He stood taller than the others, his body in the best shape, but I was still worried.
Zachariah and Atticus sat on either side of me in the small wooden box we had been sat in up in one of the trees. Others sat in more of the boxes near the giant tree they used for vine swinging.
“The hunt will start, and the biggest kill will be our dinner. The smallest kill will be on patrol while we feast,” Dorian announced.
The warriors’ faces all hardened. I sucked in a breath as Dorian lowered his body like the start of a race.
His eyes narrowed on the forest. He changed; his entire demeanor moved into something lethal. Some women in the boxes cheered and whistled, calling out his name. They blew kisses and howled for their alpha.
It made my chest tight seeing him so worshiped by other women. Had he enjoyed them too? Was I taking away his chance to have one of them by choosing him?
I hadn’t considered those kinds of implications yet, but they were there now.
I stared down at him, nervous for him, but also kind of turned on. He was hot when he looked so dangerous.
He looked up at me, a smirk on his lips as he sniffed the air. His eyes fluttered closed, and he swallowed deeply.
“Your scent is driving him crazy,” Atticus chuckled.
“Oops.” I did not want to distract him.
“It’s not a bad thing, Little Red. It makes the wolf in him desperate to be the best–to show off for you.”
“Oh.” I let my attraction flood me.
His deep growl had everyone tensing, especially the pack. They looked nervous now. But Dorian grinned.
“Begin!” he roared, then took off so fast I barely saw him.
It didn’t take long.
Dorian was back within the hour with a giant elk that he dragged with him like it was a sack of flour.
He was covered in its blood, his chest puffed out as he dumped it down at the starting line.
As soon as he had, he climbed up the tree, forgoing the ladder. He was fast, using the strength in his well-trained muscles to haul him up to me. He jumped into the box and picked me up. I squealed as he did, laughing in surprise before he smothered my mouth with his.
I didn’t care that he was getting elk blood all over me; I just wanted him.
“Aren’t you worried they will find bigger?” Atticus interrupted in a gruff tone as other warriors started to make it back.
Dorian pulled away from me, scoffing at Atticus. “No. Or I wouldn’t have brought it back.”
“I sensed your jealousy, Sweet Siren. Are you worried about what you mean to me, hmm?” Dorian spoke to me, pushing my hair out of the way as the sounds of cheering and clapping surrounded us.
I shrugged. “I was just wondering if there was someone else I was stealing you from.”
He kissed me again. “All yours.” He smothered his own words with my mouth.
The hunt was over fast. The warriors’ kills didn’t even come close.
Dorian was announced victorious, and they all cheered for their alpha.
“Let’s get home so I can ravish you in peace,” Dorian grinned.
I liked the sound of that.
The kills were taken to the kitchens in the main hub for the banquet while we went back to Dorian’s.
But we had just crossed the bridge when the alphas grew tense.
Dorian sniffed the air, and I frowned. Something colder was in the air.
Even I sensed it. I shivered and moved closer between the three of them.
“There’s something following us.” Zachariah stepped forward, eyeing the forest with that calculated gaze.
Dorian sniffed the air. “Vampire.”
12. The Escort
“A siren in the dark. A siren in the shadows. Does she sing if she is dead?” A voice whispered around us, and I sucked in a breath. I knew that voice.
“Silas.” My voice was shaky as I pressed closer to Atticus. Dorian moved to watch our backs.
I looked through the trees; so did the alphas, but Silas wasn’t coming out.
A taunting chuckle echoed on the wind, and I shivered.
“A vampire who hides is a dead vampire,” Atticus growled.
Another chuckle was the only response. The air turned brisk, the forest darker as I waited for Silas to come out of the dark.
“You have something of mine, Alphas.”
“Find another human to torment, Silas,” Zachariah warned, his eyes flicking like they were following a shadow I couldn’t see.
“Kassandra Kane is not a human,” Silas strode forward out of the forest, his body as tall as he could make it, his presence intimidating me even when I was surrounded by my alphas.
I had been tortured by Silas’s hands too many times not to be wary of him. I had never seen anyone best him.
I didn’t know if the alphas could.
But they didn’t seem scared–only angry.
And they protected me. That was new. Something warm spread in my chest at the idea, and I leaned into it. It felt good.
“She is not yours either,” Dorian came to stand with Zachariah. Atticus’s arm was still around me, but I shook beneath him.
My voice. It all came back to that.
What if that was why the alphas wanted me too? They said it was my scent, the realm, and what they wanted, but what if that was a lie too? I wasn’t even sure they knew what I was. Just that I smelled different. I wasn’t about to be the one to confirm any suspicions when my voice had been used against me so many times before.
That warmth in my chest turned to ice, and I shivered.
“Have you heard her voice, Alphas? Because I have. And I bet I am one of the few. The second I did, I claimed her.” Silas was circling us slowly, his eyes roaming up and down me like I was a trophy he could take.
Atticus’s hold tightened on me. Dorian and Zachariah closed ranks.
“Leave our territory, Silas. You are trespassing.” Dorian was stern, stepping closer to Silas, who paused his circling.
“Hand the girl over and I will.”
Zachariah stepped forward, his teeth bared in warning. “She belongs to the alphas. Either you leave with your head attached or I remove it for you. Your choice, vampire.”
Silas’s gaze finally left mine, and he looked at Zach. Then Dorian. Then Atticus’s hold on me.
He took a deep breath in, sniffing the air. His eyes glowed red, and a grin spread across his face.
“Your scent has changed, Kassie. You gave yourself to these savages? And here I thought you were saving yourself for me.”
I scowled at him, “You were never going to have me that way. Ever.”
“Hmm. Never is a long time, Sweetheart. Do you know how long a vampire lives?” He was taunting me, and it was working.
Fear clawed at my chest, making it tight and fragile as I let out a shaky breath. But Silas had kept me prisoner for years, killed my family, tortured me. Now he had nothing but his words, and I couldn’t let them get to me.
So I steeled myself against the feelings he pushed through me and met his evil gaze, “As long as it takes me to order your head. Or maybe I’ll have my alphas remove your cock and make you gag on it so I never have to hear your poisonous words again.”
Silas’s brow raised, and he looked at the unmoving alphas that surrounded me. He chose the smart option–retreat.
“I will get to you again, Kassie, and you will pay for every minute you have escaped me. That’s a promise.” And then he was smoke, a shadow moving through the trees towards vampire territory.
I sucked in a breath as soon as he was gone and fell into Atticus, my strength giving way to my fear.
