Smiling, Neil agreed, “Yeah, River is pretty tough. It’s only the fourth day, isn’t it?”
“Well, to be more specific, it’s three days and a half. The doctor said it would take five days, didn’t he?”
Kenny sought clarification.
Neil nodded. “Yes.”
“I’m excited!” Kenny put his palms together and looked up at the sky. “God must have heard my prayers and helped River wake up.”
“Prayers?” Doubtfully, Neil glanced at Kenny. “What did you say?”
“I said I was willing to exchange my life for River to wake upl” Kenny replied seriously.
Stunned, Neil rebuked, “How could you say that casually?”
Kenny waved. “Alas, it’s just a prayer. It wouldn’t be true. Neil-“
A truck hit the rear of Neil’s car and interrupted Kenny’s words.
Neil immediately braked the car because of the sudden strong impact. But he didn’t expect the truck to keep charging forward and hitting his car against the bridge’s iron railing.
Neil and Kenny’s minds went blank the moment they were lifted in midair and fell hard into the river with the car.
The doctor replied, “You’re welcome. If her condition is good, she can leave the ICU tomorrow night.”
Thomas and Greta agreed to the plan.
After the doctor left, Liora turned to Thomas, extending her hands. “Hold me, Granduncle Tom. I want to see Mommy!”
Smiling, Thomas replied, “Sure. Let me hold you so you can see her.”
While talking, Thomas bent over to carry Liora, but his phone suddenly rang when he touched her.
Coaxing Liora, Thomas said, “Wait, Lia.”
Liora nodded obediently.
Thomas fished out his phone and picked up the call. “Hello? Who’s calling?”
“Hello, I’m a police officer. May I ask if you’re Mr. Thomas Xander?”
“Yes, speaking. May I ask what this is about?”
“Is Neil Xander your nephew?”
Thomas was stunned. “Yes, what’s the matter with him?”
“Please come to Irribel Bridge now, Mr. Xander. Your nephew’s car fell into the river 20 minutes ago.”
Thomas almost blacked out and staggered against the wall. He snapped back to reality.
Greta noticed that and frowned. “What’s wrong, Tom?”
Thomas‘ hand shook, and he dropped his phone. His lips trembled. “Neil, he…”
A bad feeling hit Greta. “What?”
“Neil’s car fell off the bridge into the river.”
The shocking news left Greta speechless.
Similarly, the triplets widened their eyes in shock as blood drained from their faces.
Thomas suppressed his emotions and said, “I’ve got to go there. Watch the kids, Greta.”
After that, he hurriedly dashed toward the elevator, 1/3
Greta’s legs went limp as she collapsed on the floor.
Seeing that, the children immediately went over to support her. “Grandaunt Greta!”
Greta’s eyes were red as tears fell. Grief–stricken, she covered her face and cried indignantly. “What kind of sin did we commit?”
Meanwhile, Yuliana rushed to the scene immediately after Thomas had informed her.
Her heart tightened when she saw the barricade tape and the large hole in the railing from the collision the minute she got out of the car.
She unconsciously rushed toward the barricade tape but was stopped by a nearby police officer.
“It’s dangerous over there, Miss!”
She forced back her agitation and trembled as she asked, “Was it a white Rolls–Royce that fell off the bridge with K99 as the last digits of the license plate?”
The police officer asked, “May I know who you are to Mr. Xander?”
“I’m his cousin!” Yuliana cried and yelled, “Can I go and take a look, please? That is my cousin!”
Noah immediately thought of River and hastily called her. He knew she must be beside herself, but her phone was switched off.
Frustrated, he tugged at his tie and hurried to his office.
After a brief thought, he tried calling Thomas but couldn’t reach him.
Seeing that, Reuben reminded, “Why don’t you call Mr. Price, Mr. De Marco?”
Enlightened, Noah called Alex, who picked up instantly.
“Hello?” Alex sounded lazy.
Noah asked sternly, “Where are you?”
