He wanted to leave, but Marigold didn’t allow it. “No! Together!”
“Stop fooling around!” Gilbert looked at her seriously. He didn’t want Marigold to get into trouble with him.
However, Marigold was very firm. “I’m not fooling around.”
She was right. She was not fooling around. She had never been this serious before. If they were not in an inappropriate place at that moment, Gilbert probably would not be able to hold himself back and hug her.
He didn’t force her. He just protected her even more.
“Watch out!”
A shot was fired, then Marigold could be heard shouting. She rushed forward and stood in front of Gilbert.
Another loud bang came-another shot!
At that moment, Gilbert felt the world turned black and white, and his heart was pounding like mad. It was as if he was about to lose something important.
Gilbert and Marigold (48)
Gilbert’s heart almost stopped as Marigold groaned in pain.
“You-” Gilbert did not even know what to say. At that moment, he felt furious and was also in indescribable pain. However, he was feeling more worried.
He held Marigold tightly, afraid she would slip away from his arms.
Marigold could sense his nervousness as well. With a slight embarrassment, she said, “I’m fine. It just grazed me a little.”
Yes, she was grazed by the bullet. Perhaps it was too dark, but the person who fired the shot missed.
Gilbert let out a sigh of relief when he heard that. What came after was rage. “Who asked you to take a bullet for me? Do you not want to live anymore?”
If the shooter didn’t have a bad aim, Gilbert didn’t even dare to think if Marigold could live or not.
“I didn’t think that much.” At that time, she was only thinking of not letting Gilbert get shot. She truly didn’t consider too much about whether she would live or die.
Gilbert looked at her. He could not see her expression clearly in the night, but he still felt touched. He immediately picked her up and continued hiding.
‘I’m fine. Put me down. I can walk by myself…”
“Shut up!* Gilbert was very pissed at that moment. However, it was not the time to reprimand Marigold. No matter what, he had to first confirm that they were safe.
Danika’s men came right in time. Eustace was with Danika, so both of them rushed over together. The gunmen were subdued very quickly. A few of them died, but a few were caught. Danika walked to them and saw Gilbert hugging Marigold. She was a little worried. “Did you get hurt?”
She had already called for an ambulance when she came, so it should arrive soon.
“I’m fine-‘
“She’s injured.” Gilbert cut Marigold off and ignored what she wanted to say.
Marigold was speechless. She could only look at Danika helplessly, hoping Danika could talk some sense into Gilbert or at least make him put her down. It was very embarrassing to be carried like that.
However, Danika didn’t have the intention to help her at all. She felt it was quite good for Gilbert to carry Marigold in his arms. That was enough to prove that he cared about Marigold.
Soon, the ambulance arrived. Gilbert then carried Marigold to the ambulance.
Before they got in, he looked at the few people who were caught. “I want to know who’s behind this.”
“Don’t worry, Gilbert. Leave it to me.” Danika’s gaze turned cold as she looked at those few people. How dare they attack Gilbert! They were simply looking down at her.
Gilbert didn’t need the Zellwegers’ help, but everybody in Bardoff City knew Danika and Gilbert’s relationship. Attacking Gilbert meant that they were going against her and the Water family.
“I want to take care of it myself. You just have to help me find out who’s behind it.” Gilbert knew Danika would help him, but he did not want that. He wanted to take care of his own business himself.
Besides, he actually could already figure out parts of it.
In fact, there were not that many people who would attack him.
It was the Bradshaw family…
Gilbert sneered in secret. Were they preparing to get rid of him because they saw he was not planning to return? What an unusual tactic they had taken.
Gilbert brought Marigold into the ambulance and left. Danika and Eustace stayed behind to handle the rest of the matter.
Marigold sat on the stretcher in the ambulance while the doctor treated the injury on her arm. She was not severely injured, but Gilbert looked extremely sullen when he saw Marigold bleeding.
“Alright. Keep your arm away from water for a few days and rest,” the doctor instructed. There was no need for her to go to the hospital at all.
When they got to the hospital, Gilbert insisted on letting Marigold have a comprehensive health checkup. Marigold was helpless, but she could only do as he said. She could tell that Gilbert was very upset. She felt it was better for her to just go along with him at a moment like this.
Gilbert and Marigold (49)
After they returned to the villa, Gilbert brought Marigold back to the room. However, he had no intention of leaving. That made Marigold feel awkward as he did not know what he wanted.
“It’s getting late. You should go back and rest.’ Marigold had no choice but to be the first to speak. She couldn’t let Gilbert stay by her side in the room.
Gilbert didn’t leave. He looked at her and asked, “The doctor said you are not to get your arm wet, so how are you going to shower?”
Marigold couldn’t believe what she had heard. “HI just skip showering today.” Marigold let out a forced laugh. She was a little not used to discussing this kind of topic with him.
