“That’s ridiculous. You’re no longer allowed to stay up late playing on your phone.” Gilbert glared in annoyance. “You heard me?”
“Alright. I got it.” Marigold nodded. She thought that he had already started reprimanding her before they got together. It would be worse if they were together, wouldn’t it?
However, why did she still feel a little happy about it?
Both of them sat down to have breakfast together. Gilbert would have to leave the villa after breakfast. “Are you going to Bradshaw Operations today?” Marigold asked.
“Mmhmm.” Gilbert nodded.
“The people there would not make things difficult for you, would they?” After all, Gilbert joined the company out of nowhere, so she was a little worried.
Gilbert sneered when he heard that and said without a care, “Don’t worry. I can handle it.”
He had the details of all the members of the Bradshaw family. He knew everybody’s character and dirty secrets very well. It was not an exaggeration to say that nobody from the Bradshaw family would dare to offend him.
Of course, Gilbert would keep a low profile. He had to take his time. In any case, he wasn’t in a hurry.
Seeing that he looked so confident. Marigold didn’t ask anything else anymore. ‘Just be careful.”
After breakfast, Gilbert left the villa and went straight to Bradshaw Operations.
Everybody from Bradshaw Operations already knew that Esther’s long-lost son would join the company that day. He would not hold any posts for the time being, but everybody knew very well that it was only a matter of time.
Therefore, quite a number of people were looking forward to meeting him in the early morning. He might be the future president of the company, so they had to get on his good books.
At 9.15 am, Gilbert arrived at the entrance of the company on time.
Esther’s assistant had been waiting for him at the entrance for a long time. When he saw him coming, he immediately went up to greet him. “Mr.
Hawthorn, Miss Bradshaw is already waiting for you in her office.”
“Mmhmm,” Gilbert responded, then entered the elevator with the assistant.
After the two of them left, the crowd started to talk about him.
“Wow! He is too handsome! I’m willing to die if I could be with him!” A girl could not help but exclaim. She thought he would look like Eli. After all, they were brothers. However, it looked like Gilbert was far more handsome.
Another person rolled her eyes at her and said, “Dream on!”
They were just ordinary workers. A talented person like Gilbert, even if he had only been found by the Bradshaw family recently, was destined to be out of their league in this life.
Gilbert followed the assistant to Esther’s office. She was quite pleased to see him arriving on time. He was already better than Eli, who had never been to work on time.
“You came at a perfect time. I’m meeting a client in the morning. You’ll be my assistant for the day,” Esther informed him. Then, she immediately got up and left without giving Gilbert a chance to ask any questions.
Gilbert didn’t mind. However, before he left, he still asked the assistant next to him for the client’s information. Whether Esther was deliberately assessing him or not, he had to do a perfect job and not give her any chance to find fault with him.
Gilbert followed behind Esther and worked as her assistant for the entire day.
Esther knew Gilbert was very capable, but after she witnessed him working, she learned some people were just born to be capable. It had nothing to do with external factors like training at all.
“It would be great if Gilbert could sincerely come back to the Bradshaw family,” she lamented internally.
Gilbert and Marigold (56)
The Bradshaws quickly recognized Gilbert’s abilities. Esther was planning on observing him a little more, but it seemed redundant now. She got Gilbert into her office and said, “Everyone in this company has acknowledged your skills. Hence, I shall try and let you be in charge of this project.”
Gilbert was expressionless and didn’t react much. It was as if everything was within his expectations.
“However, if you want to take over the Bradshaws, your wife cannot be a nobody. She has to match your status, at least.” Esther looked at him. As expected, his face turned sour at the mention of it. She wasn’t surprised and went on, “You needn’t answer me at once. You can think about it on your own. But I hope that you will make the right decision.”
In the end, if Gilbert didn’t shake Marigold off, Esther would not entrust the Bradshaws to him. If he didn’t get rid of her, that would mean he wasn’t standing on the Bradshaws’ side. Even if he was capable, she would not dare to trust him.
Gilbert walked out of Esther’s office. He had to act fast against the Bradshaws. He would never part with Marigold despite them having never been together.
He left the company and went back to his villa.
Once out of the car, his face turned grim. Right before he came into the villa, he saw a few unfamiliar faces. They were definitely not his neighbors. They looked shifty and suspicious. He could tell at a glance that they were plotting something.
Gilbert had been in Bradshaw Operations recently. Hence, they were not here for him. They probably came for Marigold, but she couldn’t have wronged anyone recently. If that was the case, that meant that it was Gilbert who was causing her this trouble.
He called for someone to dispose of these people and to research the mastermind behind them.
It was as he expected. It was the Bradshaws.
Gilbert felt frustrated. He regretted agreeing to return to the Bradshaws. Based on the current situation, the Bradshaws would make a move if he didn’t split up with Marigold. His plan to go against the Bradshaws had yet to take form, and after learning about them these few days, he knew clearly of the Bradshaws’ properties.
