In between
Ashlyn
I heard a voice calling my name, causing me to open my eyes. But all I could see was black.
“Wake up, Ashlyn.” The voice said.
“Mother?” I asked the empty abyss.
“Yes, Ashlyn.” She answered. Great, I fucken died again. Mason will never let me leave our room.
“You are not dead, my daughter. But you really need to stop ending up here.” She giggled.
“And where is here?” I asked her.
“You’re in the in between,” She answered. I wish I could see her.
“What am I doing here?” I asked.
“The toxin running through your system is from the puffer fish. The vampires use it like a drug. But it slows down our healing and causes us great pain.” She told me.
“Is that what you came here to tell me? That vampires are involved?” I asked her.
“You will find someone very important tomorrow, and I hope you can understand why I never told you. I hope you can forgive me, my Ashlyn. I love you so much.” She said.
“Mother, what are you talking about?” I begged her to answer.
“Good bye my Ashlyn.” Her voice faded. I started falling into the darkness, yelling at her. Shaking awake, I was now staring into a bright light. I tried to breathe, but I couldn’t. I could feel my panic rising until someone spoke to me.
“Ashlyn, calm down. You are okay, but you are in surgery. We need to take the tube out of your throat, but you need to calm down. Nod your head if you understand?” They said, and I nodded.
While they were working on getting the tube out, I could hear people talking around me. They were confused about how I was awake and I was even confused. How the hell did I even get here? Last thing I remembered was, Liam! I needed to find Liam.
The tube was finally removed, and I took a deep breath. My entire body was on fire. And the pain in my abdomen was unbearable, but I needed to know if Liam was okay.
“Liam.” I gasped out.
“What?” The same person who took the tube out leaned in.
“Find Gamma Liam.” I whispered before I screamed out in pain. I could hear loud beeping and someone yelling commands.
“Why isn’t she healing?” I heard one yell.
“She should be healing?” Another demanded.
“Puffer.” I gasped out.
“What did she say?” Someone asked the person beside me.
“Puffer, sir,” they answered.
“Fuck! We need an antitoxin in here now!” he commanded. I screamed out in pain again. I wasn’t sure how much more of this I could actually take.
“We need to sedate her now!” someone yelled.
“Find Liam.” I whispered before the darkness took me again.
Mason
After I walked through the portal, we were standing in the parking lot of the hospital. The ambulance was just arriving and there were staff members on standby, waiting for the medics to unload Ashlyn. They all rushed in and I ran in behind them. But one doctor stopped me.
“Alpha Prince Mason, take a seat and someone will be with you when we have more information.” He told me before following the others into the OR.
I was pulling my hair and pacing the length of the hallway in front of the OR doors. What the hell actually happened? I looked around for Liam so I could ask him, but I didn’t see him.
“Where’s Liam?” I asked Brandon.
“I don’t know. He said he’d meet us here.” Brandon told me, and I let out a loud growl. If he had anything to do with this, I’d kill him myself.
“Mason, calm down. We don’t know what happened. And I don’t think Liam would ever hurt Ashlyn.” Derek said. And I growled in frustration.
“This is not a time to be calm!” I yelled at Derek.
“You think I’m calm? Magnus is ready to shift and burn this whole place to the ground. I’m trying to hold him together and you are not helping! You aren’t the only one who loves her!” He yelled back.
“Enough, both of you!” Sage yelled at us.
“Sage is right. This isn’t helping. We are all worried about her.” Brandon said calmly. There’s a reason he’s my beta; he’s the calm to my storm.
It felt like forever before a doctor came out to speak to us. We were all seated in the waiting room now. We stood up, and the doctor greeted us.
“Prince Mason, Miss. Knight is being stitched up as we speak. She woke up during surgery…” he started to say until I interrupted him.
“What?” I yelled, and Derek grabbed my arm.
“Let him finish!” Derek growled.
“Miss. Knight woke up during surgery. We are not even sure how she was able to. She asked us to find Gamma Liam.” He explained.
“I’m going to fucken kill him.” I growled out, my aura slipping out, forcing everyone to feel my wrath.
“Mason, calm the fuck down. She could have been concerned about him.” Derek growled, and I pulled my aura back so the doctor could finish speaking.
“Did she say anything else?” Sage asked.
“She did. They coated the knife with a puffer fish toxin. I wouldn’t have known that’s why she wasn’t healing if she hadn’t had told me. I administered an antitoxin, and we stitched everything up. Her healing may be slow to start as the anti-toxin counters the toxin, but she should be okay in a few hours.” He told us.
“Why would someone do that?” I asked.
“In the vampire community, it’s used as a party drug, but for a werewolf, it’s deadly. It slows our healing and causes extreme pain,” he answered.
“Can we see her?” Derek asked.
“As soon as she’s moved, I’ll have a nurse show you to her room. And Prince Mason, I would really like to see your mate under better circumstances in the future.” He bowed and left the waiting room. I forgot he was the doctor that treated Ashlyn before.
“What the fuck was that about?” Derek asked me while we all sat down to wait again.
