Bryce thought about waking Natalie up but instead just looked at her sleeping. Perhaps he didn’t want to ruin this rare moment of serenity.
Then, ignoring those feelings, he walked over and gently picked Natalie up in his arms. As soon as he touched her, she opened her eyes. They looked at each other.
After a moment, Natalie said, “What are you doing? Put me down!” Reflexively, Bryce let go of her. Natalie bounced on the sofa as she landed, grimacing in pain.
“Ouch!,” she exclaimed, sitting up and folding her arms, glaring at Bryce. “Bryce, you’re too much. You just threw me down like a wrestler,” she said snappily.
He scoffed, “It was you who told me to let go. I thought you’d be grateful if I did as you asked.” She retorted, “Who asked you to carry me anywhere anyway? It’s the middle of the night, for goodness’ sake. What were you plotting?”
“Plotting?,” snapped Bryce. “This is my house. You are my wife in name. So how is it I’m plotting against you?” It struck him suddenly that this was actually pretty funny. He held the joke in his heart. Natalie had no reply for him. She could only glare at him, rubbing her arm where she’d bumped on the edge of the sofa.
After a while, when she saw that Bryce had no intention of leaving, she asked, “So why are you still awake this late anyway?”
“I’m hungry,” said Bryce. “I’m going downstairs to look for something to eat.”
“Oh, I see,” Natalie nodded. He ignored her and went to the kitchen by himself. Not long after, he came back with a bottle of water and started to drink it.
Natalie puzzledly asked, “Is that all you’re going to have? Can’t you fix yourself up just by drinking water?” Bryce looked at her with amusement. “There’s nothing else in the fridge. What do you suggest?” She shrugged, then she got up and went to the kitchen herself.
While she was there, she kept thinking that Bryce seemed a little strange today. Although she couldn’t put her finger on what was odd about him, there was definitely something.
For one thing, he had become less cold in his manner and somehow more human. A short time later, Natalie emerged from the kitchen carrying two plates of pasta with sauce and a couple of forks.
She put one down in front of Bryce and said, “Have some,” before starting on her own plate. As the fragrance of the pasta sauce permeated the air, Bryce heard his stomach growl. He picked up a fork and started to eat.
After the first bite, he nodded appreciatively, saying, “This is really good. Thank you.” Praise like this from him was rare.
Natalie shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly, saying, “How am I going to raise a child if I can’t cook? I spent my time abroad learning everything I could, cooking included.” Although Bryce couldn’t guess exactly how she had lived when she was abroad, he knew that it wasn’t easy for a woman to bring up a child alone in such circumstances. He lowered his eyes and didn’t say anything.
To change the subject, he asked, “How’s your work these days?” Natalie’s enthusiasm sparked at the mention of her job. She described what she had been working on that evening and gave a brief outline of the plan she had made. She concluded by saying, “I think this will definitely work.”
Bryce took the papers she’d been talking about and looked at them. Only then did he realize that Natalie’s plan was very mature. His expression revealed his admiration.
“Not bad,” he said. “Not bad at all,” he thought. “If I gave some more artists to Natalie, she might really be able to help them hit the heights of their profession.”
Thinking about it, Bryce said, “Let me tell you something. Maybe there’s an opportunity I can point you towards. Recently, I’ve heard that Bernie Rosoff is looking for an actor to star when he directs ‘Crossing 2.’ This could be an opening for you and your new actor guy, huh?”
Natalie asked with excitement, “Is that true?” Bryce nodded. “Of course, but this is privileged information for you at this stage. There’ll be an official announcement about the movie in the next few days.”
She could barely hide her excitement and said, “Thank you! You’re wonderful!” Before putting down her plate and running off to start putting together a proposal for Bernie Rosoff.
Bryce watched her go and suddenly felt a sense of affection in his heart. Natalie went to her room and lay on the bed. She looked out the window at the moonlight, feeling exceptionally happy. Then she closed her eyes and began to make plans for Tony Babel’s role in ‘Crossing 2.’
The next morning, she woke up feeling refreshed. After breakfast, she and Bryce sent Liam to school. Later, on the way to her office, she thought about how she would communicate her plan to Tony.
To Natalie’s surprise, she found that Tony had arrived at the office before her. He was full of energy, with the medical expenses paid for. Tony saw her as his greatest benefactor and he was full of goodwill. Looking at his high-spirited expression, Natalie felt gratified.
She asked, “By the way, did the hospital tell you when the surgery would start?” Tony said, “In a week, maybe.” She nodded thoughtfully. “If Gina’s operation could be completed as soon as possible, Tony could devote himself wholeheartedly to his work.”
Natalie said, “I understand. If there’s anything you need my help with in the meantime, just ask. Okay? There’s no need for formality between us.” Tony was even more touched after hearing that.
He was almost unable to express his gratitude to Natalie but he said, “You’ve already given me such a huge sum of money. I’ve never in my life thought of meeting a benefactor like you. I’m really grateful. I definitely won’t let you down.”
