, my fists clenched. Then Beenie. Then Cain.
Traitors. All of them.
Anger roiled inside me, and I yanked my magic so hard that a sputter came up to my fingertips.
But it was not enough to do anything, so I shoved it into Kai.