“At home. Why? Are you going to ask about what my parents said, Noah? I cowered after I got hom-“
“I don’t want to hear you talk about that!” Noah interrupted. “Neil’s car fell into the river, and I can’t reach River!”
“What?!” Alex immediately snapped back to reality. “Neil fell into the river?”
“Go to the scene now! River must be there! Ask her to pick up my call!”
“No, she won’t be there!” Alex blurted out without thinking.
Frowning deeply, Noah demanded, “What do you mean?”
Alex realized his mistake. “No, nothing. I’ll go there now.”
“Alex!” Noah snapped. “Are you keeping something from me?”
Alex guiltily answered, “That’s impossible…”
“Don’t force me to look into it myself,” Noah threatened. “I hate it the most when people lie to me!”
Alex could feel Noah’s wrath and feared he couldn’t keep it from him any longer. He exhaled and gave in.” Forget it.
I’ll tell you. Daniella shot River twice in the chest on the engagement night. She’s still lying in the ICU and isn’t out of danger yet.”
Upon hearing that, Noah’s mind went blank, and a freezing chill overwhelmed him. He was heartbroken, it turned out River couldn’t respond because she was shot. But he was still ignorant and stuck in Muricia, handling annoying affairs.
He felt the urgency to return to his homeland immediately.
Gasping, Noah stared at Reuben with red eyes. “Now! I want to go back to our country now!”
Reuben looked at Noah in astonishment, wondering why he had suddenly lost control of his emotions. However, he could vaguely feel how serious it was.
Reuben nodded immediately. “Okay, Mr. De Marco. I’ll get people to prepare your private jet.”
Half an hour later, Noah stepped onto the company rooftop. The helicopter was already in motion, sending waves of loud noises from the propellers.
Reuben began organizing the documents on the desk upon entering the office.
After sorting them, he took shots of the important ones, intending to send them to Noah later in the night.
As he neared completion, a knock on the office door interrupted him. Without lifting his head, Reuben said, “Come in.”
The door opened, revealing a man in sunglasses.
“Mr. Murphy, is Mr. De Marco ready? We should set off now,” the man stated.
In response, both Reuben and Julian looked up.
Reuben’s expression shifted instantly upon recognizing the helicopter’s pilot. “Aren’t you supposed to be in the helicopter?”
The pilot frowned and asked, “Didn’t I text you that I was in the washroom?”
Reuben checked his pocket while Julian pointed out, “Your phone is on the coffee table.”
“Call Mr. De Marco now!” Reuben exclaimed.
Julian promptly made the call, but Noah’s phone was off.
Distraught, Reuben collapsed on the chair and lamented, “We’re screwed. We’ve protected him so well, but someone still managed to take advantage of it.”
Julian sternly asked, “Did you tell anyone that Mr. De Marco is leaving?”
“No!” Reuben responded vexedly. “I just informed the pilot!”
Julian punched the wall. “Motherfucker! There must be spies in the company!”
Reuben said, “It’s not the time for that now. We must find Mr. De Marco as soon as possible!”
Julian turned to the pilot, asking, “Is there another private helicopter in the company?”
The pilot shook his head, explaining, “No, we rarely use the private helicopter.”
“The monitoring screen!” Reuben suggested. “Let’s check where the helicopter has flown to.”
“Come. Let’s go to the monitoring room,” the pilot proposed.
Five minutes later, Reuben and Julian reached the monitoring room.
Seeing the black screen, Reuben realized the severity of the situation; their enemy didn’t want them to know Noah’s destination.
Julian stood nearby and cursed profusely.
When the pilot moved to grab Noah’s collar, Noah ceased keeping his phone in his pocket and delivered a powerful punch to the pilot’s face.
The pilot absorbed the blow head–on, caught off guard by Noah’s sudden attack. Grimacing in pain, he took two steps back.
The pilot laughed sarcastically and stared at the stony–faced Noah. “Ha! I didn’t expect you to have a trick or two up your sleeves.”
