It was filled with people all in masks. The lanterns cast a red glow but it was dim enough to give a mysterious feeling to everything.
Lucien sat on a platform, a black throne at the top of it. He was surrounded by vampires, all with masks and beautiful clothing.
Evelyn was right. The dress I was wearing fit in well. But it was the only one in teal. The others had gone with black, red, silver, some dark purple. But I was the only one in a bright color. Standing out in a room with a whole bunch of vampires was not my intention.
“You are winterborn. Also hybrid. You were always going to stand out, Beautiful,” Derik brushed his lips across my cheek.
“I’ll go get us drinks,” Brax said, heading over to the table against the far back wall that was covered in black cloth, snacks and a large crystal bowl of red punch.
The snacks were all decorated to look like bugs too which was almost terrifying.
If it wasn’t really fucking cool at the same time.
Brax weaved through the crowd, disappearing into it. Derik slid his arm through mine as Kai stood with his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes narrowed behind his mask.
Lucien gave a slight wave from his throne on the candle-lit stage and Derik smiled, nodding slightly.
“I need to see Lucien, will you be okay with Nikolai?” Derik asked.
I nodded, grinning as I looked around the ballroom. Others were dancing to the band that sat in the corner.
They were playing a melody I didn’t recognize but it was beautiful. They were dressed just as beautifully.
Derik kissed my cheek then left towards Lucien.
I smirked up at Kai, “Dance with me?” I asked.
Nikolai looked at the couples swirling elegantly across the ballroom in a perfectly synchronized dance with a grimace.
“You remember our wedding dance, don’t you Little Luna?”
“I remember your hands on my body during the dance,” I smirked, showing him the heat in my gaze so he knew what attracted me about the dancing.
He smirked and leaned closer, his hand brushing my hip, his lips by my ear, “Hold that thought, Little Luna. I’m going to go find Brax with those drinks and then I will spend the rest of the night holding you like I did that night,” he whispered in that husky tone that always made me shudder. I licked my lips, my stomach and chest tight as my core clenched.
“I like the sound of that,” I let out on a breath.
Kai grinned then skulked away into the tall crowd of vampires.
I stood on the edge of the ballroom, watching everyone mingle and dance, drink and talk, waiting for my alphas to come back.
I wasn’t sure how long I waited but it was long enough for my throat to parch and my feet to ache.
The music still filled the room and the vampires showed no sign of stopping the ball anytime soon but if my alphas didn’t come back soon, I was going to start to worry.
Scratch that, I was already worrying.
I looked over to the drinks table.
I couldn’t see Brax.
I looked up to where Lucien sat relaxed in his throne.
I couldn’t see Derik.
I checked through the crowd for Kai’s black hair.
I couldn’t see him.
I tried to stop the panic that bubbled in my throat but it came swiftly.
My stomach tensed in an entirely different way and I checked the link. It was empty. Quiet. Gone.
Fear gripped me so tight, I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
If we were in the city, I would not have worried. But we weren’t. We were in the middle of a room full of vampires. And we were the only werewolves that had come.
I shivered and started making my way across the ballroom to Lucien. I had to find my Alphas.
I was sure the vampires could be trusted, but that didn’t mean something hadn’t happened.
I eyed Lucien on his throne and started heading in that direction, my stomach tight the whole time. My head was almost spinning as I thought about losing them in this place.
I checked every vamp that looked even a little similar.
The masks that had seemed so beautiful before seemed like a mean trick. More terrifying with only eyes to judge on.
And those eyes frowned at me as I moved past, my breaths harsh and fast as I parted the crowd.
But I couldn’t find my Alphas.
They were gone.
And so was the link.
Chapter 3. The Dark
Lorelai
“Read this,” a voice whispered in my ear, their breath cold and sweet.
I tensed and spun toward the voice, but whoever it belonged to was gone.
I frowned, standing in the middle of the ballroom surrounded by dancers.
I felt a piece of parchment in my hand and dared to read what it said.
In elegant black cursive, the parchment read, ‘The hall to the left. Follow it.’
I glanced through the crowd of masks and ballgowns to the left of the room. There was a dark hall, and I had no idea where it led.
I wasn’t even sure why I was entertaining the idea of going–or why I was listening to a piece of paper. But I wanted to find my Alphas.
What if they were down there? What if they were in trouble?
I shivered at the idea and found myself heading toward the dark hall.
Nobody stopped me. The vamps pretty much ignored my existence–which in itself was strange because normally, they were interested in everything about me.
I warily stepped closer to the hall that had not even a single candle lit. I glanced over my shoulder at the stage where Lucien sat. He was chatting to another vamp, oblivious to my turmoil.
I stood at the entrance to the hall, shivered, and tried to squint through the darkness.
I flashed my wolf eyes to make sure there was nothing lurking, but the hall was empty.
Frowning, I stepped into the darkness. As soon as I did, I was sure a shadow moved ahead of me.
I tensed, my heart racing as I tried harder to see what it was. But it was as if nothing had moved at all.
I took another step and another shadow moved through the red vision of my wolf eyes.
“Kai?” I called, the sounds of the ballroom moving further away. This was the kind of bullshit he would pull.
There was a soft chuckle in the air, another shadow down the end of the hall.
“Derik?” I snapped, his scent filtering across my nose.
Something brushed my hair and I spun to it, expecting to see one of them there. But there was nothing.
“If this is a joke, it’s not funny.”
Another chuckle, a huskier one filled the hall and I swore it was Brax. But there was nothing there.
I couldn’t breathe properly, the taunting getting to me. Was it them? Or was it the vampires playing jokes?