“If you want to take a shower, I can help,” Gilbert offered. He even said it very seriously.
Marigold strongly suspected she had heard it wrong. What did he say? He could help?
As if he was afraid she would misunderstand, Gilbert quickly said, “I can ask the maid to come and help you take a shower.”
“No need for that. It’s not a big deal to not shower for a day.” She was not that bad of a clean freak.
Seeing that she was insistent, Gilbert didn’t push her anymore. “Take a good rest. Call me if you need anything.”
“Alright. You have a good rest too.” Seeing that he was finally about to leave, Marigold felt relieved. She would not be able to take it anymore if he had stayed any longer.
What she needed at that moment was peace and quiet. She needed to process what happened that night properly, especially Gilbert’s attitude. What exactly did he mean?
Soon, Gilbert left the room. However, he didn’t return to his room to rest. Instead, he went to the study. The concern on his face immediately disappeared. He became incomparably indifferent. He took out his phone and saw the message Danika had just sent to him. She was very efficient and had found out who was behind the group of killers.
It was Eli.
Gilbert knew Eli was his younger brother by blood, but for some reason, he had no impression of him at all. However, Gilbert didn’t care about that. He only knew that Eli had poked the bear.
Gilbert originally did not want to get too involved with the Bradshaws. However, it was clear that he could not do that anymore. Since the Bradshaws wanted him to return so badly, he would do as they wished! However, would they truly be able to accept the consequences?
He made up his mind. That night, Esther received a message from him, saying that he was willing to return to the Bradshaw family.
Esther was thrilled. She had not seen Gilbert for many years, but he was still her son, after all. He was capable and powerful. If Gilbert were to take over Bradshaw Operations, the rest of the Bradshaws probably would not have anything against it.
However, Esther was not a fool either. Something must be up for Gilbert to agree so suddenly. She would not believe him so easily. Deliberation was always needed for everything. Nevertheless, it was still a good outcome for her, no matter what.
The next day, Octavius and Eli learned that Gilbert was returning to the Bradshaw family. Octavius didn’t have any reaction. If this had happened in the past, he might be as happy as Esther. However, he knew very clearly that Gilbert would not really want to return to the family. He must have his motive for doing so.
Eli, on the other hand, said nothing. However, his mind was extremely twisted.
His men had failed yesterday night, and some were captured. He was afraid that those people had already given him away. If they had confessed, the reason Gilbert suddenly decided to return was worth pondering over.
He was worried that Gilbert was coming after him. However, no matter how much he worried about it, he couldn’t tell anyone. Otherwise, Esther would know he had attacked Gilbert, and she certainly would not let him off the hook.
Also, he did not want to make Esther disappointed.
He was troubled and had no idea what to do for a moment.
Gilbert and Marigold (50)
Marigold had quite a good sleep at Gilbert’s villa that night. She was not affected by what happened the night before.
When she got downstairs after she woke up, Gilbert was already sitting in the living room. When he saw her coming down the stairs, he got up and came to her. “Are you feeling unwell anywhere?”
“No.” Marigold shook her head. She felt there was no need to make a fuss when her injury was so minor.
Upon hearing that, Gilbert didn’t ask anymore. He asked the maid to have breakfast served. “Let’s have breakfast.”
“Alright.’ It was after Marigold sat down that she realized the breakfast that day was a little different from what they usually had. It was practically foods that were rich in iron. She was a little helpless. She looked up at Gilbert and said, “There’s no need to go over the top when it’s only a minor injury.”
“So what if it’s a minor injury? You were bleeding.” In his opinion, since she did lose some blood, she needed more iron to replenish. Besides, it was because Marigold tried to save him that she got injured.
Marigold couldn’t find a way to refute his argument. “Oh, alright.” She didn’t say anything else, just buried herself in her breakfast.
Seeing that she was eating breakfast so obediently, Gilbert felt the itch to ask, “Why did you jump in front of a bullet for me yesterday? Are you really not afraid of death?”
He had already asked this question yesterday. However, he still could not help but ask her again.
“I was afraid. Everybody is afraid of death.” She wasn’t that mighty, so of course, she was also afraid of death. “I didn’t think too much about it at that time.”
She was afraid to die, but she didn’t want to see anything happen to Gilbert. Therefore, she reacted instinctively at that time.
Gilbert was touched as he looked at her. No matter how slow he was to warm up to a person, he could tell that he was a little in love with Marigold at that moment.
He had never expected that he would actually fall in love with a person he once hated so much. It was really too strange. Could it be that he was the kind who would develop feelings for a person over time?
There was a moment of silence before the man said slowly, “Don’t be so silly next time. Think of Caleb. What would he do if something happened to you?”
