“She’s in the Quincey Group’s private hospital. I can bring you there to see her right now,” he replied, somewhat surprised that Danika agreed so quickly. He had been sure that Danika would make some requests.
Hearing his reply, Danika frowned.
“Is she not in Parrington Hospital?”
“No, she isn’t here. Private hospitals are better in many aspects. You would also have a higher chance of success should you operate there.”
Given that his private hospital had the most advanced equipment and provided the best conditions, there was no way he would allow Faye to stay in Parrington Hospital.
To his surprise, Danika shook her head and apologized, “I’m sorry, but I can’t operate on Miss Lawrence.”
“Why not?” Eustace asked. Just moments ago, she was obviously keen on operating.
Feeling a little helpless, Danika was about to explain when Eustace handed her a check, saying, “Money is not a problem.”
However, Danika barely glanced at it. Although the amount written on it could tempt anyone, she smiled and said, “That is a large sum of money, but money isn’t the solution to everything.”
“Then what do you want?” demanded Eustace, trying hard to keep his anger in check.
Was his offer too low?
“I don’t blame you for not understanding medical law, Mr. Quincey. However, I must inform you it prohibits me from practicing outside my place of registration, which happens to be Parrington Hospital, so…you understand, right?”
Usually, she would provide a shorter explanation. However, for the sake of her patient, she was willing to go to further lengths.
“So, you can’t perform the surgery in a private hospital?” he asked.
“Exactly.” Danika didn’t want to ruin her career for him. Eustace fell quiet. He had not expected such a regulation. “If there’s nothing else I can help you with, please allow me to excuse myself. But Mr. Quincey, please do make a decision soon.”
Seeing Eustace’s hesitation, Danika knew he didn’t want to transfer Faye to Parrington Hospital because he lacked faith in their facilities and services. Since that was the case, there was nothing she could do.
Soon, Danika disappeared from his line of sight. Vincent approached him, asking, “Did Dr. Zellweger agree to perform the surgery on Faye?”
Eustace shook his head. While she didn’t promise him she would do it, she didn’t refuse him either. Additionally, whether or not she could perform the surgery depended on him.
Unaware of what Eustace was thinking, he expressed his bewilderment. “These famous doctors are really weird.”
After all, even the Quincey Group’s president failed to convince her in person. It seemed that Dr. Zellweger was not an easy person to deal with.
With her spectacular first day, everyone in the hospital viewed her in a new, improved light the next day. Patients scheduled for surgeries were less reluctant to attend appointments when they discovered she would lead their operations.
Danika performed three operations in a day. While her coworkers seemed overwhelmed, she remained full of energy throughout the day, showing no signs of tiring.
“Any more surgeries today?” she asked Morgan, who was standing behind her.
“No more.” Morgan shook her head. The neurosurgery department of Parrington Hospital had not been doing very well, so there were few patients. However, she had a gut feeling that everything would change with Danika’s arrival.
“Dr. Zellweger, I’m sorry I looked down on you this morning. You are definitely the best neurosurgeon I have ever met,” said one of her team’s doctors. His eyes shone with admiration.
“You’re also the most hardworking doctor I’ve met,” added another doctor with a wry smile.
Smiling, Danika looked at them and said, “You’re tired already? I used to perform six operations a day from morning to night without a break.”
Hearing that, they gave her a thumbs up. Brain surgeries were notoriously long. In addition, there were many nerves present in the brain. Hence, neurosurgeons were required to be highly vigilant throughout the procedure. One operation was enough to exhaust them, let alone six. The other doctors were too afraid to imagine it.
“Now you all finally know how great Dr. Zellweger is,” said Morgan with a smug chuckle, proud that her idol’s abilities were finally recognized.
“Yeah, yeah, we know.”
“Okay, everyone. You all worked hard today, I’ll treat everyone in our department to a wonderful dinner tonight,” Danika promised them. It was about time she had dinner with her department personnel.
“There’s no need for that,” they replied, chuckling. “Our department’s director promised us a long time ago that he’ll treat us to a meal to welcome you.”
They were laughing and chatting as they headed towards the director’s office when a tall shadow suddenly loomed across them. When they raised their heads, they were shocked to see Eustace standing there.
Why was he here again?
Everyone turned to Danika. They had heard that he wanted her to perform surgery, which only fueled their admiration for her.
“Alright, everyone. See you at dinner tonight,” she said, facing them as if Eustace wasn’t standing in front of her.
Everyone slipped away quickly, and only Eustace and Danika were soon left in the corridor. Danika turned to look at him, saying, “You must have made up your mind since you’re here again, Mr. Quincey.”
Eustace nodded, saying, “I have transferred Faye here, and she is now in her ward. When will you be free to take a look?”
Danika nodded. As expected, Eustace was firm and swift in his decisions and left no room for procrastination.
“I can go now,” she replied. Since she had nothing to do now, it would be good for her to visit Faye. If she were going to operate on her, there would be a lot of preparations to do.
With that, the two of them walked toward Faye’s ward together. Danika didn’t say a word to Eustace along the way, as if he was invisible.
When Danika finally saw Faye, she seemed to be in serious condition. She looked pale and frail, too weak to withstand even a weak gust of wind. Faye raised her head when she heard them come in, and her eyes met those of the beautiful doctor.
“Eustace, who is she?”
“She is your chief surgeon, Dr. Zellweger.”
Faye was visibly shocked. She had not expected that her surgeon would be so young. She would have thought he was joking if she didn’t know Eustace well enough.
“Hi, Dr. Zellweger, thank you for agreeing to lead my surgery,” she said with a smile. Her face was devoid of color, as if she would faint any second.
Danika nodded and said, “I’ve read your medical records. Don’t worry too much. It’s not a big problem.”
“Real…Really?” she asked in disbelief. The doctors at the private hospital had more or less told her that she was about to die.
“I never joke,” she said with a proud smile. Clearly, she was very confident.
If she hadn’t divorced Eustace, she would probably still be living her retirement life, so she wouldn’t have had a chance to save Faye. Perhaps it was fate telling her that Faye deserved to live.
After a brief discussion about Faye’s condition, she and Eustace left the room. Only then did the smiles on their faces fade away, their solemn expressions returning.
“She should have had an operation earlier.”
“I know,” he admitted, nodding, “but I only just got wind of you.”
“I’m not the only one in this country who can perform this operation.”
