“Ah! How dare you hit me!” It hurt so much that Liana was seeing stars. Her ears were ringing.
“I hit you because you deserve it!” Alyssa’s smile disappeared, and she began to tremble in fury. This slap is for the bracelet Grandpa gave me. What makes you think you can throw a tantrum and break my things?”
“Allison! You’ve crossed the line!” Jeremy growled.
He had noticed her red, swollen wrist when she raised her hand. As her skin was delicate, any minor injury was obvious.
However, he was so angry that he didn’t consider any of that. He only glared at her.
Meanwhile, Betty and the Kirkman sisters never expected Alyssa would behave so arrogantly in front of Jeremy.
Alyssa remained unfazed by Sophia’s hypocritical behavior. She had divulged that information to tell Mandy that Alyssa was not only used but also a gold digger from a rural village.
Rosaline and Liana were secretly delighted.
The Taylors and the Walshs were at odds. Jonah was Winston’s eldest son and held a prestigious status. There was no woman out of his reach.
How could he possibly want a woman the Walshs had abandoned? It was funny to even think about it.
Jeremy frowned in displeasure. “That’s personal. You have no right to discuss it.”
“Jeremy, it may be personal, but it concerns the Walshs and the Taylors. I’m just trying to prevent any potential shock when people find out that your ex–wife is here. I’m doing this for everyone’s saké!” Sophia continued to fuss.
“Does it concern both families? Didn’t Ms. Burton divorce Mr. Walsh? Divorce means no ties anymore. So why do you think that Ms. Burton is affecting your family?” Mandy asked with a sneer. “Did she sign a contract when she became a part of your family? Will she still be a part of your family even after death?
“Ms. Burton found happiness with Jonah. There’s nothing shameful about it. Just because she divorced doesn’t mean my family won’t accept her. Come on, it’s the 21st century. Mrs.
Walsh, you should be more open–minded. Don’t get all riled up for nothing.”
Landon almost cheered as he found Mandy’s words so satisfying to hear. Betty and the Gardners were shocked and speechless. They stood there in embarrassment.
Why did Mandy seem like a lioness protecting her cub?
“Mrs. Taylor, you also hail from a noble family, so you must understand what I mean!”
Sophia pleaded, but she received no response.
Flushing red in embarrassment and anxiety, she continued, “Right after Ms. Burton left Jeremy, she immediately got together with Mr. Taylor. If words of it get out, people might think they had an improper relationship while she was still married. It’s so embarrassing! Shouldn’t you think on behalf of your son? After all, you’re the lady of the Taylor family.”
“Enough!” Mandy lifted a hand. It was all it took to make Sophia stop.
“This is the private matter of our children. While I may be older than them, I’m not Jonah’s mother. So I have no right to intervene. Mrs. Walsh, you are not Mr. Walsh’s biological mother, either Don’t you think it’s unbecoming of an older family member to speak of these things in Sophia was rendered speechless.
“Yes, Winston is indeed my man,” Mandy said firmly. “But I don’t want to hear you say that I am the lady of the Taylor family again.
Mandy’s stern warning frightened Sophia. And her face turned pale as a ghost. She stood there as stiff as an ice sculpture.
Alyssa chewed on her lips. She tried to swallow the lump in her throat.
There was only one lady of the Taylor family–her mother.
Jeremy pursed his lips, and her stare wavered. He didn’t like Allison. Their relationship was nothing but a paper record. Besides, she had brought him many unhappy moments by provoking him on things he was sensitive about.
Strangely, when Sophia taunted Allison, he felt like his dignity was being rubbed on the ground. He was experiencing empathy for her that he couldn’t begin to comprehend.
“Ms. Burton, are you looking for Jonah? Shall I accompany you?” Mandy asked gently as her gaze returned to Alyssa.
“Thank you, Mrs. Taylor. I appreciate it,” Alyssa replied with a gentle and obedient smile of a well- behaved young lady.
“Such a polite and beautiful child,” Mandy said loud and clear. She held Alyssa’s hand.
“Jonah’s made a wise choice in choosing you as his girlfriend.”
“Wait.”
For some reason, the conversation irritated Jeremy. Sternly, he asked, “Ms. Burton, don’t you owe Liana an apology?”
Landon sighed helplessly, resisting the urge to stuff his socks into Jeremy’s mouth.
A dull pain throbbed in Alyssa’s heart. She turned around to cast him a blank stare.
Her disappointed gaze pierced Jeremy’s soul.
“She didn’t do it! Allison didn’t do it!”
Just at that moment, a sweet, gentle voice cut through the air. It arrived unannounced, like lightning on a clear day, foiling the plot that had been carefully planted.
When Alyssa turned her gaze toward the source of the voice, there was a glimmer in her eyes.
“Lauren!”
A girl clad in a simple white dress was hurrying toward them. She was sporting a ridiculous crown of dense curls, which was Betty’s doing.
Lauren had always been Betty’s imaginary enemy in their family. Betty envied her little sister’s beauty. She always looked for new ways to bully her.
Whenever they appeared in public, she would try to make her sister look bad. She was afraid that her sister would steal her limelight.
Lauren, on the other hand, was autistic. As a result, she was relatively introverted and timid. In the presence of strangers, her shoulders were always hunched, and she was always silent.
Little did anyone know, for the three years that Alyssa was part of the Walshs, Lauren was the only one, aside from Mrs. Rosie, who treated Alyssa kindly. The only one who cared for Alyssa was Lauren, whom the rest of the family generally ignored.
After Alyssa left the Walshs, she always worried about Lauren. To her surprise, they met that day, and it delighted her.
“Silly girl, why are you talking nonsense?” Betty glared fiercely at her sister. “No one was in the bathroom except Liana and her. If it wasn’t her, then who else could it be?”
“N–No, it wasn’t Allison! It wasn’t her!” Lauren pleaded desperately. Her words were an incoherent.
jumble.
“Lauren, this is none of your business. Go play somewhere else!” Sophia was wearing an ugly Lauren clenched her tiny fists and walked up to Jeremy. She looked up at his tall, looming figure nervously.
“Jeremy! It wasn’t Allison who did it!”.
“Lauren, why do you say so?” Jeremy’s tone was unusually gentle.
“I saw it! 1–I was in the bathroom too! I saw it!”
Everyone was shocked by the revelation.
Liana’s face paled.
Even Alyssa was stunned. She never expected that Lauren was also present when Liana confronted her.
“I saw Ms. Gardner coming into the toilet to argue with Allison. Allison wanted to leave. But Ms. Gardner stopped her. She pulled Allison and snatched her bracelet away. Then… then the bracelet broke, and then… then Ms. Gardner started yelling and ran out. Allison didn’t touch Ms. Gardner! I saw it!”
