There was a brief pause before he spoke again. “I don’t think Daniella is my sister.”
“What does that have to do with me?” she asked, her tone composed.
“Are you still at Villa Rosa?” Neil inquired.
“Yes.”
“River, would you be willing to take a DNA test with me?”
“Mr. Xander, didn’t you already do that with Daniella? If you did, and she is your sister, why are you involving me? So people can mock me?” There was a hint of frustration in her voice.
Neil’s voice resonated with helplessness. “I don’t believe it. But it’s fine if you don’t want to go through with it. I’ll continue my investigation.”
She felt perplexed. She couldn’t fathom why he was so stubborn.
How could the Xanders be careless in verifying their own family members?
If it had already been confirmed, why was he still denying it?
She responded dismissively, her words lacking conviction. “I can’t stop you from doing what you want, Mr. Xander, so you don’t have to inform me about it.
“In any case, I’m glad you still remember our agreement. I’ll hang up if there’s nothing else.”
“…Alright.”
River closed her eyes wearily after ending the call.
She could already envision how arrogant Daniella would act in front of her.
All she could do was hope that the information she had obtained from Daniella’s phone would prove useful.
In the evening, Paige arrived at Villa Rosa and was led upstairs by Lily
As soon as she entered the room, she rushed to River. “River, you look like a worn–out mess!”
River instinctively touched her face. “I haven’t seen myself in the mirror.”
Paige settled down by the bed and surveyed the room. “Wow, this must be the boss’s room?”
River nodded. “Yes.”
“It’s suffocating in here! It’s a wonder that you don’t go crazy!” Paige exclaimed, bewildered. ”
Everything is black, except for the gray walls.”
River didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh. She reached under her pillow, retrieved the reader, and handed it to Paige.
“How soon can you retrieve the data?”
Paige swiftly tucked it into her pocket. “Tonight. My friend said he can get it within three hours.”
River nodded. “I hope the data proves useful this time.”
“Forget about the data!” Paige glanced at the door and lowered her voice. “You asked me to investigate Cecília. I have some news! Her grandmother is in the hospital. I had my friend inquire about it.
“Guess what? She recently paid a medical fee of 5,000 dollars. Normally, she would only pay less than 500 dollars at a time.”
River hadn’t expected Paige to gather the information so quickly.
She looked down and said, “It seems my instincts were right. She was colluding with someone to plot against me.”
“So there’s definitely a bank transfer record in Daniella’s phone!”
“I’ll text you tonight. Let’s wait for her to finally get the punishment she deserves!”
River felt a mix of emotions.
She sensed that things might not be as straightforward as they seemed.
However, she had obtained the evidence. What could possibly go wrong?
She couldn’t figure it out. Perhaps her recent chaotic life had made her overly suspicious.
She nodded. “Alright, please…”
Before she could finish her sentence, the door suddenly swung open.
Daniella appeared, wearing a smug expression as she glanced disdainfully at River in bed and Paige next to her
“I was wondering why there was a car parked downstairs. So, I see we have an uninvited guest.
Paige immediately stood up. “What? You thought a man came? Were you trying to catch a lover in the act?”
Daniella’s resentment surged, and her expression quickly changed. “What does it have to do with you? Who are you to criticize me here?”
Paige fired back, undeterred. “I’m not as shameless as you. Despite being with Mr. De Marco, you still hooked up with another man.”
Daniella shot a fierce glare at Paige. “You better shut the fuck up! I’ll give you a tight slap if you don’t shut up.”
Unfazed, Paige raised her chin calmly. “Go ahead. I’m right here. Let’s see who ends up being slapped. I can’t believe the Xanders are blind enough to accept a deceitful woman like you as their family. You’re cunning and scheming. Nobody knows if you tampered with the DNA test report.
Daniella trembled with anger. “You! Cut the crap!”
Paige retorted, “Oh, look at how desperate you’ve become. I was right! You’re a phony!”
River’s head throbbed from their argument. “Paige, let’s not argue with her. It’s pointless.”
Paige acquiesced. “Fine, I’ll listen to you. Arguing with a fool will only make me a fool.”
With that, she grabbed her bag. “I’m leaving. I’ll text you.”
River nodded and watched Paige leave the room.
Then, her gaze fell on Daniella, whose face was livid with rage.
River spoke coldly, “Is there anything else?”
Daniella sneered, “River, you’re just a nobody to me. You better know your place, or my grandpa won’t let a homewrecker like you off the hook.”
River smirked. “Please ask your grandpa to deal with Noah first.”
Enraged, Daniella lunged toward River, raising her hand to slap her.
But before she could make contact, someone intervened and tried to stop her at the door.
”
“Ms. Love!” Lily called out urgently, blocking Daniella’s path. She then stepped forward, standing protectively in front of River. “Ms. Love, Mr. De Marco will be furious if you do this.”
Daniella glared fiercely at Lily before delivering a slap to her face. The sound echoed through the room, causing River’s eyes to widen in shock.
In an instant, a vivid memory flashed in River’s mind–a scene where her mother was berated and humiliated by others.
Anger surged within her.
Daniella continued to assert her dominance, interrogating Lily. “Have you forgotten how you should address me?”
Lily held her face, her eyes turning scarlet as she hastily apologized. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Ms. Love. It’s my fault…”
River interjected forcefully, “You did nothing wrong!”
She pushed the blanket aside and dragged her weary body out of bed. Stepping forward, she approached Daniella with a cold expression. “Apologize to Lily!”
Daniella was taken aback by River’s icy and stern gaze, taking a couple of steps back in slight fear.
“Do you expect me to apologize? Dream on!”
In a swift motion, River extended her hand, gripping Daniella’s long hair tightly. With great force, she made Daniella bend over, eliciting a scream of pain.
River’s eyes burned with deep anger. “I’ll ask you again. Are you going to apologize?”
“No, I won’t. River, how dare you do this to me! My grandpa won’t let you get away with it! Ah…”
River firmly grasped Daniella’s long hair and forcefully slammed her to the floor. She then swiftly straddled Daniella’s body and delivered a series of slaps.
“I told you to apologize. Now!”
River continued to slap her, unable to contain her rage. In the midst of it, Lily rushed forward, pleading desperately.
“Ms. Healy, stop slapping her, please.”
However, something seemed to possess River, preventing her from stopping. She couldn’t control herself. After repeatedly slapping Daniella, a sudden angry roar from behind broke through the chaos.
“River!”
River abruptly halted, a moment of clarity washing over her.
