“Thank you for your hard work,” said Eustace, approaching Danika warily.
Although she seemed to have the occasional attitude problem, Eustace decided to let it slide for Faye’s sake. Meanwhile, already exhausted from the operation, the sight of Eustace left a bitter taste in Danika’s mouth.
“My work isn’t hard. My life is hard.”
Why did her patient have to be Eustace’s lover? It made her life so difficult.
“You all must be hungry. I have ordered some food for you. Please head to the office to eat,” Eustace announced.
“You’re being too nice, Mr. Quincey. It is our responsibility to perform this surgery,” one of the doctors responded, sounding rather flattered.
“Yes,” agreed another doctor, “it’s our pleasure to assist you, Mr. Quincey.”
This was Eustace they were talking about. It was a rare opportunity to see him, much less to be directly involved in helping him. However, Danika did not agree with the rest of them.
Listening to them compliment Eustace, she was dumbfounded. Was it really their pleasure to assist him? Well, someone could take that pleasure away from her because she didn’t want it, she thought to herself.
Vincent led everyone to the office for their meal while Faye was wheeled to the intensive care unit. It had been a long time since she had such a long operation, so she was drained. Rubbing her temples, Danika got ready to head home to rest.
“Aren’t you going to eat?”
Seeing that she was about to leave, Eustace reached for her hand instinctively, which he discovered was soft to the touch. Perhaps because she had just washed her hands, they were ice-cold.
For some reason, it stirred something within him. However, before he could process it, Danika jumped away from him and stared at him warily.
“Watch yourself, Mr. Quincey.”
Then, she wiped her hands, distaste written all over her face.
Eustace was exasperated. What did he do to deserve such an extreme reaction?
Something within him snapped, and he glared at her.
“Dr. Zellweger!” he spat furiously through gritted teeth. The low timbre of his voice was bone-chilling.
Danika raised her head to meet his gaze, unwavering as she stared back at him with her eyes blazing.
“Don’t think you can be rude just because you’ve operated on Faye. I’m telling you, you’re testing my patience.”
Was she testing his patience? What a joke! He was the one who was trying her patience.
“Really?” she asked. Suppressing her anger, she forced herself to smile as wide as possible. “Since that’s the case, let this be the last time we meet.”
“You—”
Before he could finish his sentence, Danika had turned around and left, leaving Eustace staring at her retreating figure. No matter how long he waited, he couldn’t shake off his exasperation.
“All necessary arrangements have been made for Miss Lawrence, Mr. Quincey,” informed Vincent cautiously as he approached Eustace from behind.
The truth was Vincent had completed the procedures a long time ago. However, from a distance away, he could sense the tension between Eustace and Danika, so he wisely stayed away.
“Do you think she hates me?” Eustace asked suddenly as he continued looking in the direction Danika had gone.
Vincent was stunned by his question. After a moment of thought, he answered, “I think that isn’t the case…maybe Dr. Zellweger just doesn’t want to see you—”
Before he could finish his sentence, he felt a cold wave sweep across his body and instinctively shivered. When he raised his head, he saw Eustace staring at him gloomily. Startled, he realized he had said something wrong.
“There’s no way she hates you!” he corrected himself immediately. “Given your many charms, it is impossible for any woman to hate you, so she must be playing hard to get.”
He wasn’t exactly lying. After all, Eustace was the dream boyfriend of Parrington women, and Danika was the first who treated him like this. That was why he concluded that Danika was trying to attract his attention in such a manner.
But was she really playing hard to get?
…
A week later, Faye was transferred from the intensive care unit to a general ward. When Danika and her team went making their rounds, they found her using her phone as she lay on the bed, appearing to be in a much better condition than before.
“How do you feel today? Any discomfort?” Danika inquired, following protocol.
At the sight of Danika, Faye smiled and shook her head.
“No, I feel pretty good.”
Danika nodded, not surprised by her answer.
“That’s good. After staying a little longer here, you can be discharged to recuperate at home.”
When she was about to leave, Faye called out to her, “Dr. Zellweger, do you have some time?”
Frowning, Danika asked, “What is it?”
“Nothing, I just want to talk to you,” she said in a small voice, which made her seem rather pitiful. However, Danika didn’t feel sorry for her, because Faye was no different from her other patients.
“Sorry, I’m busy,” she said, declining her request.
“Just for a short while,” Faye pleaded hopefully.
Before Danika could refuse, a doctor accompanying her on her rounds suggested, “Dr. Zellweger, why don’t you chat with Miss Lawrence while the rest of us continue making our rounds?”
Faye was affiliated with Eustace. Studying Faye carefully, her intuition told her Faye harbored ill intentions toward her. Afraid that Danika didn’t know how powerful Eustace was, the doctor asked her to stay. With that, the group left, leaving Danika behind in the ward.
She walked over and sat on the chair beside the bed, asking, “What would you like to talk about?”
“Oh, nothing much. I just wanted to thank you. After all, if not for you, I don’t think I would have survived,” answered Faye with an innocent smile.
On the other hand, Danika remained expressionless and unmoved by her gratitude. “You don’t have to thank me. I was paid to perform your surgery, and Mr. Quincey paid for your medical expenses.”
Eustace paid quite a lot for her surgery.
“I know that Eustace has paid a high price for my surgery, but still, you’re the one who saved me,” she said, sounding so sincere that Danika almost thought she had assumed the worst of Faye. However, Faye soon confirmed that her intuition was correct.
“Dr. Zellweger, do you have a boyfriend? I noticed that you’re still quite young,” she asked.
Danika shook her head silently, wanting to see what Faye was up to.
“What is your type? I know many handsome, talented men; I could introduce you to them.”
