Passing through the winding corridors, Gong Ziyu hurriedly walked towards Gong Huanyu’s room.
Gong Huanyu was standing in front of a desk, tall and elegant, with a scholarly demeanor. As the young lord of the Gong family, he had experienced many years of training, and seriousness could be seen between his brows. There was an unfolded map on the table, with chess-like markers scattered throughout. He was contemplating the security affairs of the valley.
Suddenly, there was a commotion outside the hall, Gong Huanyu raised his head to see what was happening.
The guard outside the door blocked Gong Ziyu, saying, “Young master, the young lord is currently–“
However, Gong Ziyu completely ignored him and barged into the main hall of the Feather Palace.
Gong Ziyu shouted, “Brother! Brother!”
The Feather Palace was solemn and quiet. Suddenly, Gong Ziyu sensed something amiss and immediately stopped in his tracks. His words were stuck on his lips as he heard a loud reprimand.
“You’re becoming more and more unruly!” The tone was low and authoritative.
As Gong Ziyu approached, he finally saw the situation in the room—his father was also there.
Gong Hongyu, the current Lord of the Gong Family, had a broad face and a dignified appearance. He stood with his hands behind his back, his robe flowing, and his posture tall and straight like a towering pine tree. With sword-like eyebrows and sharp eagle-like eyes, he stared fiercely at Gong Ziyu.
Under his father’s glare, Gong Ziyu lost all traces of impatience and could only lower his body and say, “Father… Brother…”
Gong Hongyu, forceful and always strict with him, coldly said, “Address me Lord and address him young lord.”
Hearing this, Gong Ziyu’s expression turned unpleasant. He gritted his teeth, as if protesting and rebelling through silence.
Gong Huanyu noticed the tension between the two and had to change the topic in a gentle voice.
“Ziyu, what’s wrong? Why did you come to find me?”
Gong Ziyu raised his head and glanced at his father’s stern face, hesitating whether to speak or not. In the midst of hesitation, he heard Gong Huanyu nervously ask, “Are you injured?”
Gong Ziyu was puzzled, “Huh?”
“There’s blood on your sleeve.”
Only then did Gong Ziyu realize that he had blood from the injured owner of the medicine shop on his hands. After thinking for a moment, he finally spoke, “On my way back, I saved a heavily wounded scout from an outpost. He told me that…”
“What did he say?” Gong Hongyu sensed something unusual.
Gong Ziyu didn’t hide anything, “He said there’s an undercover Wufeng assassin among the brides who entered the canyon…”
Gong Huanyu’s brows furrowed suddenly. He exchanged a glance with Gong Hongyu and asked, “Ziyu, do you understand the weight of this statement…”
“I do, that’s why I came to find my brother… to find the young lord…”
Gong Hongyu remained silent while Gong Huanyu took charge, “Did you ask him who injured him? What is their purpose? Where did the information about the assassin among the brides come from?”
A series of questions bombarded Gong Ziyu, leaving him stunned. “I haven’t had a chance to ask him…”
Gong Hongyu remained calm, “Where is the heavily wounded person now?”
The Palace Gate Medical Hall faced a shallow blue pond. As one crossed the wooden bridge, the scent of herbs soaked year-round could be smelled. Almost every entrance and corridor had medicine cabinets and drawers, filled with numerous rare herbs and precious medicinal ingredients. If one had a keen sense of smell, they could even detect a faint hint of blood in the air. Gong Ziyu led his father and brother into the medical hall’s ward at a brisk pace.
The owner of the medicine shop lay on the sickbed, already pale as paper, with blackened lips.
Jin Fan, who stood by the side, bowed upon seeing the Blade Bearer and the young lord before speaking softly, “Reporting to Lord, he… has already passed away…”
Shortly after being brought to the medical hall, the owner of the medicine shop succumbed to his severe injuries and died.
Gong Huanyu’s brows twitched slightly. Carefully using forensic tools, he gently lifted the clothes on the body, revealing a thin wound on the chest. Around the wound, there was an obvious trace of poisoning, appearing purplish-black.
Gong Ziyu’s heart sank.
Gong Huanyu looked up at his father, his expression filled with doubt, “The blade is so thin…”
Gong Hongyu remained silent, seemingly contemplating.
Gong Huanyu took a deep breath and made up his mind, “We must find the Wufeng assassin hidden among the brides.”
Gong Ziyu hesitated, “Brother, with so many brides, do you have any leads? Otherwise, how can we find them?”
“No need to search.” Gong Hongyu coldly interrupted Gong Ziyu.
Both Gong Huanyu and Gong Ziyu were surprised, looking up at their father simultaneously.
“No need to take risks, just kill them all.”
Gong Hongyu’s eyes were as deep as a hawk’s.
After hearing that, Gong Ziyu’s face changed drastically. As expected, his father adhered to the principle of “better to kill by mistake than let go,” but Gong Ziyu didn’t agree. Gong Hongyu had already turned and walked out of the infirmary, so Gong Ziyu had no choice but to quickly follow behind his father.
“Father! Father!”
Gong Hongyu ignored him completely.
Gong Ziyu was anxious and questioned, “You want to kill all the brides for the sake of one assassin? That’s indiscriminate killing. How are we any different from Wufeng?”
Gong Hongyu didn’t stop or turn around.
“This assassin infiltrated here to kill members of the Gong family. Do you really think the killer is ‘innocent’?”
“What about the other brides? Not all of them are assassins!”
“I’ve faced countless dangers in my life, but I never risked the lives of my family. Even if there’s a one-in-a-million chance, it’s absolutely unacceptable.”
Gong Hongyu’s words brooked no argument, leaving Gong Ziyu at a loss for words.
“Then… then let’s just keep them locked up and find the assassin. Killing all the brides once they enter the palace, how will the people in the martial world view our Gong family?”
Although Gong Hongyu stopped walking, his heart remained firm as a rock. “The martial world has long lost its sense of right and wrong under the threat of Wufeng. The fact that the Gong family hasn’t submitted to Wufeng and can still live peacefully in the valley is precisely because we have always been cautious and careful.”
After saying that, Gong Hongyu walked away without looking back, leaving Gong Ziyu standing there alone.
Gong Huanyu walked over from behind and patted his desolate shoulder, whispering, “You go back first, I’ll come find you later.”
Watching his father and brother walk away, Gong Ziyu pondered deeply, then turned to Jin Fan, who had been silent all along.
“Jin Fan, come with me.”