It was indeed as Esther had said. They were comparable to the Zellwegers. If Gilbert still went against them doggedly, he would be defeated. But if this went on, the Bradshaws would definitely send someone over to get rid of Marigold.
He could chase them off now, but what if there was a next time? Gilbert began to feel afraid.
“Back already?” Marigold came downstairs when she heard his car driving in. “What’s wrong? You look upset.”
He didn’t just look upset. He looked extremely troubled.
When he saw her, Gilbert softened his expression. “I’m fine.” Then, he went upstairs and into his bedroom.
Marigold was confused. Fine? He obviously wasn’t. In fact, it looked serious, but she couldn’t be of any help.
She couldn’t help feeling exasperated.
In his room, Gilbert held his phone in his hands. He’d just texted Esther, agreeing to split up with Marigold and meet up with the woman they had prepared for him. He thought that as long as he was fast enough, he might be able to team up with Eustace to destroy the Bradshaws when Esther’s guard was down.
He’d only dared to agree to her request because of that thought.
Gilbert and Marigold (57)
There was a knock at his door, and Gilbert quickly turned his phone off.
Marigold pushed the door open. She felt concerned for him when she saw him at his desk. “Are you still busy? Are the Bradshaws purposely giving you all this work to upset you?”
These days, Gilbert left home early and came back late. He was busier than he had been in his own company.
‘ No. I’m fine.” Gilbert was not fine, but he couldn’t tell her that. She would only worry.
Right this moment, a text arrived on his phone. He glanced at it, and anger began ripping through his chest.
It was from Esther. She said that since Gilbert had made his decision, he would have to make Marigold move out of his villa.
Gilbert was furious. He thought that Esther had no business interfering with his matters. However, he suppressed his emotions. He had to take down the Bradshaws. Otherwise, he and Marigold would not live in peace. Since he had a decision made, he had a plan. But Marigold would have to suffer for a while.
There was a moment’s silence. Although Gilbert said nothing, Marigold could sense his emotional turmoil. “Did something happen?” she asked.
Gilbert looked up at her. They held their gazes just like that, and after God knew how long, he said, “It’s nothing much. It’s just that Danika told me this afternoon that she wants you to take the child and accompany her for a few days. She wants to experience caring for a child for a while.’
“What? Is she preparing to have a child with Eustace?” Marigold asked.
“Perhaps. Maybe she’s not sure if she likes children, so she wants you to take Cal over/ Gilbert said calmly. He didn’t look as if he were lying at all.
Marigold’s relationship with Danika was pretty alright. She had no reason to refuse. Thus, she agreed. “Okay.” But after that, she felt upset. “Well…! would have to leave this place for now.”
“It’s fine. You can come back after that.” Gilbert smiled, feeling an ache in his heart. If he were just stronger and had the ability to defeat the Bradshaws, he wouldn’t have had to resort to this.
“That’s true. It’s not a long distance away, after all. You can come see us if you miss Cal.” She didn’t know how long Danika would want her to stay. A few days would suffice, wouldn’t it?
Gilbert was relieved to see that Marigold trusted him. But at the same time, he felt pained.
Marigold would be so sad to know that he was lying to her. But he had no other choice. If he didn’t send her away, Esther wouldn’t believe him, and the Bradshaws would place all their attention on Marigold. There would be no telling when they would attack her.
Gilbert truly didn’t want anything to happen to her, so he had to send her to Danika’s place. It would be safer that way. He didn’t feel so upset once his decision was made.
Everything was for a better future ahead.
“Are you hungry?” Gilbert asked her.
“I’m alright. Are you?” She hadn’t brought him food these past two days. Gilbert hadn’t let her, saying he didn’t want her to be tired. Thus, the servants were the ones who brought food to him.
Normally, if he’d had dinner, he wouldn’t eat anything else at home.
Gilbert stood up and patted her on the head. “I’m a little hungry. Can you eat with me?”
Marigold blushed, answering softly, “Sure.”
Gilbert and Marigold (58)
Marigold moved to Danika’s house the next day.
Danika and Eustace’s married home was a villa that was not too big. Eustace said it felt more like home, and Danika didn’t have an opinion about it. The only space they’d need was really just the bed, regardless of the size of the house.
However, because the villa was not that large, it wasn’t ideal for Marigold, her child, and the nanny to live in. There was a man in the house, after all.
With no other choice, Danika had to get Eustace to sleep in another house.
Eustace was grumpy about it. He only relented after Danika promised to have a child with him once this Gilbert and Marigold ordeal was over.
That was right. After seeing Gilbert’s child, Eustace felt for the first time that children weren’t that bad after all. In fact, they might even look really cute. Though, of course, it would have to be his and Danika’s child.
‘I’m sorry for bothering you, Danika.” Marigold was embarrassed when she knew that Eustace had to move out.
