“We can be busy together,” Kai grinned.
“If we can go to the masquerade ball. Together,” I bargained.
“I’ll escort you, Beautiful,” Derik whispered in my ear.
I shivered against him, his fingertips brushing my skin where he undid my dress.
“I’m not scared of vampires,” Brax smirked, his shadows still caressing me.
I licked my parted lips before Kai kissed them again.
“I am not scared of vampires. I just don’t want to spend this specific night with them instead of naked with my mate,” he said, kissing me deeply again.
His tongue delved inside my mouth and I moaned a second before what he said, registered.
“I’m always naked with you. Why does this night matter?” I asked, nodding to the invitation.
“It is a night we usually spend fucking,” Kai grinned.
“It is meant to be a night the moon is hidden, Beautiful. We take it as a sign that we are to hide too,” Derik explained in a much better way.
I stopped kissing Kai and looked over my shoulder at Derik, “Hide? How?”
“We shift. We fuck as wolves. We spend our nights in the forest,” Derik said.
“What about the children who don’t shift yet?” I asked, thinking of the kids. Ours could shift because of my magic in their veins but most couldn’t, not at their age.
“They make masks. Wolf masks at school and wear them at night. We let them stay up and have roasted marshmallows and candy. Before we go, we each give them a treat to thank them for protecting the city while we are in the forest. Not that they do, the elders do but it makes them excited,” Brax said.
I had never heard of such a tradition and I had been with them for years now.
“How did I not know of this?” I asked, raising a brow.
“We haven’t done it in a while. During the winterborn war, everything that left the city unprotected was forgone. But this year, we could restart that. Go to the ball while the children stay home and eat candy,” Derik smiled.
“They would enjoy that,” I grinned.
“And what about the part where some of the children prank us for when we come back from the forest?” Brax raised a brow.
“They do that?” I laughed.
“Poison Ivy is their favorite,” Kai groaned.
I laughed again, “We should start the tradition again.”
“Good, fucking in the forest as wolves it is,” Kai said, kissing me.
I let him but then pulled away, “No. We go to a masquerade ball while the youngsters eat their treats and trick us. I think it could be fun,” I smiled.
I hadn’t seen the tradition, so even if there were pranks involved, I wanted to experience it.
We had said goodbye to the wars. We could bring back the traditions that meant something more.
“We’re going to the ball, Beautiful. Even if I have to drag Kai there myself. We will give you this,” Derik promised.
I grinned then leaned back into him.
I wound my shadows around Brax’s tugging them closer to me then pulled Kai’s mouth down to mine.
“Good. Now can you give me something else? Because your mate wants to say thank you,” I whispered before letting them ravage me like the animals they were.
Chapter 2. The Ball
Lorelai
“I’m not going to make it through tonight,” I whispered breathily, sitting between Kai and Brax. Across from me sat Derik.
The carriage was taking us to the vampire’s castle. We were almost there, but I was sure this was a bad idea.
My stomach churned with desire as I eyed them.
Each one of them was dressed in black–black pants, shirts, vests, and cloaks. Their masks were black too, but each was unique.
Derik wore a black mask with black detailing in swirling vine patterns. Kai’s was adorned with black roses. Brax’s mask featured black waves. These designs represented their respective territories, making them look intimidating. And hot.
The only color they wore was teal. A single teal feather was nestled amongst a handful of black ones on each of their masks. The teal matched my dress.
“You’re telling me. You’re going to be very distracting tonight, Spitfire,” Brax said, licking his lips as his eyes roamed over me.
I was in a full dress, one of the fanciest ones I had ever worn.
Evelyn had sent it to me for the ball. She insisted it was what everyone would be wearing.
The teal silk felt amazing on my skin and it was beautiful. It was tight on my bodice, the corset fitting me perfectly. The black edges and lacing up the front made it look like it was designed for me. It had black skirts underneath with teal silk covering it.
But it was the way it made my body look–seductive and alluring.
It accentuated my breasts, showing them off from the top of the squared neckline. The sleeves had a slight puff at the top of the arms, a black cuff, and then tight silk down to my hands.
Anetta had painted my nails black too.
I matched my Alphas well. We looked great and I felt great. But we had to go into a ball rather than the bedroom, so I wasn’t sure how to not feel how I was feeling when I looked at my Alphas.
I licked my lips and blew out a tense breath.
Before I could suggest a momentary pause in our travels for me to get rid of the tension with my Alphas, the carriage came to a stop.
“We can always turn around, Little Luna,” Kai tried.
I rolled my eyes and shook my head.
“No, let’s go,” I grinned.
I had never been to a ball. I wasn’t even really sure what it was.
“Come, Beautiful. Let us show you what it is,” Derik smiled as he stepped out of the carriage first. He held the door open and his hand out to me.
I grinned, taking his hand.
He helped me down onto the ground where there was a red carpet rolled out, lined with guards. Each one of them was in a red cloak and a red mask.
There were lanterns with red flames in them lining the carpet and leading the way into the castle.
It looked so magical. There was a single vampire waiting at the gate into the castle, just over the moat.
She had heels on with a long silky dress. Red and black lace were all over her and I recognized her tall figure.
“Evelyn,” I smiled.
“Lorelai. Still dragging these three around then?” She teased, nodding to my Alphas.
“Of course. And where are your warriors?” I asked.
“Around,” she shrugged, “I’m sure they’ll find me out here eventually but the chase is a part of the fun,” she winked from behind her red mask that covered half her face in swirls, “You four can head inside, the ballroom is straight ahead, just follow the dreadful music,” she said then walked off, her tall lithe body heading into the forest. It was then I saw the five shadows following her.
I grinned then headed in the direction she had pointed.
Entering the black castle was always mesmerizing. A healthy mix of fear and trauma tried to douse me but I didn’t let it in.
I did let in the decorations hanging on all the stone. There were red lanterns, paintings of spiders on the walls, spiderwebs, some shadows.
It was all very spooky. But in a tasteful manner.
The ballroom was just as grand when we entered, still following the red carpet.
