CH 59
All the parents recognized Pam knew that she was a member of the powerful Barnard family and didn’t dare to provoke her. Seeing that the surrounding people did not dare to offend her, Pam became even more arrogant, looking at Natalie and Liam and saying,
“As the parents are, so the children follow.”
Natalie glared angrily at Pam. She couldn’t bear this taunting and struck back,
“It’s been a long time since we last met, but you’re still as mean as ever. As a mother yourself, you might at least show some consideration towards the feelings of a child.”
Pam was angered by this. She pointed at Natalie and snapped,
“Sure, Natalie, you have guts—you dare to scold me. I can do what I want and get whatever I want. For example, I’ll definitely get the principal to expel your child today. If the principal refuses to play ball, I’ll threaten to withdraw my own child from the school. Having the Barnards reject the school won’t do its reputation any good.”
With that, Pam looked at Natalie complacently, awaiting her response.
When the people around them heard Pam’s words, a few of them even agreed with her.
“She’s right, we can’t let this kind of tainted person affect our children. I also think it’s better if he’s expelled.”
The scene suddenly became very chaotic. The whispers and contemptuous gazes from the surrounding people made Liam panic. Looking at his mother, he weakly called out,
“Mommy.”
Natalie touched Liam’s head to comfort him, then a cold light came into her eyes as she looked around the crowd. She said,
“Let’s see whether they dare expel Liam.”
The principal, Mister Mackenzie, having heard the commotion, had come outside to investigate the situation. As he approached, Pam pointed at Natalie and said,
“This woman’s private life is shady, and her character is corrupt. Consequently, her children must also be considered to have dubious characteristics. I can’t let my child associate with someone like that every day. What do you propose to do about it, Mister Mackenzie?”
Natalie didn’t show any expression on her face as she listened to Pam’s words. She just looked at the principal, waiting for his decision.
Mackenzie frowned, feeling torn. He knew that Pam was arrogant and used to getting her way. But irrespective of whatever Natalie had done, the child was innocent. Thinking about this, the principal’s expression turned cold. He said,
“The boy has entered the academy in accordance with normal procedures. He cannot be expelled for no reason.”
Pam was unwilling to let this go so easily. She said,
“Coolie, Mr. Mackenzie, my family, the Barnards, are a family of some renowned, as I’m sure you’re aware. Are you sure you can cope with the consequences of offending us?”
Pam looked at the principal, anticipating he would give in immediately. Cheryl looked at Natalie and smiled maliciously.
But Mackenzie was not so easy to intimidate. He narrowed his eyes and said,
“The boy definitely cannot be expelled. If you insist, Ms. Barnard, then I suggest you withdraw your own child from the school instead.”
Pam and Cheryl were stunned. Pam said,
“Isolate? Mister Mackenzie, you will regret this. Please reconsider.”
The principal remained unmoved, saying coldly,
“The boy cannot be expelled. You must decide.”
With that, the principal walked away and back into the school building.
Natalie smiled with satisfaction, then looked at Pam with disdain. Pam’s face was twisted with rage. She looked at Natalie in bewilderment, unable to figure out why the principal would favor Natalie even at the cost of offending the Barnards. Cheryl couldn’t stand to see Natalie’s victory, saying sourly,
“Natalie, you must have a special relationship with the principal to get him to take your side, huh? Maybe you and here, well, you know.”
Cheryl left the full implications unsaid, but she looked at Natalie meaningfully, arching an eyebrow. When the surrounding people heard what Cheryl said, they looked at Natalie even more disdainfully than before. No one there knew that Natalie was related to the renowned Claire family. The only explanation for the principal favoring her that they could think of was the seedy one that Cheryl was implying. Natalie laughed coldly in response to the surrounding whispers. This little sister of hers really did seek to discredit her whenever she could. That being the case, Natalie felt no need to be polite.
Natalie said mockingly,
“Cheryl, who I am friends with is none of your business. And unlike you, at least, I have never stolen my sister’s fiance.”
