In the room, Noah sat on the couch, tightly gripping River’s phone. He couldn’t help but think how manipulative she was to purposely leave her phone in his car.
After a brief moment of silence, he suddenly stood up and walked over to the window. His gaze fell upon the falling snow, and his expression turned grim.
The north was experiencing a snowstorm, with temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Celsius. It would be challenging for anyone to navigate the harsh conditions, let alone endure the strong winds and snow.
Noah pursed his lips in concern and, feeling irritable, pulled out his phone to call Reuben.
“Bring someone to find River on Mount Pilgrim in the north,” he instructed.
Reuben was taken aback. ‘Mr. De Marco left Ms. Healy on Mount Pilgrim?!”
He quickly responded. “I’ll get to it right away, Mr. De Marco!”
At 1 a.m., Reuben found River buried under a thick layer of snow. Fortunately, she was still alive. He quickly brought her to Villa Rosa, where Noah was waiting in the living room.
Noah’s heart squeezed when he saw Reuben carrying the pale River inside. Panic was evident in Reuben’s voice as he spoke. “Mr. De Marco! We don’t know how long Ms. Healy was buried in snow. Her body temperature is dangerously low.”
Fear flickered in Noah’s eyes as he hurriedly approached to take her in his arms. When he touched her hands, he could feel how icy cold they were. Panic overwhelming him, he rushed upstairs, urging, “Bring Lily here and call the doctor!”
In the room, Noah removed River’s wet coat and wrapped her in a blanket. Lily was taken aback when she entered the room. “Sir, Ms. Healy…”
Noah’s voice boomed, cutting her off. “Fetch hot water to wipe her body!”
Lily quickly obeyed his orders, her mind racing. If Noah hadn’t explicitly stated otherwise, she would have thought that River was already dead. Her face was so pale, resembling that of a lifeless person.
As the hot water was brought, Noah snatched the towel from Lily’s hands and began wiping
River’s body. He meticulously wiped from her head to her toes, repeating the process again and again until the doctor arrived.
The doctor let out a sigh after examining River. “Mr. De Marco, Ms. Healy’s body has always been on the weak side. Given the severity of this cold, it will be challenging to nurse her back to full health.”
Noah’s frustration boiled over, and he snapped at the doctor. “Did I call you here just to hear this?!”
The doctor was taken aback by Noah’s outburst but quickly composed himself. “I apologize, Mr.
De Marco. I will provide you with a list of foods that Ms. Healy should consume to aid in her
Noah’s jaw clenched unusually hard as he continued rubbing River’s cold hands with his palms. Regret consumed him as he looked at the woman who lay so still, almost as if she were dead. Why had he left her there? Regardless of her mistakes, he shouldn’t have abandoned her alone.
Three days later, River woke up in a daze. As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw the man sitting on the nearby couch. Stubble adorned his chin, and his hair was disheveled. Dark circles under his eyes betrayed his lack of sleep, and weariness marked his gaze. She quickly averted her gaze and closed her eyes once more.
He brought her back?
She really couldn’t bear his way of tormenting her and then trying to make it up to her.
River wearily shifted her body, turning away from Noah. The mere sight of him was enough to make her wish she could disappear from the face of the earth.
Her movement caught the attention of the man who had been engrossed in a document. He looked up, rose swiftly from his seat, and approached the bed. His lips moved, but no words came out. After a moment, he turned to exit the room and called for Lily.
Lily hurried in, carrying food, and addressed River. “Ms. Healy?”
River slowly opened her eyes and responded with a flat tone. “Mm.”
“I’m glad you’re awake. You should sit up and have some soup. You’ve been on drips for days, so your stomach might be upset.”
River was taken aback and turned to look at Lily. “How long was I unconscious?”
“Three days, and sir hasn’t slept for three days either. He’s been using hot towels to clean your body every hour.”
“Don’t mention him.”
River interrupted Lily, her eyes devoid of emotion. “I don’t want to hear about him or see him.”
Lily had heard a little something from Reuben about why River was out for the past few days.
She knew very well why River came back. But she had promised River to keep it a secret.
Feeling the weight of River’s cold gaze, Lily sighed inwardly.
“Alright, I won’t mention him. Can you sit tup and have some soup?”
River furrowed her brow. Who checked on my condition?”
“The doctor. He said you need to focus on recovering your health. ”
River felt a sense of relief upon hearing that
We were still unaware.
And she felt no discomfort in her abdomen, assuring her that her babies were doing well.
With Lily’s assistance, she managed to sit up.
Only after slowly sipping the soup did she recline again.
“Ms. Healy, I beg you not to leave, okay? This illness will linger if you don’t take it seriously ”
River responded softly. “I understand.”
For the sake of her babies, she had to regain her health.
However, she had left her laptop in her rental house in Redwood Neighborhood. The submission deadline was approaching.
After a brief pause, she spoke up. “Lily, I’ll give you the passcode to my house. Could you get my laptop for me?”
Lily nodded. “Of course, just send me the location. I’ll get it for you.”
After Lily left, she reached for her phone on the bedside table and checked it.
Paige had sent her over a hundred messages and called her numerous times.
[Something happened, Paige. I can’t send you the reader now.] She replied.
[I almost had a heart attack when the boss answered my call. How are you feeling? Are you still at Villa Rosa?] Paige replied promptly.
[Much better. If you have time, you can drop by, and I’ll pass you the thing.] She texted back.
[I’ll come by after work. There are two things I need to tell you. First, they replaced everyone in the secretary’s office. Second, Daniella is actually a Xander! It’s going to be tough to get revenge on her with the Xanders backing her up.]
She couldn’t believe that Daniella was truly a Xander.
But it didn’t matter.
Even if she had to sacrifice everything, she wouldn’t let that scheming bitch live happily ever after!
However, why were all the secretaries replaced?
Could it be that Noah also suspected the other secretaries?
Secretaries…
She furrowed her brow, feeling like she had forgotten something.
This might be connected to the young secretary!
She appeared out of nowhere and asked her to come to the office.
The day she went, the company’s confidential information was stolen.
After giving it some thought, she replied to Paige.
[Paige, can you investigate someone for me?]
[Who?]
[Cecilia Ford, the young secretary I used to mentor…]
Paige immediately called her as soon as she mentioned her suspicion.
She began complaining the moment she picked up the call. “River! Is this your pregnant brain talking again?! That person is clearly colluding with Daniella! Damn it. Just you wait, I’ll have someone follow her. I’ll make sure justice is served for you!”
River couldn’t help but smile. “Sure, thank you.”
As soon as she hung up with Paige, another call came in.
Neil’s name appeared on the screen.
River picked up the call reluctantly. “What is it, Mr. Xander?”
“Where are you, River?” Neil’s voice sounded weary.
“Just get to the point, Mr. Xander,” she replied calmly.
